Full drivers license for Turks
« on: August 04, 2008, 06:39:37 AM »
On the subject of driving in Turkey, does anyone know what  standards are needed for a Turkish person to obtain a driving a driving license. I heard that all they have to do is be able to start the car, drive forwards in 1st and 2nd gears about 75 yards and stop. They also have to read a book about driving and answer some multiple choice questions and then they are given a full license.  They are not taught about indicators, handbrake, headlights or 3rd, 4th and reverse gears. is it really that easy to be legal on the road in Turkey?

I have heard reports that the tests are completely worthless. I was told of a person who sat in the drivers seat along side the instructor, adjusted the drivers seat and side mirrorsand put the seat belt on. Upon seeing all this the instructor said that it was obvious they new what they were doing and test was passed without even turning the engine over.

I have to stress that this is what I was told by someone who was a friend of a friend, so take it as you like. With the standard of driving I have personally seen it does not suprise me.

Was not suggesting they were given away. I am sure the driving tests are difficult. However from my short time in Turkey I have seen how with the right kind of consideration, rules can be interpreted in a differant light!

In fact, in the UK, they don''t ask for for any SATs levels, or GCSE or ''A'' level certificates like they do in Turkey. Nor do they ask for a physical or police check.

I know that my Turkish friend in Kalkan went to a driving school in Fethiye for really formal training. He spent 4 hrs a week  for  10 weeks at very cosiderable cost . It was divided between Classroom Theory, Basic car maintenance and practical driving. I saw his books and paperwork, far ahead of any UK test.    he pass mark for a licence is also high at 80%. There is a similar separate test for motorbikes.
I fear we are back to the old "Turkish system".  Some do the job properly and suffer because of the remainder who take an easier way.
