Turkish Lira rate
« on: August 02, 2008, 03:39:21 PM »
Whats happening to the Turkish Lira I,ve noticed that it seems you are getting less to the pound at the moment and it keeps falling further, am gutted we are due out next week and i was hoping for a good rate.

Has this anything to do with other events at the moment do you think ?

Hope i don''t have to cut back on the handbags and drinks etc.

Article in the newspaper today states beer has gone from 67P up to 79p from last year, 5 mile taxi ride £5.40 last year to £5.99 bet that''s not right in Kalkan.

Well i hope the sun is shining can''t take that away  ;)

Unfortunately Jacquiviva, it''s the pound that is dropping against the Lira that results in so few to the pound. But it''s not only the Lira that''s affected, have a look to see how many Euros you get - around 1.2 to the pound compared to 1.4 not so long ago.
You will probably get a slightly better rate exchanging in Kalkan than at home.

whatever you do dont use the airport money-changers.  I got 2 to the pound last time in June!  It was around 2.4 ish in Kalkan post office.   Bill

Pound down to 2.19ytl this week, very bad for the pound. This is not to do with the A.K party now surely.
Makes things here that little bit more expensive for us

Petrol down to £1.09 this week @ my local supermarket.

The £/YTL rate is more to do with the ''global'' credit crisis.....  & the dollar is currently rising (hence the weakening £)

LSE today up ''cos commodities, particularly gold are dropping (yaeeee)

Not that I pretend to understand the madness that has such an impact on our lives & the price of Effes
check out www.ft.com it has a fab currency converter.

Don''t change your money in any of the travel agents in the UK either, I made the mistake of doing that at the beginning of this year when I went to Istanbul for a weekend and got totally ripped off, I never do this normally, I always changed it at the resort & I will never do it again!

Can anyone tell me what the rate is for exchanging in Kalkan at the moment and do you pay commission? where''s the best place to exchange?

2.077 at my branch of Lloyds and not much better at M&S (usually a better rate)

Normally I change everything up before I come out as I can''t be doing with faffing about having to find an exchange but if the rate is this poor I want to wring every last ytl out of my £s.

thanks
Liz

The rate on the board outside the shop in Kalkan today was 2.15ytl.
No commission on that.

With Sterling forecast to drop in value by further 10% against the Dollar I would not be surprised to see the rate drop below 2YTL to the £ over the next month or two.  The Turkish Central Bank is unlikely to reduce interest rates which makes the Lira attractive to investors and therefore it continues to be over valued.

In light of the above we have decided to forego our usual one week holiday to Kalkan in October as this additional expense coupled with increasing prices in restaurants, fuel, air fares etc. just doesn''t make it an attractive proposition.

we have just returned from a fantastic holiday in Kalkan. however shocked at how expensive it was. with two children in tow money just seem to disappear. even modest evening meals were expensive on the whole (though some fantastic food. add on costs for sun beds beach clubs etc we spent double what we spent in Turkey on our last visit (admittedly a few years ago)

I can appreciate with less than 2.2ytl to the pound and the increase in prices in Turkey of late, that things might seem more expensive here than they used to be, but haven''t prices also risen in the U.K?
