Laptop internet via a mobile
« on: June 01, 2008, 10:50:34 AM »
I''m a bit of a technophobic  ::) but understand that there is something that I could plug into my laptop, via my mobile to get internet access.  I''m with orange business and to get one here that I could use in Kalkan is £45 a month on contract, which is way too much, but could I buy a turkish mobile and the plug in thingy on a pay as you go basis in Kalkan???

It sems quite complicated and expensive to get a phoneline and broadband installed when we will only be using it for approximately 6-8 weeks a year.

Any advice or info would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Kay

Why not just take your laptop down to the internet cafes in town and use it their either wirelessly or plug it in using their leads - that is what I did before we installed telephone line and broadband.... -that way is cheap as chips (well not as cheap as the chips were a few years ago - but still cheap!!)  ;D ;D

I would not under any circumstances use your Sim card for internet access....you will lose your shirt when the bill comes in and its also very slow and forget any attachments.

I would advise taking your laptop to any of the internet cafe''s.......

Kay, GBP45 a month sounds a bit steep!

I use my mobile from time to time as a GPRS modem with my laptop, and am quite happy with speed and charges. I tend to sniff for any unprotected wifi access points first, but when that fails, I have found GPRS to be an acceptable alternative.

Obviously best to avoid ''busy'' webpages, and not surf for hours at a time, but if you restrict usage to web-based email and/or company vpn access, it shouldn''t work out too expensive. That said, check out carefully your service provider''s GPRS tariffs, and also see who they have as their ''preferred partner'' in the country you will be visiting - Turkey, I guess in this case - and that there are no nasty suprises on their tariffs either.

It''s definitely do-able.
