Snorkelling
« on: March 04, 2008, 09:54:37 PM »
Hello,
I feel a little silly asking this one, but here goes....  My husband and son love to snorkel but I have read the water can get a little chilly.  We will be in Kalkan in Aug so will they require wet suits for prolonged stays in the water (try not to laugh too much all you regulars to Kalkan).
Also, we are staying in the Emir apartments and I have decided to have a Turkish bath at the Asifya? Is it far from where we are staying?  Thank you.

They will be fine without wet suits however watch those backs and shoulders, very easy to burn even when underwater, my son spent last holidays with his head underwater, but after getting sore a few times ended up swimming in tee shirt. Asfiya turkish bath is very good.

You won''t need a wet suit.  Water will be 24-25C +++ !

Annie - really NO need for wetsuits in August...you will want to stay all day in the water just to keep cool...!!  ;)  Emir apartments are about a 5-10 minute walk to the Asfiya - so no problem to get there on foot and the turkish hammam in the Asfiya is great!

Cheers!

Hi Annie
I have one of the Emir Apartments (one of the three by the poolside) - which apartment are you staying in?  Re: the Asfiya, it is only a 5 min walk but the on site staff at the Emir will usually arrange with the Asfiya for someone to come and collect you in a car and bring you back to the Emir. Even though it''s not far at all, August is very warm and I''m sure you''d appreciate the transfer. It''s great service and a lovely turkish bath there...and the sea will be lovely then too. Have a great time.

Hiya Annie...
I would advise wearing a t-shirt and possibly shorts when snorkelling, due to the exposure to the hot sun, and snorkellers not noticing the burns till its too late.
I wear an SPF50 tshirt designed for use in the sea all the time anyway (due to burning easily) but it once came untucked whilst snorkelling and i ended up with an impressive red stripe accross my lower back.
What wasnt so impressive was the pain!
The same can happen to the top of the legs too.
And dont forget the back of the neck, plenty of sunscreen thats specially for use in the sea.
The snorkelling is well worth the hassle of all this protection, though!
We took a £5 disposable waterproof camera with us last year and got some lovely shots.  :)

I can''t remember whether there has been another topic about this before (know I should  ::) ) but can anyone advise where the best places are to snorkle around the bay? I wouldn''t mind giving it a go this year.

My thanks to all (yet again) where would I be without you!
I sort of knew the answer but just wanted to check.  Also, does anyone happen to know how to contact the Asifa(sp?) as I want to pre-book a turkish bath.
Many thanks again. Annie
