Just used a bog standard credit card and got 2.69 to 2.71. You can get 2.73 exchanging sterling at various shops. Don't think you'll do much better.

KTLN generally has a pretty up-to-date exchange rate listed.

It's updated daily.
Please use "Click to Say Thanks' if you enjoy this Post.  ::)

Hi BarbH,

It is going to be 3TL to £ 1 by the end of this week...............I wish, although it is around 2.85 TL at the moment which is still very good. This rate available from the banks. You can get the exchange in the banks...........but have your passport with you as they wont change money without it.
The rate in town is usually .05 below the banks rate and you dont need your passport of course.

Thanks, noticed that Sainsburys was offering nearly 2.75 which seemed good. We are out in just under 3 weeks and wondering when to buy our normal £100 worth to start us off. We then get the rest out there.

Hi BarbH,

I really would not get £ 100 worth. You will always get a much better rate in Kalkan.Even in Kalkan the rate will be better than the uk.If you go to the banks it will be much better than the uk.Remember to take your passport into the banks and remember that the banks are not open at weekends.

If you are getting 2.75 ish at Sainsbury's it is because you are getting 2.85 ish in Kalkan.Yesterday,i changed £ 20 in M & S at 2.7456 approx, which gave me 55 tl.We arrive late on sunday 23rd June, and the above monies will buy some provisions from Yali supermarket to tide us over until Monday morning and we will change up more then.

Even if you arrive on a Saturday and the banks are closed, you will still do better in town than the uk

I always get cash from the ATM just outside the arrivals exit at Dalaman and before you cross the bridge to where the taxi drivers/transfers are waiting. Easy peasy

I presume you have a bank account,in turkey or do you just get the money exchanged to Lira from your bank acount in Uk,in which case this is an expensive way of doing it but everyone to their own.

Neither I use a Halifax Clarity Card and the rate is exceedingly low best one on the market check out moneysaving expert.com, I think it cost me less than £2 for £500 drawn out, no atm fees etc but as you say each to their own.

Today from Ziraat bank in Kalkan you would have got over 2.88 tl to £ 1.No commision. At Dalaman with your Halifax clarity card, you wouldn't have got anywhere near that.Martin Lewis is  obviously not familuar with Kalkan banks.........I'm sure he would love Kalkan though. You do it your way.........as you say easy peasy !

Mayday 1 I thought all banks would give the same rate,  I'm not trying to be awkward or "do it my way" it was meant as friendly advice.

Hi ak1945, don't worry you are spot on. Not sure why Mayday1 has a bee in their bonnet but they should check facts before giving information, especially if they are gonna be rude while they give it. If you used the clarity card at the ATM you would have got a better rate than any bank can offer in exchange for sterling. Using the clarity card to pay for things or withdraw cash gives you the true/actual exchange rate, something no bank, or anywhere else for that matter can match. You do pay a small amount of interest on any cash withdrawn but its really tiny if you pay the card balance as soon as you get home. Much safer too.

AK1945 said themselves that they paid around £ 2 to withdraw £ 500.00.If you have to use a credit card then it is probably the best one to use.I dont buy the " safety element " to using the card, because its only safe as far as Dalaman airport !!! If you use the atm at the airport to change up money, after that, you are carrying cash...Turkish lira instead of stirling,so where is the safety element. You are just as likely to lose lira as you are stirling !!

So you may as well carry stirling with you all the way to Kalkan and get yourself a better rate..........Simples

Thanks Tuppy, as you say I pay off the card as soon as I get home and it's a tiny amount. No commission or ATM charges. I get some at the Airport as will be arriving late so don't have to worry about getting up to the bank in the morning can just relax, potter and have a lovely coffee at Merkez :)
BTW Mayday have we ever met?
