Cats....
« on: June 04, 2011, 05:05:05 PM »
Right then..The dog topic has been well discussed but what about the Cats?? I have been to Kalkan 8 times and everyone seems to own one, even my brother, and I've never worked out the reason... I have been to restaurants where Cats have been roaming around, (even roof top ones!!). Lot's of you who post on here have Cats as your Avatar.....Please tel me, what is it with b****y Cats as nobody seems to moan about them????  ??? ???

P.S I dont mind the Cats BTW!!!
;) : ::) :laugh:

Well, I don't like cats much either, but:

(1) they tend not to follow you along the street
(2) they tend not to jump up at you
(3) they tend not to try to nip/bite you for no reason
(4) I've never seen a cat chasing a car or motorbike
(4) they don't run around the streets barking and snarling all night (OK: the odd yowling session, but not very often)
(5) they don't gang up into packs

In short: you can generally ignore the cats, but it's impossible not to be aware of dogs in Kalkan.

LOL have you never heard the expression "dogs have masters, cats have slaves"  :) I love and have both cats and a dog who live in almost perfect harmony ::)
There's a picture of me in the gallery surrounded by around 12 of my favourite feline pals in Kalkan. I seem to attract them like a magnet.  hmmmm hope it's not the smell ??? ???

Mags, like your post. As I said, I don't mind cats in general at all. I think that they must be mandatory if you live in Kalkan and judging by the amount of Cat avatars, others have affection for them too  ;D ;)

Cats also provide an invaluable service in a place like Kalkan- pest control. Only yesterday our fat tom, who we have down as being pretty damn lazy, surprised us all by catching a snake. We wouldnt be without them for this reason, however we cant help but wonder when he/if will catch mummy and daddy!

According to the RSPB the average cat will kill each year, thirty birds, as well as large number of small mammals, snakes and amphibians.

Pet dogs which are allowed to roam in open countryside have a devastating effect on numbers of ground nesting birds which when disturbed during the nesting season abandon their nests.

By feeding and supporting Pet animals in advance of the native birds, small mammals and amphibians which populate the surrounding kalkan countryside.  We are actually contributing to their decline and possible extinction.

If we are to continue to see the huge and diverse number of species that thankfully Turkey unlike the UK still has and in coastal areas such as Kalkan with its unique micro climate which attracts insects and their natural predators in large numbers.  We must control the number of cats and dogs and stop them from having, as they are in ever increasing numbers, access to the surrounding countryside.

It is just not acceptable to walk dogs unless on a lead during the bird nesting season and to allow cats to roam freely killing birds and small mammals which in many cases are in severe decline in many parts of the Mediterranean.

This part of the Mediterranean was a very remote area until the rapid increase in tourism, which has only occurred over the last 20 years, due to its remoteness and the micro climate the sheer numbers and the diverse range of flora and fauna which is still to be seen is outstanding.

If we are to hand that legacy on to our grandchildren we need to maintain a larger percentage of green areas in Kalkan and restrict the number of cats and dogs with strong legislation to control their numbers.

I don’t expect anybody in KAPSA or Kalkan will listen but it has made me feel better getting my concerns off my chest.

Hi Buster

A point well made if impossible to enforce

Would you be open to the job of the Pied Piper of Kalkan to lure all these cats, dogs etc etc out of town ??

??? I know this site is open to varying views but Buster, what planet do you live on? I am sure you were trying to explain something but surely you are not trying to say cats & dogs are a new species & are affecting nature! Cats, for instance have been a important part of ALL CIVILISATIONS for at least 4,500 years! The Egyptians, because of there importance to their everyday life even started to worship them! Cats live the life of a nomad, they hunt & survive. Darwin contributes his theories to the 'art of survival' the strongest survive. Cats & other hunters kill the weakest so they to can survive. Flora & forna will also survive through the droppings of animals to & also the rotting carcasses of dead animals to regenerate the earth!Nectar hunting insects & mammals who forage, carry  & distribute pollen through brushing past plants!
If you do not like cats or dogs just say! But please do not try and say that cats & dogs have any significant affect on the environment as you get into your car to go to work  :-\
