Maybe the cumbersome bureaucratic money pit which is the public sector should be dismantled via privatisation.

I''ve always believed the local services should be run on a business level not profit making but cost aware..

It may have escaped your attention but, starting with Thatcher, successive governments have been privatising parts of the public sector. Gas, electric, water and the railways. Defence research has been done too and training is on the stocks now. But haven''t they all cost the customer more?
In my book privatisation is a joke, Just a means for fat cats to get fatter.
There - over there, there are.            To - Going to
Their - belongs to them.                     Too - In addition, Also
They're - Short for they are.

Pedant! me?

It''s times like this we need another Maggie...........she would have no time for highly paid "diversity co-ordinators and outreach workers" to pander to the feckless........

Went to see the musical ''Billy Elliot'' in London last weekend which was a briillliant reminder of the Thatcher years and the Miners'' strike, which forms the backcloth to my childhood memories;la show with plenty of pathos, realism and black humour. The billboard reconstructions, with lines of people queuing for the dole and the horrifying strapline ''LABOUR ISN''T WORKING'' struck a note with lots of the audience - how history seems to repeat itself- worringly.

Misty,

I don''t think there is a need to belittle the work Outreach Workers etc do. I know many people who work in these type of roles who do a fantastic job and work long hours for very little money. The people they support are not lazy and often have genuine illnesses such as depression and other mental health problems. Some people are not as fortunate as ourselves and need more support. I would hate to think if I or a member of my family was ever ill and needed help that these people would not be around. Diversity
Co-ordinators are also in place to help put a stop discrimination which is obviously still very much prevalent in the world.

Julie

I agree with you and thank goodness there are people willing to do this......my gripe is really with some of the non jobs that are continually featured in papers like the Guardian...spend some time reading these and you will soon see where you tax dollars go......Apologies if you thought I was generalising all workers in this sector.
