Where else to try before we go home?!
« on: May 23, 2012, 02:37:03 PM »
We have five dining nights left before we go home and we were wondering where else we should try before we leave.  Two of the nights are already taken as we go back to Tlos (in Patara) tomorrow night and have booked Trio for Saturday night.

We have dined in the following so far and I will do a report when I get home

Chillies
Zula
Begonvil Cafe
Cafe Ev
White Table
Tlos
Escudo
Mussakka
Adam's

Plus a few others for lunch etc.

We had always visited the more established restaurants on previous visits (two years ago) such as Doy Doy, Salt & Pepper, Kaptan's etc so wanted to mix it up a bit this year and also try a range of budgets.

Is there any other "must visit" restaurants before we go home.  As Trio is likely to be an expensive night we would prefer to try low to mid-priced.  We had thought of Sade and also Moonlight on Kalamar Rd.  Have also heard good reports about Rose.  So where would you all go?!

My favourite meal so far has definitely been Escudo and it is good to see them doing so well and the hard work in setting up is obvious.

How about Kalamaki - my fav rooftop restaurant or OUr House Cafe in Kalamar (on the REALLY steep hill) - well worth the effort if you are not staying in Kalamar or Yesil Ev on the way to Kalamar opposite Can Can's supermarket.  For really cheap good value food - try Hunkar Ocakbasi next to Corner Restaurant and opposite Kaya.....

Afiyet Olsun!

Hi,
Definitely Sade and the Rose is good but no view. Sorry, can't say that I will go back to Kalamaki as the service was awful on 2 occasions

Rose has excellent food and is very good value.

I would definitely recommend the Meze (I think it's a cut above Chillie's, which itself is very good). If you have a big appetite and want to try something a bit different you could perhaps follow the Meze with one of the Eastern Turkish dishes.

I would definitely say Sade is worth a visit, we went there on our first night and loved it.

Sade or Gourmet.  Went to Sade in April and loved it.  Haven't been to Gourmet this year as they only opened after we left but on our list for July.

Have to agree with Felicity and say Kalamaki, one of our favourites.

The Olive Garden,(above Merkez cafe) is our favourite, well worth a try. You will have to book for the tables with the best views.

Mid Price range try Sofra (amazing view), Olive Garden or Nar.
Low price range Fener Cafe (for dinner as opposed to lunch - its the same menu), Cafe Leon, Oz Adana (hopefully they'll have their licence sorted for alcohol now) and Odak near the taxi rank.
Two weeks tomorrow..... ;)
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Have you tried Ayse's Turkish Kitchen?   It is right by the bus station up the hill.   I have heard very good things about it and it sounds as if it is fairly modestly priced.   I don't know though if it is open in the evening - anyone know the answer to this?  Apparently a great place for lunch but I think you are really looking for evening meals.  Lots of people are saying it is very good, not expensive and views over the bay.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.   We ended up in Kosk tonight as it is somewhere I have always meant to try.

Will definitely try Sade and Kalamaki was one of our favourites from last time.

Has anyone eaten in Moonlight recently?

Thanks for the Escudo recommendation.  Four of us went there last night and all agreed that the food was amongst the best we have had in Kalkan.  The guys who run it came and chatted with us at the end of the evening to explain the concept behind the menu and the service throughout was attentive and fast without ever being pushy.  It is a delightful restaurant and well worth a visit for a really special experience.

We loved the food and were just as impressed with the size of the bill .  Four starters, four main courses, lots of drinks and coffee, just two hundred lira.  They had given us a generous 10% discount and we were also given free liqueurs.  we will certainly go back and would not hesitate to recommend it.

Agree with Fener for a cheap meal in a great location and also for a special meal Sandal's (under the Pirat hotel at the side of the harbour) food is great and the view from the upstairs terrace is great and unusual as it looks across to the town, down the harbour and out to sea. We also like Akin for a medium priced meal (across from Doy Doy), friendly staff, good view and nice food.

Have you tried Mango?  On the Kalamar Road had a fabulous meal there last time I was in Kalkan, it's quite new think this is the second season the food was extremely good and so was the service,  the staff went out of their way to make myself and my family very welcome,  looking forward to going there again next month!
