I think the fees to change travellers cheques are very high - I was charged upto 18% in Bodrum the year before last.

We take sterling and change it in Kalkanfor ytl but I know lots of people have a Nationwide account as they do not charge for any withdrawals abroad.

There are lots of places to change cash though.

Currently have a duplex apartment in Kiziltas which we visit as often as we can.

Travellers Cheques do not seem that popular and the banks seem unfamiliar with them. In fact in recent years the banks / building societies have either not accepted them or only accepted them with a tax number (obtainable in Kas)- not sure what the current policy is. I have also heard of some banks in more remote areas who have never even seen them before! When they have been accepted a high charge is added- very different from US or UK where they are accepted as cash. I would avoid bringing them to Turkey and favour either cash or withdrawals at cashpoint on a card.

When you say cash do you mean sterling or Lira,? Do they accept sterling in Restaurants and Shops or just Banks?
Thanks

Cash you are best to bring £''s as it would seem the exchange rates are better here in Turkey than in the UK

Hi Sunlover - forget travellers chqs and euros just take some lira and sterling to change when you are out there - and as been previously mentioned - I think it is a nationwide flex account that charges no withdrawal/commission fee!!  Exchange rates are better in turkey than here (although pretty dire at the moment!!)

Cheers!

we were getting more last year on our nationwide Flex account than many of the places that change money were offering and as you so rightly say it''s a free service ;) we just take currency for the first couple of days and some sterling for emergencies ;)

We took travellers cheques a few years ago and it was very difficult getting them changed, we needed a tax number whcih fortunately we needed anyway as we had bought a property. There are now lots of ATMs in Kalkan.

Can only echo others problems with travellers cheques. Until a few years ago had cashed them with no problem at the post office but that suddenly changed and we had to go to Kas and almost jump through burning hoops in a bank to get them cashed.
Use my Nationwide card now and no problems.
