Buying Wine by the Case
« on: March 02, 2008, 10:24:36 AM »
Does anyone know if it is possible to by the likes of Cankaya, Angora & Lal by the case and if so where?

The last time we were out at New Year, Cankaya was expensive at over 14YTL a bottle.  Wondered what the savings might be if we bought a case of each if the above wines?

I know you can buy Efes by the case and it works out significantly cheaper.

Sorry can''t help with the wine...but when you say EFES by the case - what exactly you do you mean..we buy the packs of 4 bottles and sometimes we buy them sealed in a pack of 12 x 4 packs I guess it is - cellophane wrapped with cardboard base - but Im pretty sure you just pay the same price.....can you enlighten us..as the hot summer is on its way and boy do those EFES go down quick...!!  :o

Yeah Felicity I thought the same, buying 4 is the same price as buying a case of 24 - so bankieken if you know something we don''t do please tell us!

You must have missed one of my previous postings in the Everything Else Area, (2nd page of "It makes me Smile"), so I will repeat it here. Buy Turkish wines and Efes by the bottle or case including mixed cases from wwwtasteturkey.com

Maybe I didn''t make myself clear in the original post - I wish to by the wine by the case when we are in Kalkan.

With regards buying Efes by the case I can advise that I know of two scenarios.

Negotiate a price with the local supermarket for a bulk purchase and delivery of the 24 bottles in the rigid plastic case.

Buy direct off the delivery van that drops of the Efes to the supermarket.

I am aware that the price for a 500ml bottle can work out at 1.5YTL using the above methods.

Sorry, I thought you meant to buy and enjoy at home. Never mind, at least if anyone wants to buy some here they now know. We just need a response to your specific question and we have cracked it!!!

Efes is really cheap when you buy it by the case in the large supermarket in the centre of Fethiye. It worked out significantly cheaper than what we were paying in Kalkan but as it was a day before our flight home we didn''t buy any :(
Better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt :)

Just ask in any of the supermarkets, they will sell you a case of wine.  As for discounts, if you don''t ask you don''t get... (I did - and did).

Any chance of indicating the level of discount that is achievable?

As any discount is at the discretion of the shopowners I''m afraid it would be wrong to put words in their mouths, but I''m sure if you ask nicely at the checkout they will oblige - same as if you were haggling for goods in the market really.  Bulk purchases, generally speaking, come with a small discount but there is not a ''standard'' discounted price for boxes of wine so it would be wrong for me to quote one.

Hi.  I did stop a Kavaklidere van in Kalkan in September and asked whether they would deliver direct: YES.  He gave me a card, but I don''t have it here.  Check out: http://www.kavaklidere.com/kavak/english/takvimset.htm .  If you go to About Us > Kavaklidere on Turkey, you will see they have a place in Fetiyeh with contact details.  I have not checked yet, but you may be able to order online.  I had a great bottle of Doluca (http://www.doluca.com/giris.asp) - can''t remember the name but you should check their products too.

Normally, I would try to buy from local traders, but I have experienced very variable quality of the same wines.  I wonder whether it is local storage conditions especially in the summer.  One bottle I bought last year managed to break two corkscrews as the cork was so dry.
