Title: 180 Day tourist visa
Post by: Lizilu20 on July 02, 2012, 01:49:14 PM
Hi All, sorry if this is a daft question....We came to Kalkan at Easter this year, therefore we know we are covered for 180 days before we need to buy a new visa, however, when we land at dalaman, do we still queue at the visa counter to prove this, or can we go straight to passport control ???  Just don't want to have to queue twice if we don't need to.  :)

Yes Nicky, as far as I'm aware, you should not have to purchase a new visa until december (180 days from the first day of your holiday in june), but you cannot already be in Turkey when it expires. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong  :)

Yes, from your dates, you will both be okay.
This explains it fairly well:
http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/europe/turkey/#entryRequirements
As it says: "From 1 February 2012 the rules will be fully enforced, and you will only be able to stay in Turkey for a total of 90 days in any period of 180 days."
And as Lizilu20 says, you must not be in Turkey on the 180th day of your Visa.

I know Skunk, I'm getting excited now!!! I really enjoy writing holiday reports when I'm in Kalkan as it's also like a diary for us to look back on in the cold winter months and reminisce....Just don't want to bore everyone though!!! ;D

;D ;D ;D Skunk, I love reading holiday reports too. I picture the scenarios in my minds eye as I'm reading! Anyway, if/when you get fed up of my ramblings about our (bi)annual vacation you lot can always tell me to shut up  and I won't take offence - I'll just drown my sorrows in Lal rose while lounging by the pool overlooking the magnificent view of mouse and snake islands!!! BRING IT ON!!! ;D ;D ;D

I entered Turkey on 25th April, 2012 and stayed for a period of 37 days.  If I want to come back on 15th October for a period of 18 days leaving on the 1st November, overlapping the 180 day limit, but having only been in Turkey for 55 days total, or 44 days in the 180 day period, what's the form?  Can anyone advise  ???

Maybe you should look at residency, you're almost there!  ;D
Otherwise you might be looking at a trip to Meis to stay overnight, making sure you don't spend your 180th day in Turkey?
Let's see what others say......

Chris S has raised a valid point and the only one I haven't seen an answer to. Obviously he comes regularly to Turkey as an owner. But if we took it down to the regular package holiday tourist, how does that work. For example, let's say someone booked early season for a 14 day holiday, enjoyed it, and decided to book another package holiday for late season for 10 days. What if the 10 days spans the end of the 180 days. What would they do or what would happen?

We went to Kas to find out about renewing a VISA that runs out on 21st Sept this year.  We were told by a very helpful guy in the MEIS Line office that they cannot renew VISA's at a port.  He took our Passports to the Police station to check, as we thought we could overnight in Meis on the 21st (our 180th day) and then come back on the 22nd or 23rd (which would be Day number 1 of a new VISA).  However we were told that PORTS cannot issue a new VISA...to be honest he really spend some time on it.  However, I am not sure if anyone really knows how this works...when we left a few days ago, I asked at Dalaman airport when our current VISA that we bought roughly around the same time as Chris (end April 2012) would run out, to see if I could get an exact date..however the guy at Passport Control just said, "it runs out in 6 months"...not very helpful, considering he had just 'swiped' my passport and should have known exactly when my VISA run out and how many days I had left of my 90 allowance....

Useful site for calculating the 180th day to see when your tourist visa runs out.
I think you will have to put in the date you obtained your visa and then add 179 days, as the day you got it is counted as 1 day.

Chris S

The visa allows you to spend up to 90 days in a 180 day period.  It does not mean that if you have not used your full 90 day allowance you can go over the 180 day limit. So if you have just used 55 days of your potential 90, you must still leave Turkey on day 179.

If you did overstay beyond your visa expiry date, you would be fined ( heavily) on departure and depending on the length of the overstay, you could be banned from re-entering Turkey for a period of between six months and three years.

It is no longer possible to renew visas by going to Meis either for the day or overnight.  As others have pointed out, if you do spend a lot of time here, it makes sense to take out residency, provided you can meet the criteria.

If you find all this confusing, you could contact the British Consulate in Fethiye. The staff there are all very helpful and speak excellent English.

Yay! What a useful website! Saves loads of counting whilst crouched over the 2013 calendar. Many thanks for this link.

Hi
I booked my flights a year ago before the 180 day visa was available. Unfortunately my visa runs out 8 days into my 2 week holiday this year, as I came out in March.
Any idea how I can sort out this problem?
Can I just buy a new visa? Should I just pay the huge fine on leaving Turkey? Or maybe I should phone the Turkish Embassy in the UK before I leave?
Thanks in advance
Em

Hi Em1

You must not be in Turkey on the 180th day.  You have to leave, but apparently you can't just go to Meis now. I would ring the Embassy for advice if I were you.

Apparently there is to be an update on the visa situation tomorrow on KTLN. There is an important piece of news which has held this up being published earlier this week. Hopefully it clears up the grey areas for us all.

The official stance is currently - http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa
I found the best update on this site - http://www.akbukturkey.com/tourist_visas.html

Hope that helps :)

Happy days!! An extra £20 to spend on Efes.  Hubby and I were in Kalkan in May and are going back the end of August.  Straight to Passport Control when we land.
