Title: WhatsApp and Facebook
Post by: Bob & Jayne on June 28, 2012, 09:54:50 PM
Hi everyone

Just introduced another EK member to WhatsApp and was wondering whether any other of you EK members use it? If you want any information about it, personal message us.  It is brilliant though. The same goes for Facebook, how many of us are on Facebook?  :)

You don't need an iPhone for whatsapp. In fact, you have to pay for it on the iPhones, whereas it's free on android phones and I think blackberry too.

I have an iPhone and don't pay for whats app if I am texting or sending photos to another iPhone/Android user if it goes via WiFi in Kalkan or elsewhere for that matter.  last year I had WiFi cover (having signed in) at Cafe del Mar, Merkez to name but 2. Toni

Sorry, I think you misunderstood what I meant by 'pay'. What I meant was pay for the app itself when you first install it, not pay for the messages that you send on it, I believe that the app costs approx 65p on an iPhone but free on android.
Whatsapp uses a data connection to send messages, pictures and videos to other whatsapp users. You can also set up groups of users, send one message and all in the group will receive it, all for free over a wi-fi connection from/to any country. Once installed it automatically adds any of your existing contacts that are already using whatsapp.
We find it invaluable for keeping in touch with our apartment management team in Kalkan. Any issues, they can quickly update us or send a picture through straight from their mobile. We also used it with the estate agent and solicitor during the purchase process.

Could someone help me get on to this then please?  I am afraid I am pretty clueless about anything remotely techy.  O0

...and you can use it when you are not in any country, as I use it to keep in touch with a mate who is at sea for 3 or 4 months at a time. The crazy thing is, you can see when they are typing. I was in Norway this week, and Dave was just approaching South Africa in a storm; all for free.

Is that sad?!

You can also use the Tango App, which is free, on i-phones, i-pad, android and windows phones but not on Blackberry phones. This allows you to speak or have a video call for free from one Tango user to others provided you are wi-fi connected. Unfortunately you can not send text, though you can leave a voice or video message if the recipient is unavailable.
It allows you to use the phone camera to send live pictures so for example if you want to show your friends the meal you are about to eat, or the sunset you are watching you can do so.
Our managing agent has used it to show us something he thought needed doing.

Apparently, Whatsapp is only free for the trial period.

OK, it's only USD1 per annum after that - but that's not free.  If you connect via 3G data (etc) instead of WifFi it will eat up your allowance - Use only on WiFi...!
