Title: Double Tipping!
Post by: killiedaft on June 17, 2012, 09:54:45 AM
We recently had friends staying with us who had a meal at The Fish Terrace. It was an enjoyable meal but not cheap. They were given the bill which was folded over with the total price on the outside. They paid this and  gave another 10% for tip not realising that The Fish Terrace and Korsan Meze already add a "discretionary" tip to the bill - but with this not shown on the outside - many people have given a tip twice.

Our friends were most annoyed and we have heard the same from other people.

Whilst we generally give a tip we do not want to do this twice so visitors should check their bill to see if a tip has been added. Our friends have intimated that they will not be going back there.

We went there twice last year (to the terrace) - first time was fine but the second time, having booked a table 3 days beforehand, we were stuck bang next to the live band and they were very offhand when we asked to move.  The meal was very average and the price extortionate for what it was.  Not going back this time, needless to say!  Probably didn't notice the discretionary tip either!! Good advice Killiedaft.  >:D

I so hate this adding of gratuities on bills and not making it clear on menus and on the final bill. Ending up with 20% is not correct.

I like to add a tip not have it added for me. I believe I am generous with tips but if I discovered a discretionary tip had already been added to my bill I would not return or recommend!

The Fish Terrace has always been one of our favourites, this year however we felt there was something missing, the quality of the food produced was mediocre.  We did leave the usual tip, and certainly would not have double tipped - we will certainly be more careful next time!

The easy answer is - always check your bill no matter how well you THINK you know the restaurant & it's staff.  It's very easy to become complacent with your so called favoured establishments & those that have been recommended.  Sometimes it very interesting/disturbing just what has been put on your final bill.  We have been offered things believing that they are 'on the house' to find them being charged for.

DRBD - you are entirely correct, lesson learned!
