Title: Best meze?
Post by: dshiels on May 12, 2012, 08:24:05 PM
We arrive on Monday evening and have the inlaws with us for their first experience of Kalkan and Turkey.  They haven't ever really travelled much or been too adventurous with their food so I'm looking forward to introducing them to Turkish cuisine.

I have been trying to chose a restaurant for our first night and I think I nice meze would be a good way for them to sample a few Turkish dishes and flavours and will be quite relaxed after our day travelling.  I have often had a mixed meze as a started but is there any recommended restaurants were we can just have meze as our whole meal with larger portions than you would get as starters?

Starting to get very excited!

I would recomend the Meze at the Rose restaurant, its the best we have found in Kalkan so far; although despite trying hard we cannot claim to have tried them all.

Its sold as a starter but almost large enough to be a meal in itself, and at 10TL is great value. 3 between 2 would be plenty for most people.

You get all the usuals plus a couple of Eastern Turkish items we hadn't come across before and some excellent courgette fritters. It also comes with a really fresh tasting pomegranete dressed salad and flat breads made to order in their wood fired oven

We had a great meze at Bread and More on the Kalamar Road a couple of weeks ago. It was about 20 lira for 2 but was fabulous and I said I could have eaten it by myself as a main course. It was certainly enough for 3 or 4 as a starter.

Chillies for me. Choose exactly way you want from the days selection.
Fener also excellent.
To be honest, you can't go far wrong in Kalkan on the meze front.

The Olive garden do a great meze called the Sultans banquet, it has everything, soup, starters, dips various kebabs, coffee, deserts. Three people could easily share 2

Rose restaurant is where extinct fish used to be, next door to the old Oz Adana - more or less opposite the Samira hotel (from the moonlight bar head up the hill and turn right near the roundabout).  There's always Korsan Meze - some of their dishes are quite good and it's on the harbour for THAT view!  :) ;) :)

We always go to Korsan Meze on our first evening and have their meze starter of the day....to get us in 'the mood'
They have lots of choice and as skunk says.....a view to die for!

Thanks everyone for the recommendations.

We actually ended up in Chillies.  It is somewhere we always wanted to try as we didn't manage to get visit in our last trip to Kalkan two years ago and as we are staying along Kalamar Rd, it was also very handy as we didn't make out to eat until late as the little one needed a snooze (she hadn't slept since 3am so either had I!)

I have to say, it was fantastic, we just asked them to surprise us with a variety of dishes and surprised we were at the quality of the food, the fantastic and friendly service and how low the bill was!

I did feel guilty at times as it was like having a free babysitting service, but I'm not complaining!

Chillies is our favorite, glad you enjoyed it and they are still on form.  Can't wait till September when we go! :)
