Title: Driving in Kalkan
Post by: Bexscho on April 29, 2012, 11:50:33 AM
Hi

I am visiting Kalkan for the 3rd time end of August! 8)  With the rise in taxi prices I am considering renting a car for a day or so for day trips to Kaputas/patara.

How have people found driving in Kalkan?  Has it been worthwhile?   :)

Thanks
Vanessa

As long as you keep your eyes open, your wits about you and be prepared for the unexpected, you will be OK.  I had a few hairy moments, but lived to tell the tale.  Strangely enough, I have Turkish friends who visit the UK, and they flatly refuse to drive, as they say it is too scary

Driving in and around Kalkan is a doddle. Just expect the unexpected, like scooter riders on the wrong side of the road, cars with poor or no lights and vehicles turning out into your path.
The plus side is that there is far less traffic than there is at home and, with a 90km speed limit, you have slightly longer to re-act.

If its just Kaputas and Patara you want to visit you can get the bus/dolmus to both :)

Driving round here is not a problem as long as you keep your wits about you. Cars here are fitted with lights, indicators and wing mirrors but unfortunately a significant number of the local drivers are not aware that the vehicles are fitted with these accesories and consequently do not use them. They do however like to use the horn.

If you use taxis regularly then hiring a car can be a cost effective option, especially if you take a package that includes them picking you up/dropping you off at the airport. As others have said if you expect the unexpeced its fine, and you have the freedom to explore as and when. I can recommend a company we use if you need options, just pm me
