Title: Street Dog Collection
Post by: kim21 on April 26, 2012, 07:27:20 AM
Hi Everyone,
An announcement was made by the Beliyde yesterday that they would be collecting any dogs left out on the streets of Kalkan today, so if you are a dog owner and living in Kalkan Make sure that you keep him in today. I know that believing this from somebody with the green 'watched' enjoykalkan tag is rather like believing something from a 1930's Honika celebrating German in Berlin, but hey, I like everyone else understands that every 'regime,' has it's ways of dealing with its undesirables, so try to ignore the tag AND KEEP YOUR DOG IN TODAY.

I shudder to think (sorry if that is controversial) .....as one dog owner to others....please keep your dogs safely where you know where they are! This goes for wherever you live.....in Kent where I live we have the highest rate of dog snatching in this country and if you have a mad dog like mine he would happily trot off with anyone!

Please do not panic everyone. It seems that a lot of people heard the announcement yesterday about cats and dogs but very few understood the whole message. The belediye loud speakers are loud but not always clear and when the belediye makes an announcement concerning animals people tend to assume the worst!

The announcement was actually asking dog owners to abide by the law and not  let unneutered dogs roam the streets. It also said that there have been far too many puppies dumped in Kalkan in recent months and that this kind of dumping is illegal.

We are having the announcement translated into English word for word and as soon as this has been done we shall post it on here. Above is the link to the Kalkan belediyesi website where the Turkish version can be seen and they too will be putting the English translation on the website as soon as it is ready.

Here is the English translation:

ANNOUNCEMENT
Recently there has been a significant increase in the number of puppies being brought to Kalkan and abandoned.
In order to ensure the welfare of Kalkan and to reduce the inconvenience caused to its residents by stray animals  and to prevent the further proliferation of unwanted animals,  and to ensure that  street animals live in the  most appropriate  environmental conditions, it is kindly requested that;
•   Dogs and cats should not be brought in to Kalkan from neighbouring districts and villages to be abandoned,
•   Dog owners should keep their dogs under control at all times by keeping them on a leash in public areas,
•   Owners of cats and dogs should ensure that their pets have regular health checks and that their vaccinations are kept up to date.
•   Dog owners should definitely not allow their dogs to roam freely if unneutered.

Please note that the above mentioned are obligatory by law and we request that everyone complies with the principles in question.

Phew, thanks for the translation Kapsa, my heart was in my mouth when I read this thread initially.  While in Kalkan recently, we were accompanied some nights by a particular dog as we walked down the kalamar rd. One night it walked with us to the moonlight bar and sat at my OH's feet while we had our drinks, we felt like it was protecting us. I know that not everyone would be happy with this but we were and I would hate to think of anything resembling a mass cull taking place.

It's encouraging to know that the Belidiye are taking some steps to address the situation.  Let's hope that by pointing out that dumping puppies and allowing unneutered dogs to roam freely is against the law will have some effect.

kalkanbelle...I think your dog must have known you liked him/her, they always seem very astute and perceptive at knowing when they're wanted. The ones near us only come over as they know we love to see them but they totally ignore others who don't bother or are indifferent.

Kalkan Magic - I think you  were referring to Lizilu20's post although the same could apply to me as I love to have a bit of company on my walks in and out of the village.  Yes the dogs are very astute in knowing who likes them and who doesn't and showing them a little love and enjoying their companionship makes my holiday all the more enjoyable.  I do appreciate however that not everyone feels the same and may find it annoying if they are not dog lovers or fear them.

I also read on this forum that sometimes the dogs stay with you because they feel safer. They fear attack from other less friendly dogs who are wary of humans, so don't bother them whilst they appear to be in your company - not sure how true this is :-\

KAPSA - do you have any idea what prompted the Beleydise to make this announcement? Has the dumping of dogs got worse than in previous years? How many dogs are we talking about being dumped in Kalkan over the last few months? Sorry for questions but the answers may give a better overall insight to the issue. Thanks

Was eating at Merkez last night. Very quiet and only saw 2/3 dogs. Makes a difference. Maybe owners were keeping them in as a result of the announcement. I like animals but don't particularly want them following me around or hanging around whilst I'm eating. I'm sure not much will change but maybe a step in the right direction.

Happy days –Sorry, I don’t think it is our place to speak on behalf of the Belediye, perhaps you could ask them.   Having said this though, we are naturally very pleased that the Belediye is now beginning to address this issue. There are at least as many owned dogs on the streets of Kalkan as there are strays, so if the Belediye is now impressing on people that they need to take their ownership responsibilities seriously then this can only be a very good thing for Kalkan. Already we have had reported sightings of people walking their dogs on leads where normally these same dogs would have been wandering freely!
As far as we know there have been roughly 35 dogs (majority of which were puppies) dumped in or near Kalkan since the beginning of this year. Despite this though, the total number of street dogs in Kalkan has changed little. The reason for this is that this winter we have managed to home at least 20 puppies/dogs (many outside Kalkan) Another 8 dogs have gone from Kalkan and we know of at least 5 that have died.
We hope that the Belediye’s message is now getting to other villages in the area too, after all dumping of dogs is not unique to Kalkan, sadly it has been the main method of dog control (albeit very short sited) all over Turkey since Ottoman times.
I hope this goes some way to answering your questions if not please feel free to come to talk to us when you are next in Kalkan. That goes for everyone BTW.

KAPSA - thank you for response. 35 dogs since the turn of the year is a lot for a town the size of  Kalkan. It shows the challenge faced to stop the dog population from getting unmanageable. Hopefully word will spread to the outlying villages that the dumping of dogs  is unlawfull. Keep up the good work in finding the dogs permanent homes.
