Title: Current FX rate
Post by: pw on March 31, 2012, 03:18:59 PM
Can anyone in Kalkan tell me what the current GBP exchange rate is in town please?
ATM & local shops rates would be appreciated.

M&S currently selling @ 2.734.

Cheers,

PW

Sainsbury's 2.70 a few minutes ago. Probably the worst rate in a supermarket.

I have been slowly gathering up our TL over the winter from M&S at an exchange rate varying from 2.69 to close to 2.8 and the average has been 2.75.  We have another few hundred still to change, but if that is the current rate in Kalkan, then perhaps it is better that we wait until we are there and just change it locally which will also mean we are not left with too much TL left over, although that never seems to be a problem!

I didn't want to make the same mistake as last year, as when we were in Dalyan last June the rate dropped to around 2.3 - 2.4

After 3 great holidays in Kalkan, we've decided to have a wee change this year and try Kas (hope we don't live to regret it!) at the end of May.  Does anyone know whether the same arrangements apply re being able to exchange £sterling for Lira in shops etc?  Hotels seem to quote in Euros rather than sterling so maybe that's their preferred currency for payment of airport transfers etc?  Also, does anyone know if there are plenty of ATMs for us to draw out Lira, and if there are any tips on the best ones in terms of charges/commission etc?

Thanks.

Plenty of ATMs in Kas.  I remember many years ago when there was only one ATM machine in Kalkan and it was out of order for a few days we had to drive to Kas to get money!  There were plenty of machines then so I'm sure many more now. We always use lira or sterling when shopping in Kas so can't see you having any problems.  I'm sure you will have a lovely holiday in Kas - as they say a change is as good as a rest and you're only half an hour away from Kalkan if you miss it! Enjoy.

Euros is the dominant foreign currency in Kas. Everything in the shops and at the market display in Euros and Turkish Lira. You can ask for the sterling rate and pay in sterling though, no problemo :)

Denners, no need to be rude, people can ask questions about Kas if they wish.

If you want to ask questions about Kas I'm sure our helpful members will assit. It might be worthwhile asking in the 'other resorts section'.

Thanks for the info Charlie and kalkan4eva.

No offence taken re Denners' remarks - how I wish there was an equivalent site for Kas as I do love to plan my hols to death (where to eat and drink especially!).  Tripadvisor forum isn't all that well used for Kas either.  Hopefully it'll all be fine, and as has been pointed out we can pop back to Kalkan if we feel the need.

If I have any other qs I'll post them in the right section of the forum though.  Cheers folks.

Last year we bought lire before we left home and found we would have got a better rate if we had waited until got to Kalkan and changed £s there. Will be doing just that this year.
