one of the main drawbacks about anywhere hot is that pesky mozzie!!! we alays buy raid and blast the rooms, we use Kov,even the boots own brand with extra deet!!but still they get through our defences..iv'e even stopped putting on aftershave...iv'e used lemon cologne and all it's done is made me smell like a mozzie pancake!!!by the second week they tend to leave me alone...possible alchohol level high ::) has anyone got any tips for keeping the little devils at bay?
-
Absolutely swear by Avon Skin so soft, the original blue/green bottle. Up until I tried this a few years ago I was absolutely plagued by Mozzies and was so bad one year had to have my bites lanced :'( not a pleasant experience!
Someone recommended skin so soft and for the last few years I've used it with spectacular results. I use the shower gel, then slap on the body lotion before I go out in the evening, also use the local Zin Kov or whatever it's called as extra precaution. Cannot recommend it highly enough and I've already got my supplies for when I'm next out at the end of June.
-
Also meant to say I had tried vitamin B complex tablets, garlic tablets, marmite and I think Brewers yeast, all of which I had been told would help and nothing did. Also took course of antihistamines before going but all to no avail. The mozzies got me and I suffered horrible allergic reaction every time. Skin so soft is the only thing to work for me.
-
Snap!! the Avon Skin So Soft is the best for most people. I also take one a day antihistamines for a week before I go and during my holiday to reduce the allergic reaction. I once had an infected bite and my doctor recommended brewers yeast as she used that when she worked in Africa. Hopefully the council are keeping on top of the regular spraying in Kalkan to kil the blighters.
-
zzzzzzzz....apparently the little blighters are not soooooo bad this year (well yet anyway!!) - coz they have not had so much rain over the winter and lying water for the breeding things..!! However - I won't believe that until i don't feel them biteing me - personally I find SinKov or Off the best spray on - saves a fortune on nicer perfume of an evening LOL!! Also - we make sure we close our windows at dusk and pop in one of those electric Raid tabs and we find those precautions generally work!!
-
Can I just ask- I'm on the Avon website as I've heard that skin so soft works before so i'm definatley going to buy some- is it the dry oil body spray that i need to get ?
-
Hi Kalkan Jules. I'd be wary of using the dry oil spray as if any of it gets on tiled floors it turns them into a skating rink! might not get bitten but probably break a limb or two. Best to get the body lotion or the body souflle, they also do a shower gel.
-
Thanks for that I didn't realise there were so many products until I clicked the next couple of pages !! ::)
There's a sale on at the moment too for everyone that want's to stock up ! Think i'll buy the shower gel, shaving foam, mosturiser... you can never have too many beauty products, lol ! ;D
-
just had a look on their web site and they got both available. price for both of them is only £4 and will be the best £4 you'll spend this year. Remember it's apparently only the blue/green one, think it's called soft and fresh which works, the other fragrances don't seem to do the job.
-
It is strange and I hate to advertise but whilst I can not wear Avon makeup, the only suncream that works for me is Avon, if I use any other regardless of price I get prickly heat something shocking. So look like I will be getting skin so soft to keep away the mozzies, but it will also act as an after sun. So thanks for that. Should we start a link of what you use for prickly heat.
-
Yes- prickley heat is something else I get !!!
-
thankfully I've never had prickly heat but my mum used to regularly get it. I remember she was told that the only way to avoid it was to keep her skin free of any sun products as they blocked the pores and made it worse. She had to have cool showers regularly, completely cover up from the sun and take antihistamine. Not much fun :(
-
thanks for the tip regards Avon...we will defo give it a whirl..anything is worth a try.don't you just dread putting the light out and hearing that dreaded zzzzzzzzz..only to see nothing when the light goes on :D
-
The Avon dry oil spray is my deterrent of choice, it smells nice, gives your arms and legs a sexy shine and the mozzies can't bite. Just be careful when you put it on,(stand on atowel). I also close all the windows and spray all the rooms with Raid before we go out to kill any lingerers. It does not matter which scent you pick, all the range as the same effect. Apparently Lord Lichfield use to insist on the photo. models using it when they were on location in far away places!!
-
I too discovered Avon skin so soft last year and didn't get quite so many bites as in previous years. My other half didn't use it "girly stuff" and suffered for his error/vanity!!
We both used it while in Egypt at Xmas and it cetrainly seemed to work.
I hear that our troops are very taken with it and have been bulk ordering. This may be a sales ploy however!!

Just a little tip ;D
-
We tend to use Mosquito Milk....solution from Boots I think, I suffer badly with bites and the reaction, sounds like it might be worth trying the Avon product....
-
Can someone give me some more details of the Avon Skin so Soft product to deter the little blighters.....been on the Avon website and not too sure what product I should be looking at......
-
Soft and fresh (it's in a green/blue container) comes in body lotion, body souflee, dry oil spray but be careful when applying this as if it gets on the floor makes it very slippy, and shower gel. All on special just now and cost around £2 each. go on to web site and search under "shop by product line" this will bring up complete skin so soft range.
Hope this helps :)
-
ok forget that last post i've just checked and it's moved :o search under shop by category for "soft and fresh" and it brings up entire range. Hope they don't move it again!!!!!!!!!!
-
we found it.....funny how it has become the must have birthday gift.....good advice jon :D
-
Well now we have all covered ourselves with soft and fresh, what do you recommend for the balcony? Citronella candles or containers of plants to keep them away?
-
joan...if all else fails try the flip flop method!!lets hope the avon stuff works...one year one of the little blighters got me on the end of my hooter!!well...i kid you not it was illuminous in the dark..for a day or so i looked like Barry Manillow on red nose day! ;D
-
Once got bitten above my eye resulting in it swelling up and completely closing, looked like I'd been in a brawl :-[ worst ever though was when my legs got so badly bitten that it looked like I had bunches of grapes hanging from them, was so bad I had to go to the doc and have them lanced and drenched in iodine :'( yuk was soooooooooo awful. Anyway since discovering skin so soft I've had very few bites and what a difference it makes to my holiday :)
Still enjoy chasing them around the room with a flip flop though!
-
If you own a villa here in Kalkan, some men should be coming round every 2 weeks to put insecticide down your toilets and another truck sprays outside. The variety of mosquito most common in Kalkan breeds not in open water like pools, but in septic tanks which most villas have. Hence the product goes down the toilet and into the drains on the lowest floor. They also sprayed inside our garage and behind our pool.
If no one is at home in your villa when they come round, they will not return until you call them or go to the municipality to ask for them.
-
Really - this is most interesting - i have never heard of this before...how do we check it out and make sure that is happening - certainly nobody came round last year..!!
-
They did come to us several times last year but we were always here. This year we returned mid-April and they had not come since sometime in March. I waited until last week then sent our gardener to look for them. He went to the Belediye and asked for the phone number of the company responsible for spraying. They came yesterday to do the spraying. They also told us they had come to this area some weeks ago but no one was at home at the time ... so they said.
-
They were certainly spraying all around the town last year. We were enveloped in the spray whilst having a drink at the Pasha. We had to quickly put beer mats over our drinks and wrap our pashminas round our faces, it was not a pleasant experience, and on another night the clouds od fumes drifted over the retaurant we were in, fortunately our food had not been served but others were not so lucky. The mozzies did not like it either and buzzed off inside!!
-
my partner had a very nasty one on her ankle... the whole ankle swelled up!!she went to Dr gem (above savile supermarket)he said it was probably due to the skeeter injecting the Benzine that is sprayed about if it doesnt kill it, it still has it in it's evil little body..last year a few of us night owls were still about when they were spraying in the early hours...(moonlight) ::)
-
Must have been the same night I was there blue lizard!
-
JoanH you asked what you could use on the balcony. Last year we were advised by the the guy with the jewellery stall on Kalamar Road to burn joss sticks. I can't remember what the fragrance was, but it certainly worked and only cost about £1. Either that, or he advised us to buy a huge fan and blow them away.
-
Right I'm on the Avon Website and found the following:
Avon Skin-so-Soft Dry Oil Body Spray
&
Skin-so-Soft Replenishing Body Lotion
both are in a turquiose / white plastic containers / bottles, I am assuming this is the product we are all talking about....yes or no ?
-
Hi Truffle
Sounds like the correct ones, the colour is a bluey/green and is called soft and fresh. Can't emphasise enough though about how slippy the floor becomes if you get the dry oil spray and it gets on the floor! As someone else said put a towel on the floor and stand on it when you use the spray. The lotion os easier as it's not in spray form so is less likely to end up on the floor.
-
Hi everyone
I just wondered if anyone has used the 'boots aftersun with insect repellant' ? Ive been using it for the last three years now and have found it to be wonderful stuff (or the mozzies just dont like me, either way im happy).
I have used the skin so soft before and it is great for keeping them at bay but found the dry oil spray to be a bit too oily for me.
Just thought I would suggest an alternative.
Oh by the way its 'buy one get one free' at the mo as well.
Im stocking up.
-
Distracted from this site for a moment by the Avon one! I've put in my order and also qualified for a free Antler Cabin Case! All very good prices. My mum used the original SSS product 20 years ago at least! Thanks for the Birthday tip too!
-
Managed an entire fortnight without getting a single mozzie bite, got home at the weekend went for a walk and got two of the biggest itchiest midge bites ever! The Scottish midge, don't you just love them!
-
this year is a lot better,we had a couple of weeks with hardly any bites at all..we used repellant just in case ,but the mozzie blasting has been put out to a new company this year, they are the blokes in purple!!they still go through the streets with the 4x4 stink machine!! but also have detachable ones that they can go anywhere with, this year they have done drains etc and you can get propertys done if you wish......either way it's better!!! ;)
-
Thank you so much for this advice. I've just ordered a truckload - it's half price at the moment! :) May even manage to get hubby to use it.
-
Hi all - the mozzies seem sooooo much better this year - having just returned from a week - I didn't get 1 bite - didn't use any electrical device in the bedroom, didn't hear that dreaded zzzzz'ing in the dark and didn't spray....a so much more pleasant experience - I hope this carries on throughout this and the other seasons...at this rate - I might have to change my villa instructions to - mozzies rare - instead of mozzies rampant..LOL!! ;D
-
The belediye is offering the mozzie eradication programme free of charge to all properties - we have fortnightly visits from the men in purple who have backpacks of spray and go round the garden spraying all possible breeding grounds. Once a week the truck backs down our drive ( no mean feat) and sends out clouds of repellant for about 5 minutes.
The good thing is that this spray does not seem to affect other insects, we still have lots of butterflies, moths and some rather large spiders (Lakeland battery powered vacuum spider catcher is a must)
If you think your property is not being done, contact the belediye and they will make sure it is on the route.

-
Why does the mossie truck do it's rounds just as I've settled down for an Effes on the roof terrace ;D.
Avon sss and citronella tealights keep the blighters off, English mossies seem to like it though make a bee line for me as soon as I get back into our garden, (have ponds and live by a creek)
-
i live by a creek as well, the solent is at the bottom of my road,i got back unscathed by the little devils in kalkan to be chomped alive in my own garden.... >:(
-
Not far from us then Bluelizard, we are in the solent area.(or should that be "monsoon" area :()
-
What Mosquitos?
We have just got back from 2 weeks in Kalkan. We hardly saw one, I came back without a single bite and the worst any of our party of eight suffered was 2 or 3 bites over 2 weeks.
Alan
-
Just returned from Kalkan with my Avon Skin-so-Soft unopened. I didn't see any mosie's this time round in Kalkan.
Last year it was a problem, but it would seem they have cleaned up there act.
-
Me too returned with NOT ONE bite.....will be taking my Avon skin so soft with me again when I go - but hopefully the little blighters have been well and truly controlled for this year - it was an amazing difference....as others have noted - more mossies back here than there - where are the ghost(mossie) busters in purple with their backpacks for all that stagnant water down here in the south of england.... ???
-
It wasnt the mozzies that got me it was the dreaded Olive flies. Thay were a bit late arriving this year because the weather was sooo hot.
-
What's an Olive fly and why are they dreaded?
Alan
-
it's a little tiny black thing..about the size of a pin head,it gets in your hair whether head or arms ,legs etc,and spends it's time nipping ...they are really annoying, normally they are more about in early may...they are not nice!!! >:(
-
Perhaps the little devils are too hot with all that blazing heat
and gone off somewhere cooler & wetter - may be they are making their way to the UK
-
The Olive Flies tend to attack male heads because they have shorter hair. My wife was not affected by them. My head was like the Alps after two weeks with the pests!!
-
Interesting reading this thread, we were in Kalkan the middle two weeks of June and nearly everyone in our hotel was getting badly bitten - except me, with my Avon Skin So Soft! It really did seem to work.
But those of you posting recently and seeing no sign of mozzies - they must be doing something right out there ! Perhaps it's too hot even for the mozzies! Was just warming up while we were there, our last two days were very hot but the rest of the time was just pleasantly warm.
-
I used an aftersun cream from Boots last year that contained insect repellant and never got a single bite. It didn't smell too bad either. I think it was this one http://www.boots.com/shop/product_details.jsp?productid=1081039&classificationid=1027856 It's £6.99 but it's BOGOF on all the Soltan stuff at the moment :)
-
What did I say earlier - we now have them here causing problems, even making the national news ;)
-
It seems only 'sweet-smelling' [to mozzies, that is] people attract them.
As one of those I have suffered over the years and nearly OD'd on antihistamines to try and rid myself of the itching. Now I use Sin Kov, wait until they bite and then take APIS MEL at 4-6 hourly intervals to reduce the itching and swelling. And it works for me. This is a homeopathic remedy available from most chemists in UK. Haven't tried in Kalkan as I take it with me. Hope it helps.
-
Also find to alleviate the itching and swelling Aloe Vera - always buy a large tube from Holland & Barratt especially when on offer, its very good for sun burn etc - infact swear by it
-
I always have an aloe vera plant on my kitchen window sill so if I burn myself I can just snap a bit off and put the sap directly on to it. Natural yoghurt slapped on to sunburn works in an emergency and if the chlorine in pools turns bleached hair green use tomato puree of ketchup to get rid of the green!!! Anymore natural remedies or hints?
-
I too have suffered the dreaded Mozzie bites and have had an allergic reaction so will definitely give the Avon products a go. We used Deet in June and whilst I did get a couple of bites it did seem really effective. I cant remember the exact web address but I think it was called Nomad Travel. They did have buy 2 get 1 free but not sure if that offer is still on.
-
try the boots extra strength..(silver bottle)it's 50% deet and is on offer at the moment...good stuff!! ;)
-
Both my partner and me got bitten by the olive flies in June. They are really horrible, does anyone know of any deterent for these?
-
Loretta
Don''t know if this''ll work but I''m going to try Tea Tree Shampoo & conditioner next time, it''s supposed to work for headlice or so the girl in Boots said. (Not that I''ve got nits, just overheard a conversation)
-
They seem to come out first thing in a morning and early evening. We noticed that as soon they started watering the gardens at 5:30-6:00pm, clouds of them came off the plants. We usually beat a hasty retreat at that time. There was a young couple staying and they always came down to the pool at that time every day and the girl was very badly bitten. So much so that her glands became swollen and she started suffering headaches. I gave her a packet of 1 a day anti-histamines and within a day of taking them and keeping her head covered, she was a lot better. The only solution we could find was keeping your head covered and keep away from greenery, but I still got bites on my legs and arms.
-
Hi littlelin and JoanH. I will give the tea tree shampoo a go and buy an enjoy kalkan cap! We noticed that they seem to come out as the sun was starting to go down. Horrible little blighters.
I have invested in the Avon skin so soft for the mozzies so hopefuly no mozzie or olive fly bites in September!
Lorretta.
-
My OH got bitten a lot by the olive flys in May - I was on the one-a-day anti-histamines & got a few bites but no reaction.
We were told (by a Turk) that the olive flys are only a nuisance when the olive trees are dispersinf their pollen - so hopefully they won''t be around in 19 days time.
-
Loretta,
My partner also gets eaten alive by the Olive flies every June, they seem to swarm around his head. Unfortuntely nothing seems to stop them. Just stay away from Olive trees and greenery in general, the rocky beach clubs suit us best and adopt a hat of some kind as they tend to go for the head. The one consolation is that they are only there during May/June, something to do with pollenation I think.
When we return in September it is never an issue, just the mossies to contend with, which were fewer this year than previous. I''m a fan of Avon Skin so soft, only had two bites in a fortnight in June!!
Anyway just over two weeks to go, can''t wait ;D
Jo
-
Cider vinegar taken in water is supposed to keep them away too (I have a book on uses for vinegar).
-
Wendy, I think I should let you have my avatar and then we can call you "Vinegar Vera". LoL.
-
Wendy, here''s another purported use for vinegar. To stop your dog''s paws from itching. I tried 3 flavors, grape, apple and balsamic. The only problem was ... contrary to the guarantee that I was given together with the suggestion, it didn''t work! She licked off the vinegar and continued chewing her paw. Now she wears booties.
-
Thanks to everyone for your response. I hope what you say is true and they won''t be about late September but I am still taking the tea tree shampoo and a cap (just in case!)
Lorretta.
-
We were in Kalkan in late May and were driven crazy by the olive flies for a couple of days. Then we sprayed the towel on our sun bed with household fly spray 2 or three times during the day and they dissappeared. The only problem was it wasn''t pleasant lying face down because of the smell of the spray but this was a small price to pay.
-
Cossetta, re your dogs paws, my dog has been licking an itchy paw and I put some stuff called ''stop it all''
on, it''s worked. this stuff is all herbal and natural and is good for all sorts. Have a look at the web site, http://www.karenruggles.co.uk/ :)
-
Re the mozzie thing; I dont see any other guys having contributed on this particular string but like everybody else do suffer from time to time. I''ve been in the avonshop.co.uk website and have put those words into their search and it doesn''t want to play. If anybody has the idiots guide to bringing the right section up I''d be much obliged. I did find a Green and Blue bottle by the way but it was 7 quid a time so didn''t really think I was on the right track. Thanks Bill
-
Bill, Go into the Avonshop and on the left hand side use the ''shop by product line'' and select Skin So Soft range. You are looking for the green and blue bottle (fresh) - it''s all there.....the body lotion, shower gel and body spray. About £3 each or the offer is 2 for £4. I used it and it seemed to really work, having said that I don''t think mozzies were a problem in Kalkan this year as the Council have been extremely good in spraying on a regular basis from the beginning of the season.
-
we took skin so soft this year but as said the mozzies were no where near as bad this year, private contractors now have the job of blasting them...not only have they got nice purple uniforms but a 4x4 with a "launcher" on the back for mass destruction and detachable ones similar to leaf blowers that enable them to go where no man has been!!!either way it seems to be vastly improved.....oh has skin so soft for next time just in case purple men are no longer around ;D
-
Thanks for the detailed explanation Charlie and Blue Lizard; you''re right though, with the spraying the situation has definitely improved lately. Just the olive flies which appear to be creating their own problems lately. Who knows, maybe this Avon stuff will sort them out too. Thanks again for your help.
Bill
-
Whatever is biting you Yelkenite, it''s not olive flies. They have a very limited life span, and die off completely before the end of June. They only appear when the olive trees have blossom, which is at the beginning of the season.
Lantan
-
Hehe blue lizard - the men in purple really reminded me of ''ghostbusters''...they were amazing - lifting drains in the road - getting this HUGE tube thing out - poking that down said hole and then their massive hand held launcher....amazing..I hope the men in purple are there next year!! :o
-
Hi everybody, just returned last Sunday from two wonderful weeks in Kalkan - first-timers, but definitely not only-timers. The place is every bit as great as you all said it would be. However, in spite of the Avon Skin So Soft, I did get bitten in the first few days, then I switched to Autan''s family aftersun with anti-mozzie in it and the problem went away. Husband applied the Avon stuff, and guys, it''s a unisex smell, he didn''t peel, but didn''t get bitten either - they all just went for me. Saying all the above, the locals did say there were no where like as many mozzies as usual, but there were these tiny little black insects which gave a nasty nip, mostly during the late afternoon.
-
Olive midges!! :o :o :o
-
Oh no don''t say the Olive flies are still around! Don''t they know they''re supposed to be long gone by now. :o Re the mozzies, maybe there haven''t been so many around this year because it was a very dry winter, plus the regular spraying as well has obviously helped control them.
-
We have 7 olive trees and no olive bugs about. But I have killed 3 mozzies in the last few days. I think the spraying has finished. This past spring the men in purple didn''t only spray. They put insecticide into the septic tanks and that was very effective in killing off the larvae.
-
Well I have invested in the Avon stuff now so it had better work!
-
Or keep it for next year Janey..coz maybe the men in purple won''t be out next year..?? ???
-
Absolutely! But it does smell nice too!
-
Cosetta
I saw the men in purple in Kisla just a few days ago so they ar still around. Maybe you have just had a few that slipped through the net. Not seen any mossies- mind you a few biting flies
Mercimek
-
The avon product doesn''t work in Kalkan.
Best thing is rub some Raki on the ankles, drink half a bottle then you don''t care if the little buggers bite you or not.
Seriously take some anti histamine usually sorts it out. :)
-
Lord durno - there are more in favour that it does on this forum!
Now I''m confused!! >:(
-
have to say that the avon stuff worked tremendously well for me in Kalkan for the last few years. Prior to using it was so badly bitten and had such awful allergic reactions that i needed treatment by doctor including one awful "lancing" of said bites:-s earlier this year no bites at all and hoping for the same in early october when I''m back. i use the shower gel, body lotion, body souffle and finish with the dry oil spray so the blighters don''t stand a chance!
-
Yes it does work.I was bitten very badly last year but used the Avon stuff this year & the only time i was bitten was the 1 night i forgot to put it on.Added bonus it also stops you peeling as well.Oh i did take the antihistamine tablets as well though.
-
Anti histamines won''t stop you from being bitten but can help with allergic reaction though they were no use to me. I react badly whether I take them or not. Thank goodness I found skin so soft!!!! had previously tried everything including vitamin b complex tablets, garlic tablets, marmite and yes did try raki but all to no avail. Got so bad a couple of times that I seriously thought of not going back to Kalkan :o unthinkable I know but it really was that bad.
Not saying it will work for everyone but certainly does for me.
-
Hey Lord durno - looks like you''re deffo in the minority here - ;D ;D ;D maybe your lord like skin doesn''t like the Avon stuff :P I haven''t heard the raki solution - I think i will have to give that a go...what happens when you sweat though - does your skin go all opaque and cloudy..??? ;D :D ;D :D :-X :-X
-
Simple inexpensive solution is to buy Off! or enkov or Sinkov at the supermarket - but if arriving for the first time after dusk make sure your ankles and elbows are well sprayed with a Boot''s mozzie spray as you step off the plane - the b.... will get you even at the petrol station comfort stop!
-
Hi there
i have just returned from kalkan and have come back with dreadful mosquito bites.
They are that bad i have had to go to the doctors twice and i am on a course of antibiotics.
The bites are very painful and have gone into big blisters, which look like grapes on my legs.
has anyone else ever suffered like this, if so what treatment did they have and what do they do to prevent it happening again.
ps this also happend when i was in kalkan during may.
-
Where did all the mozzies go in Aug, I used avon skin so soft and not a single bite, however the other 4 members of the family used nothing and didnt get bitten either, however we did see the sprayer out and about.
-
yeah used to happen to me. When I got the "bunches of grapes" had to have them lanced, drenched in iodine and then oral antibiotics. An absolute nightmare and happened often until I first used skin so soft a few years ago and had no problems since. As I''ve said before I can''t claim that it will work for everyone but most definitely has for me. Got my assortment of skin so soft products already packed for leaving on Thursday. Earlier in the summer I got no bites at all so hoping for the same this time.
-
Hi itstime
thanks for your reply, tried the avon skin so soft and this made no difference to me getting the bites. i only get them on my legs.
had mine lanced today ouch!!
hope you have a great holiday and you don''t get any bites this time.
-
Kalkanchris I feel your pain :( Did they drench you in yukky dark brown iodine stuff? least my legs looked lovely and brown after they did it to me! It''s a real shame that skin so soft doesn''t work for you. Have you tried one or all of garlic tablets, vitamin B supplement, marmite (don''t ask, not sure if you eat it or rub it on!) or course of antihistamines before going to Kalkan? Have to say I''d tried all of them except the marmite as wasn''t sure what to do with it but all to no avail. It''s a real pain and hope you find something that works for you
-
maybe the men in purple are being wound down now the main season is over?we always use the boots own with extra deet(grey container)...when we see it on offer we buy it and put it in the drawer ready for our next visit....we also buy a tin of raid and fumigate the room before leaving and on our return...good excuse to sit outside with a glass of wine!!!(with boots deet on of course!!) hope your pins get better soon.... ;)
-
Think the mozzie-busters must have finished for the season now..although I''m sure the ole place doesn''t sound the same without their van doing the rounds!! I use Mosquito wipes which are MUCH nicer and less smelly than the sprays and creams. Boots make their own in a grey box but the Jungle Wipes are much stronger (with Deet) and guaranteed to protect my legs from the critters at Kleo bar for at least a night out. Having said that, I think the mozzies have been few and far between this summer...they seemed to be much worse at Easter when the stagnant swimming pool water was fatal and the mozzie-busters were only beginning their rounds. My legs are scar free for winter!! ;)
-
The local supermarket stuff - Off! and Sinkof seem to be more effective than expensive GB products - but it does pay to spray the room before going out at night. We even spray on arrival at Dalaman if early evening - they''ll get you at the petrol station comfort stop half way!
-
I thought it was only me who got those horrible blisters. Only got two this year, one in my own back yard in the UK. The first year I got blisters all over my feet(not a good look) got to know the ladies at the chemist very well that year! Came armed with all my SSS goodies this year................no mossies! Hope it''s the same next year. ;D
-
Certainly the mossies seemed sooooooo much better this year - no need to spray the rooms or use the plug in tabs. Just a quick spray of legs and ankles only this summer with Avon so soft or Off or Sinkov (I agree with Alfaman - those turkish sprays are so much better than the UK ones!!) but hardly any bites to speak of - same for the rest family - it was shere blliss this year!!! ;D
-
morning felicity........eljhem....the lizard lives by the creek!! i''m sure you know it......people have been eaten alive here this summer ..worse than turkey!!!the wet weather/poor summer has been just what they wanted...i may suggest the council find some purple men!! ;D ;D
-
What, our council blue? No chance! Kalkan are more organised than Fareham.

i think you are probably right ..seems to be more pests in those offices than anywhere else..... :D
-
the men in purple are no longer about!!!looks like they have stopped spraying for this year..Shakira has just returned and said they wern''t seen and some people were getting bitten ..she was covered in the usual stuff and was o.k....anyone going out soon don''t forget your ....blighter zappers and repellants >:D
-
Blue Lizard - I beg to differ.... I left Kalkan on Monday and I saw the purpule men just the day before.....I know coz we saw the smoke and thought the hotel was on fire...of course turns out that it wasnt!!
-
maybe they weren''t where shakira was!! or she had to much efes!!
-
Yes have seen them today and the large ''fumigating spray''. My theory is that as villas pools are being left uncleaned there is becoming more of a breeding ground for the mossies....mind u the cooler weather should keep them at bay.
-
Strange as it may seem, we were told by the purple men that these mosquitos breed in the septic tanks, not in open water. Thus they are putting insecticide either directly into the septic tank or flushing it down a toilet. It seems to work so they must know what they''re talking about.
-
Hi Itstime - were you staying at the Meldi in 2002 (I think) when "someone" recommended SSS? I remember a lady having a really bad time and I recommended SSS - was that you? If it was I remember you spent a fortune on medical bills! - Barbara
-
Hi Barbara
No wasn''t me though I do share the experience of the poor woman you met :( Can only reiterate my previous experiences and my personal endorsement of SSS. as stated before I did really suffer but after finding SSS it has been so much better. In October I was bitten on arrival either at Dalaman or on the journey to Kalkan (restrictions on liquids meant I couldn''t have SSS in my hand baggage to apply on the flight before landing :( ) got bitten on the eye lid and had massive reaction which meant my entire eye was closed and swollen. Applied SSS every evening after and not one bite for the rest of the holiday. I know it works for me but do understand that maybe doesn''t work for everyone.
-
Hi
I also used SSS this year and found it helped. However I think this is being discontinued so you need to stock up now!
-
Hi all
Can anyone tell me the current situation with the dreaded mosie’s. In 2006 we could not go out of an evening with out our mossie protection, but last year in June it was great no SSS needed.
We are returning in September should we bring some mossie protection with us?
Thanks for your help, only two weeks to go!
Cheers
-
I didn''t get bitten once this year when we were in kallan in July. I did spray as always but a couple of our friends never bothered and didn''t get bitten either, have no idea why as usually it''s mozzie central. I did suffer back in May from bites from the dreaded olive flies.
Maybe those in the know can shed some light?
-
I think the town spraying has made a big difference. My daughter and I get bitten easily (my daughter had 42 bites on the first night in 2006!) and badly but neither of us had more than the odd bite this year. We did use mossie spray each night though just to make sure we hedged our bets.
-
not one bite this summer...!! Great! I did use the Avon Skin so soft around my ankles - as much as a moisturiser as a mossie repellent - coz I know the little blighters love ankles >:D but didn''t use any plug in tabs and no other sprays - it was lovely!
Well done to the Belediye or whoever for bringing the mossie problem to practically an end..!! :-*
-
I think the Mozzie situation has greatly improved but I still drench myself in Sinkov and SSS. But I have to agree with Jane, the olive flies in June drove me nuts. Any recommendations for repellants for these horrid blighters.
-
We have just returned from Kalkan and the mozzy situation has improved but i still got a few bites even with spray on they just love me, my husband didn,t get any. Beware of the spray machines they use ,they will not think of people passing by when they spray i don''t think it can be good for you to breath in the chemicals does anyone know what they use ?
I''d like to say am glad to be back but am not, i''d put up with mozzies if it meant i could stay longer :(
-
I read somewhere that taking Vitamin B1 could help, so as my hubby got bitten quite regularly in June, both from Olive flies and the mozzies, he started taking a tablet a day a few weeks ago. We also have mozzies here in the UK and after 2 days while doing some gardening. he got bitten. However, the reaction was much less than previously and since then he hasn''t been bitten at all. It seems to be working for him and hopefully he won''t suffer as much in Kalkan.
-
the olive flies are leaving later..they used to be gone byearly may..now they are hanging around till june...climate change maybe? as for the choking stuff in the mozzie sprayer it contains Benzine :o
-
Loretta
Use Head & Shoulders or any strong medicated shampoo which seems to keep them off
From my head being like small hillocks It was as smooth as a billiard ball this year
-
I shall definitely make a note of that, I really suffered with the little blighters, the last couple of years. Last year there was a couple staying at the Korsan and the young lady was very badly affected by a reaction to this blighters. Her glands swelled and she was suffering from a constant headache as well as the itchy lumps in her scalp. I supplied a couple of antihistimine tablets and they managed to reduce the swellings and get rid of the headache until she could get some from the chemists.
I wonder if Tea Tree oil might work as well?
Joan
-
Where would a couple of mosquitoes get the money to stay at the Korsan?
Two Septembers back, we had a major attack and a mate had over 100 bites (his own fault, opening the window WITHOUT the screening!). I was swatting them in the bathroom, just post shower and it was like a scene from Carrie or All Creatures great and small. The sprays in Turkey seem to be more concentrated than here in the UK. If anyone wants a tip to take away the itch once bitten, I was once told to press your thumbnail across the white part of the bite like a hot cross bun, which apparently breaks up the nasty stuff and allows the bite to go down. You''re welcome!
-
Hi Eniste,
I was talking about the dreaded Olive Flies, (my head has started itching, just thinking about them). Also, my eyesight does not run to identifying the sex of mosquitoes!!!!! LOL
-
OK, happy to add that I only saw a few olive flies during our time in Kalkan in July. Not sure if they were green or black olive flies, but same type couples may be the rage in their circles too! Got a couple of unidentified bites thenwhich were not mozzies, so I guess that explains it!
-
Thanks kevincat, will give it a try. Are the olive flies likely to be there in September?
-
Are there any mosquitos in the winter time ie. Christmas and New Year?
-
luckily I only saw a couple of Donkey Wasps this month.......they still scare me though.....devils insects !!!
-
Olive flies are usually out in May, but for the last couple of years, they have continued to maraud well into June. They hide in the shrubs and seem to come out biting with a vengence in the late afternoon.
-
No mosquitos or fruit flies in the winter
-
No mosquitos or fruit flies in the winter
No, but you do get builders!
-
Do the builders bite? ;D
-
No, but they make a lot of noise and mess
-
. . . . . particularly when slapped with a flip flop! :o
-
Hi there,
We was in Kalkan in June and the worst problem for us was those tiny olive flies which bit me more than mossies, especially on the head!
We are back next week but wondering what the wasp situation is like now. My friends daughter is in Olu Deniz and she has been plagued by wasps at the lagoon. Must say in June I saw none...were they still sleeping then? I hate the things.
BarbH
-
I don''t know about wasps but last year in early October we visited Olu Deniz whilst in Kalkan. We drove round the lagoon and intended to eat lunch by it but when we pulled up and got out of the car (twice) it smelled terrible and there were loads of flies so we moved on.
-
Tottally agree Itstime,
You know how smooth and soft Lily''s and mine were this July. No bites in August for our big party of 37 friends. So must have worked!
Thanks for the advice
-
We was in Kalkan this time last year and noticed no wasps and no bites from mossies, but when I heard about Olu Deniz being plaguedwith wasps at the lagoon got meorried.
Strangely I have not seen ONE wasp in my garden this year but last year had a nest in the eaves.
Regading the blue lagoon, I was not impressed at all yet my friend thought it was "paradise"....she is coming with us to Kalan next week then she will see what is paradise!
BarbH
-
Hi BarbH - yes - I know what you mean - we thought the Blue Lagoon was TOTALLY overrated and IMHO not a patch on Patara beach - it makes for lovely aerial views and looks stunning from the air - but in reality - it is not that nice on the ground....sorry gone off topic here... :o :o
-
I first came to Kalkan anout 7 years ago and the mossie amd wasps were quite bad then.
We returned last Sepember and was not bothered with either and also this June, as I said it was the olive flies. We stay at the Meldi Hotel and it has been lovely not to be bothered by these pests. I wonder if Kalkan has tackled the problem with wasps as they do with mossies?
I have been in Icmeler Sept/Oct and wasps have been a nuisance then, we was on a boat trip and the whole day was ruined by wasps swooping down on everyone and this was out at sea! At least with mossies you can get sprays to deter them but those stripey things are not bothered.
Back next week and I do hope I am not speaking toosoon!
BarbH
-
for a small fee i would be willing to smother myself in Jam and run through the streets of kalkan..thus enticing the wasps of the area away ;D ;D
-
it''s more of a "scurry"which i do in a hurry while flailing my arms violently above my head .....especially when wasps are chasing me:D
-
Thanks blue lizard, just hope there''s not a sting in the tail!
BarbH
-
just cover me in lemon curd..think nothing of it!..it''s what friends are for!! :-*
-
 :-*
-
What about wearing black leather and smothering yourself very slowly in olive oil?
See Oil Wrestling thread
-
Joan!! didn''t know you had a dark side!! do i get to wear a leather hat?still whatever floats your boat!! i was offering to get rid of wasps not olive flies!! :o
p.s i thought the chippendales was a chip shop on the yorkshire moors :D
-
Dear Kalkaners
The Avon cream seems popular. Noted. In case of no supply I am advised the sure way to keep them at bay is to intake the following secret formula. Its black and sticky. You either love it or hate it !
A little of the black stuff on a piece of bread daily should do it.
For more indoor options burn incense.
In India, coils of incense burning slowly on the ground near where people gather are very popular.
:)
-
rumour has it that Avon have stopped selling skin so soft? as for the little jar of love it or hate it?..it''s vitamin B1..available in health food stores etc...and for those who "hate it" is a better option ;)
-
So BL - I deduce from that - that you are NOT a lover of the black yummy stuff - so you won;t be smothering yourself in it in that case....back to Olive Oil for Joan then..! ;) ;) :o
-
my OH always takes the "jar" and vitamin B1..she takes no chances...this coupled with Boots"repel" silver bottle (50% deet)....plus she has me to lure the biters away!! ..Kalkan is loads better than it was since the "busters" have been active.....as for the offer of jam and lemon curd and olive oil....i would be like a trifle runnuing through kalkan :D
-
MARMITE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I think I need a technicolour yawn !
-
Avon Skin So Soft is currently on special offer in Brochure 15 - 150ml for £2 instead of £5!!
-
for those who live in kalkan(i don''t mind sharing this snippet ;D) the Kaya are acting as agents for Avon..or at least they were in june/july.... ;)
-
a little dab of Lal behind each ear? :D
-
hi all
came back from kalkan two weeks ago, i think it has something to do with what you eat, asbeen to turkey for the last five year and never had any problems. that was untill this year.
I can only put it down to eating sea food, sounds silly but i never eat sea food but this year i did, and guess what, yes i got bitten, and so did some three out of the four of us, the only person that did not get bitten was the one that did not eat sea food. just test it out .
-
i don''t eat sea food and i got chomped..!! ::)
-
I swapped to Avon''s SSS this year for the first time and was bitten like mad. After persevering for 4 days I gave up and bought something with deet in it from Yali Supermarket. Yes I know deet is bad for you and the vapour is bordering on unpleasant but I wasn''t bitten again... :)
I''ve done deet (the Boots one same as BL), no perfume and antihistames for two weeks before our trip and for the length of our stay for the last 4 years and I''ve avoided being bitten, so I''m annoyed with myself that I changed my routine this year....just because I wanted to smell nice ::)
Moral of the tale - find out what works for you and stick with it.
-
I hope that this is not the kiss of death, but my wife suffers badly if bitten but has taken to using the OFF cream that you can buy here in Kalkan. Its also acts as a moisturiser and smells quite pleasant (made by Johnsons I think). Touch wood she has not been bitten so far this holiday.
-
Thanks Onesque....think I''ll stick with smelling unpleasant, next year. Good job Mr Kalkan4eva loves me ;D
-
For the first time since I started having holidays abroad, I have returned home without any mozzie bites. I did not need to use any sprays, lotions or portions. Well done to the Kalkan Mozzie Busters, whatever they are doing, it seems to be working.
-
Interesting, this.... I used to get bitten alive, but this year I was fine - at least, all the time we were in our apartment and in the town itself. Two weeks bite free!!
However, on the second to last night of our two week stay we then spent one evening with some friends up the hill a bit - just in front of the Samira Gardens. Result - bitten alive again!
So whatever mossie-removal they are doing in the town, it is not being done further up the hill!
-
You''re absolutely right MartynE. I live just along the road from the Samira Gardens. Some friends came round for drinks on my terrace at about 6.30 on Monday evening. One of them enquired whether there would be any mossies and I confidently replied that I didn''t have a bite on my body and that it had been the best year yet for lack of them. I spoke too soon, the next morning I woke up with numerous bites. I think the authorities must have dropped their spraying campaign too soon.
-
I also think the spraying campaign has ended. Yesterday a chap with a hand sprayer came round to spray our pool, we declined for the moment as we are still swimming but in about two weeks we''ll let him do it.
-
We have an apartment fairly close to the Samira Deluxe and were visited by the "men-in-purple" about 2 weeks ago.
They sprayed around and about and even down the loos and basins inside the apartment.
We too had very few mossie bites this time around and appreciate the work of these fine chaps.
-
They were spraying the town last night. We didn''t have any bites in the last 2 weeks when we were in Kalkan. It is much improved from 3 years ago.
