Hi. Kalkan gets very quiet during those months. Should be perfect for writing a novel :D

I have a friend who has driven it many times. Her preferred route was always UK to Ancona, Northern Italy then ferry to Igoumenitsa, Greece which cut out several painful border crossings through the Balkan territories.

If you are doing it in the R34 though, you'll probably want more driving and less ferry!

We have driven several times to and from southern Spain to Kalkan.  We have taken the ferry both from Ancona (best) and from Venice when the Ancona ferry schedule didn't work.  Many fewer boats in the winter, check the schedules first.  We used Superfast Ferries:  http://www.directferries.co.uk/ancona_ferry.htm (http://www.directferries.co.uk/ancona_ferry.htm)
