Hi Everbody. I have only recently found ‘enjoykalkan.com’. What a great site for all us Kalkan lovers. I hope this does not sound as if I am being disloyal to Kalkan, but can anyone recommend an alternative resort , preferably on the west coast, which would appeal. Since the year 2000 we have visited Kalkan 14 times. I recently fractured my knee, and I think 2 weeks in Kalkan will be a bit too much for our next visit. Instead of staying for 2 weeks next spring, we thought, just for once, of staying for 1 week only and the other in a different area that is not so hilly. We enjoy swimming in the sea and sight seeing by car. We have never stayed anywhere else in Turkey, so any suggestions would be much appreciated

Hi magi - what about Turunc - that has been discussed on this forum as a place many Kalkan lovers like and go and which is similar to kalkan but not as hilly, not so big and in my opinion not so nice - but it will make a nice second week for you...???

How about Yalikavak on the Bodrum peninsula? It maybe to far tho, to do one week in Kalkan and one in Yalikavak.
Its a small village with about 30 restaurants and less than 10 bars but has a very nice atmosphere. Although not as ''English'' as Kalkan - it has more wealthy Turkish and european holiday makers, I still liked it a lot.
Also the Bodrum peninsula is well situated for touring around either in a car or there are lots of domus about.
I prefer Kalkan but I think its a good 2nd choice.

Hi Turkeyfan interesting to hear your comments. My sister has a place in Yalikavak and although I''ve never visited her there or her visit us in Kalkan it would be interesting to know what each thought of the others choice! Hopefully this year we will get to see each other''s place. Charlie

Thanks for your response everybody. Yalikavak sounds interesting, but as you say maybe a bit too far to travel from that area to Kalkan for the second week. A turkish friend from Kalkan suggests either Selimiye or Akyaka. Anyone familiar with either of these places? I''d like to hear more about Turunc. Why do I feel guilty even discussing other destinations apart from Kalkan?

how about Adrasan ? alos named Cavusoy I think, only about 2 hours along the coast from Kalkan, Antalya direction.
It''s very undeveloped, great beach, close to lots of historical sites such as Olympos, Phaselis, Kekova to name a few.
We were there last year for a few days and wished we had one week to enjoy the peace and quiet.

Selimiye is lovely, very small- try the Palmetto hotel, if you go here do have a car for a few days as the Bozburun Peninsula is stunning & good to explore. Turunc is also nice and busier than Selimiye- try the Green Gardens aparts or the Barbaros Hotel- both may be simpler than what you a familiar with, therefore best to do the quieter resort first, then come to Kalkan as otherwise the other place may seem a bit flat. Another suggestion would be Gocek- Yagmur apartments or A&B pension.

Yes I too am a Kalkan lover but have to try new places now and then, Gocek is lovely, flat but has the hills all round greener, has a great yachting Marina, the super swiss beach very posh, or a short boat ride to the island beach, very robinson crusio, and the best part only about 25 min from the airport, just after the tunnel.
Turunc is good again flat with the mountains at the back, small town, but easy boat ride to Icemilar or Marmaris if you can bare it.
Next year we are having a week in Turunc and a week in Akayaka never been to the latter before but we will see, we were going to do Kalkan in between Spring or Autumn however our daughter is getting married so we must save up so sadly we wont get to Kalkan in 08.

What about Dalyan, the resort is flat but still surrounded by mountains and you can either catch a boat taxi or dolmus to the beach. Both Kalkan and Dalyan are served by Dalaman, you could go to Kalkan for the first week, Dalyan second week and then it''s only a short journey back to the airport.

Hi all we are booked for 3 weeks in August. Done Kalkan for the last 4 years and thought we would have a change of scenery we fly into Dalaman but as yet no accommodation sorted but have enquired about Calis about 40 mins from Dalaman and an hours drive to Kalkan which we are planning on doing and stopping over for a few days. Could anyone shed a little light on Calis for us.
We have also looked into Turunc but feel its a little to far to drive (been told 3 to 4 hrs )

mmmm - toffeelad - I think that if you like kalkan and like places like kalkan - then Calis will not be for you - Calis is simply a seafront - a very long seafront just the other side of Fethiye - so it is good for its proximity to Fethiye. However the beach is shingly and not very deep and there is just 1 row of seafront shops/restaurants behind which are the relative high rise hotels and apartments and its very flat around there. I certainly can''t envisage myself spending 3 weeks there or even 1 week to be perfectly honest - on a rating of 1-10 - 1 being Marmaris and 10 being kalkan - I would put Calis about 3..!!
I would certainly consider turunc - if you want scenery and interesting places - turunc is only 2 hours drive from Dalaman - we did that drive this summer - certainly no way is it 3-4 hours.. Only trouble is - is that it is a very twisty turny road from marmaris and you really have to go through marmaris to get to most places...... However that peninsular is very pretty and the place more like kalkan!

I have never been to Calis beach but when we stayed in Overcik I asked our taxi driver what it was like fancying stopping there sometimes, he said horrible flat built on swamp land and lots of Mozzies. Dont know if it is true but he had nothing to gain or loose by not recommending it. Turunc is only as far away as Kalkan or what about Gocek very pretty.

We have been there to look around, as stated very flat, lots of building of villas and aparts these all built on reclaimed land. Didn''t think it was very pretty or even attractive and a little (getting larger) Britian. Oh yes the mozzies, very true.

:) Hi Magi, Our personal recommendation would be Icmeler, it is nice and flat and so, easy walking for getting about. If you want to visit Turunc then you''''ve got two options of getting there, either by Dolmus or Water Taxi. The road between Icmeler and Turunc is a little twisty but you certainly get some fantastic views. As for your knee, now i''''ve read that you''''ve fractured it but to help with the healing process, have you considered seeing an accupuncturist ?? About three years ago my left knee kept letting me down and so I had three sessions and i''''ve not had any problems since. In fact, one month after my last treatment we went to Santorini whereby we did a lot of walking including going up a volcano and negotiating the steps down to Thira harbour and walking up to the old ruined city. By the time you read this I hope you will have had a great christmas. :)

Hi Charlie, We went to Santorini a few years ago. We have been to several Greek Islands and have always enjoyed ourselves. However, this is the only Greek Island that I would not like to return to. We stayed at Perrisa and it was not a particularly attractive resort and we found that nearly all the businesses were owned by "outside" business people as opposed to locals. As a result, they did not come across as being particularly friendly, but decidedly grasping. Thira and the resorts on that coast, are very commercialised and expensive. The sunsets for which Santorina is famous are no more special than anywhere else on the Med. and in my opinion the best sunsets are the ones on the island of Kalymnos looking out to the smaller island of Telendos. Hope this is of some use to you.

Charlie, we loved Santorini. Our main reason for visiting this island is the fact that my wife is a culture vulture and so in addition to what i mentioned earlier, we also visited the ruins at Akrotiri. Oia is well worth a visit as this is where most of the pictures featured on most greek postcards were taken, the windmills, the typical greek houses and of course the cats. I would personally recommend you look at Smaragdi Village Hotel if you are thinking of going there.

Thanks Cruiscontroller for leaving a message for me. I haven''t visited the site for a while, but now that we''ve actually booked a flight and know I''m back. After much surfing, we have decided to stay the first 4 days in Akyaka before motoring to Kalkan for the last 10 days - couldn''t wrench ourselves away from Kalkan for longer. Quite a few of you suggested Gocek. We stayed in Gocek once; we''d booked for 4 nights I think, but found it so very quiet we left after 2 nights. The town was absolutely deserted in the evenings. We did not strike up a conversation with any other holidaymakers, unlike Kalkan, where you meet and chat to people all the time. Maybe it was too early in the season. I''m having problems finding a hotel in Akyaka, can anybody help?

Contact Mepar tours- www.mepartours.com- they are based in Akyaka and Erhan & Zeynep speak good English and have been working in the area for years- they can give you some up to date accommodation info. I hope that helps

Hi all,
Can anyone suggest a Kalkan alternative for a honeymoon? We are getting married in Kalkan and really like the look of Cirali but it might be impractical as our return flight is from Dalaman :( Somewhere quiet, and relaxed with good snorkelling would be ideal.
Any help appreciated :)

Hi Mangman - cirali is a wonderful choice for a honeymoon - very relaxed unspoilt and undeveloped. I can recommend the Hotel Canada - run by Carrie and Saban http://www.canadahotel.net/en/index.htm - not sure about the snorkelling - but bound to be available there - you could ask Carrie (a canadian). I did the drive from kalkan to there in just under 2 hours - so it will make a long transfer but do-able I would say!!

There was an interesting article on Turkey by Amanda Platel in the Daily Mail Yesterday. In it she mentions a resort called Assos. I was wondering if anyone else had visited this part of Turkey and if so what they thought of it.
