Title: Wild Boar
Post by: Will on September 19, 2010, 03:31:46 PM
This is an unusual one and I am hoping for a response from anyone  on EK who is from a Turkish family with past experience of the same problem.

We live just outside Kalkan, off the Bezirgan Road, surrounded by fields and few other houses.   Every night for the past three weeks, our dogs (who are kept inside all night) have barked incessantly for several hours because we are being visited in the small hours by up to a dozen wild boar .

They root around just outside our house, and stay for hours.  We have rigged up security lights to try and frighten them, but they have no impact.  we go outside (behind the gate because some of the boar are BIG) and bang pans and throw stones, they run away for ten minutes, then come back for more hours of frollicking.

A friend came up with the great idea of a bird scarer but we can't find one and in any case suspect the sound of gunshots will send the dogs into an even greater frenzy.

We don't want them shot as they have as much right to life as we do but we are desperate for a decent nights sleep.  Any suggestions please as to how we can deter them.

one remedy is to place lots of your old fruit and vegatables in a place away from your house...where the boar can come and eat as they want to without being disturbed...
The alternative is to use this feeding ground as a lure to shoot one of them for the pot..as my turkish friend does..and share it with your english friends...
This will then deter the others from coming to your area again..Wild Boar makes great pies and casseroles...that is of course if you are not vegetarian..good luck with your quest..it will be interesting to find out what you choose to try...?
