Title: You simply must eat at Begonvil!
Post by: JEL on July 31, 2010, 05:23:26 PM
We have just come back from our first holiday in Kalkan. During our stay we ate at several places and all were very good. But, here are our favourites:

Chillie's which is on kalamar road is very good. They have friendly staff, with a Robson Green look alike for a waiter. Exceptional food, yet one of the cheapest we found. Can highly recommend their 'sizzling iron plate' dishes (chicken, lamb or liver), it is cooked with tomatoes, peppers and spices, It's served in an iron wok, which is left heated at your table. Also they have free puffy bread with crumbly cheese, simply to die for.

Our other favourite is very traditional turkish and is often overlooked. This is Begonvil cafe opersite abi tours in the alleyway next to mousaka. Small family run and cheap, excellent food cooked on a BBQ. Seabass and seabream are fantastic, also the prawn kebab. They don't have an extensive menu, but this is probably why it is so good. If you order a day in advance they will do a pitcher (cooked in a clay pot that is broken at your table), this not only a great experience, but it tastes lovely too.  Staff very friendly and not at all pushy, unlike many restaurants in kalkan. You get a great interaction with the staff and locals. You will be swamped with free meze, bread, cheese and all sorts. Despite it often seen to be empty, this place simply made our holiday.

Missing these places already!! ;D

Hi
We had lunch at Begonvil in June and were very disappointed. For us, it was a case of quantity over quality and we thought the prices were steep considering you were sat in the alleyway. In fact, the prices were about the same as Mussaka next door which is much better quality and nicer surroundings too as well as good staff. Maybe we got them on an off day, you never know.

KM - sorry to hear you didn't enjoy, we have been using the Begonvil for 2-3yrs now & always found them well priced compared with others & food excellent, the locals use it all the time.  They do have a new chef this year as the the previous one is now doing his national service, hence the changes we think re the bbq & tables at the top for evening meals.  Lets hope you just had an "off day".
