As mentioned on another thread, you pay a very high commission on travellers cheques.  Almost nobody uses them these days because of this.  There are plenty of ATM's here which take all major cards and you can change sterling at very good rates, commission free in many of the shops.  Banks and post office charge a small commission.

Do not change money on arrival at the airport the rate is very poor, wait until you get to Kalkan.

thank you for the reply, just a bit worried about keeping lots of sterling in room safe, which is why we thought we would take some of both.

Unfortunately they won't have time to open an account with one of the banks that don't charge for ATM withdrawrals.
We always take a combination of sterling and use ATM's. Somewhere there is a thread about those cards that you can pre-load with money before you leave UK - not sure whether the outcome was that they are a good option. Try the search facility, or looking through the threads in money and finance. Good luck

I've always taken travellers cheques (13 yrs) and found no problem in exchanging them (except the PTT who stopped taking them about 5 years ago).

However this year I've decided to try out the pre-payment card with Travelex.

There are two versions both called a "cash passport" but if you go for the one with "globe" in the name you get charged for using it -apparently better if you are a frequent traveller (when you choose the currency you want the card in it gives you a long list which includes "GB pound globe" and "GB Pound" - also don't choose TL as you will be charged commission each time you use it - this was told to me by a Travelex lady when I phoned them confused before I ordered it)!

If you go for a normal one and load it with Sterling you only have to pay commission at 2% whenever you load it with money and it is then free to use at all ATMs with no extra charges - you do get charged if you use it like a credit card to pay over a counter or in a restaurant however.

I applied for it online and  it arrived in the post 3 days later.

It's a visa electron card and have been told that all ATMs should accept it - Kalkan is awash with banks now so hopefully at least one will - if not I'll be stuck using my credit card all holiday which will be expensive!
