Market round up?
hello all
visiting for a week in October, and read about some of the markets around and about.
it's all a bit confusing though - what would really help is a kind of 'market round up' so that myself and other newbies could understand which market sells what, what days they are on and where, what those on the know think about the best buys / most fun to be had and how to go about getting the best deals!
have posted in the other 'things to do' forum area but no luck yet ...
if any one caousl help that would be really kind,

Fethiye market is the biggest and best market in the area. It happens every tuesday.
While you're in fethiye you can visit migros, a decent sized supermarket, (bigger than anything in kalkan) popular with the ex-pats living in kalkan.

We've only ever bothered with the weekly Kalkan market - on Thursdays. If you only have a week I wouldn't bother going further afield just to look at the same stuff you can find in Kalkan! Other forum posts indicate that all the markets are more or less the same - just some are bigger than others! The Kalkan market is great fun: the fresh fruit & veg is beyond fabulous and the choice of herbs/spices to choose from mind blowing; you can get clothing - but I always think the men do better than the women, as I find the women's clothing too "blingy" for my taste! Shoes ditto - the men's shoes are great with good selection - my partner always buys 2 or 3 pairs from the first stall on the left as you go in, but the women's shoes are tacky - ho hum! You can buy pashminas, tablecloths, throws, belts, wallets/purses, handbags (but not close to the standard of BSG in the village - cheaper tho'!). If you so feel inclined you can get pots and pans and electrical goods too! Watch out for the lemon spritze man!

Oh, forgot, you mentioned good herbs and spices ...
are there any restrictions on bringing them back to the uk?
(apart from weight, of course!)

I've been to Kalkan, Kas and Fethiye markets and all sell very similar stuff and at similar prices. Fethiye market is absolutely huge - you have to be extremely dedicated to see the whole thing, I couldn't manage it! There's a lot of repetition with stalls selling identical produce so although it's enormous you don't necessarily get all that much more choice. It gets very hot and sticky under the canvas but there are some nice eating places to stop and have a cold drink and a rest. The Fethiye trip is a nice day out but if you're only there for a week I probably would just do Kalkan market. Kalkan market is bigger than you might expect given the size of the town and is good for souvenirs such as lanterns, table runners, cushions and costume jewellery. The fruit and veg selection and quality is amazing. Kas market is similar but seems to have a larger fruit and veg section.

Re the herbs and spices...not aware of any restrictions. However - make sure the spices are wrapped very very well and separately, otherwise your saffron will taste like chilli and your clothes will smell...interesting ;)
