Title: Where to stay,please help!!!
Post by: mwhittles on September 11, 2009, 06:50:13 AM
Hi im new to the Kalkan area as we normally stay in the Fethiye region but have seen it become too British and fancy a change to rediscover the real Turkey for next year. Kalkan got recommended to myself by a waiter,he told us that its more traditional turkish than Olu deniz etc which has sadly become a really tacky touristy place in recent years. I'd appreciate any info, like is the center near the beach or half way in and is it accessable in all areas with a buggy? also is it more expensive than the Fethiye region with it being a more exclusive place? And finally i'd welcome advice on where to stay with my wife and our 13 and 3 year old daughters, any advice would be greatly appreciated thankyou. ;D

Hi,
Kalkan will be a bit more expensive but you can eat and drink to suit your pocket. With the buggy, unless you are going to hire a car, you might be best to stay close to the main strip. You are spoilt for choice for accomodation and to help you would need to decide on what type you require. Tripadvisor has a list of top rated accomodation. If you could narrow your search down and come back to the site?

Kalkan is more expensive than Fethiye, the "posh" restaurants down by the harbour are very expensive compared to other resorts, as Roxie said there are little cheaper places you can find on the outskirts of the centre which in my opinion are much better than the "posh" ones & are much more authentic Turkish cuisine, you will find that drinks are more expensive too.

Kalkan is probably more commercialised than you think, a few English breakfast places, sticky toffee pudding etc but it's not too bad at the minute, still fairly Turkish.

Also Kalkan is very hilly so in some places you may struggle with a buggy, definitely recommend staying near the town centre, the Samira Hotel is a good location & there are some very nice apartments in the old town if you go on owners direct website you can find them, also there is not a decent beach, just a small pebbly one but the sea is nice, lovely beaches 10 minutes drive either side of Kalkan though, Patara and Kaputas.

Just to add, Kalkan is a small, relaxed village, it's so laid back, the people are the friendliest you will ever meet, it's beautiful and the food is scrummy, once you have been you will always want to come back!!

Not sure you will get the buggy down the steps to Kaputas :)

kalkan beach is great for young kids on a calm day, easy to reach with lots of nearby restaurants and cafes for when you get hungry. also behinf the beach is the best play ground in kalkan so your young daughter may enjoy playing there as well as on the beach. dont write off kaputas, a fairly agile 3 year old should be able to do the steps to the beach as long as you take your time! leave the buggy home that day.

Thanks very much for all your advice on things, i really love the look of Kalkan and probably will give all the beaches a go, seeing as we are the type to jump on a dolmus and explore.
