Title: TV Packages in Kalkan
Post by: kevincat99 on July 06, 2009, 06:39:46 PM
Does anyone have any experience of buying TV packages here
Kalkan Electric seems to be offering one with UK channels - films etc which need 2 dishes and costs 1425TL [expensive or what??]- does anyone have any idea what it is and does it work
They also apparently have two others ??
Currently Digiturk, for what one pays does not seem value for money , now that Hallmark has gone and they are starting to show the main films in Turkish!!
Hotbird used to be good now most of the English stuff is scrambled
Any ideas anyone on what''s good

Hi Kevincat

We have just had the expensive package installed after having Digiturk for a year.  Basically you will get English channels and premiership games.  I personally don''t watch tv while I''m on holiday, but my husband, doesnt like too much sun, so he will watch the tv and thinks that it was a good investment.

Can you buy a Freesat Box and use it in Turkey? This now gives 140 channels and is only a one of cost of around £75.00 plus installation

KC you do know if you press the 'language' button on your Digiturk remote it changes the language to English?  If you press 'text' you can have the subtitles too - in English or Turkish.

SB only on certain channels as far as I am aware [and we have had it for some 4 years now ]- but they have now started to show some of the films originally made in English just in Turkish
It just seems the quality of what they offer has declined  :(

I should be so grateful if you could explain what a SlingBox is and how much it costs, Kalamar Dream.  I have absolutely no idea but it sounds like a handbag.  I too am totally fed up with how little Digiturk has to offer.

Ive been looking into the world of SlingBox (you will see a post about it in the living in Kalkan area)

Now ive done some more research a better option may be using internet video streaming (sky player, iplayer, 4od) etc

I also found this link http://www.uktv2c.com/ (http://www.uktv2c.com/) but sure there will be cheaper places or ways of doing it.

Now ive looked into it more it looks like the box is just a pc in a small form factor case.

If thats the deal I think the best bet would be a mac mini connected to a decent monitor with a slingbox

There is a thread here - http://www.slingcommunity.com/forum/thread/24725/Mac-Mini---gt--Slingbox/

I tried out uktelly and it seems almost too good to be true. 149 euros a year. I have only tried out the free download trial version. Used a lap top but played it through my tv. While I do not watch much tv this seems like a good option especially in winter.

I too have tried out the free trial of UKtelly and think it's great.  I've been glued to the computer all day catching up with my favourite soaps.  It's certainly enough for someone like me who only has terrestial channels in the uk anyway.  Another bonus is that it costs less than Digiturk.

I should be grateful if 'howmad' could let me know whether I can buy the connection thingy in Kalkan that allows you to watch the programmes on tv.

Has anyone tried DSmart? It's similar to Digiturk but more channels and films You can get the films and programmes in their original language. There's no dishes to instal and I believe it's just a one-off payment.

Its just an ordinary monitor cable. It plugs into the TV and the other end plugs into the lap top. I,ve not bought one in Kalkan but either Baris next to Bezrigan kitchen or the computer shop on Kalamar road should have them, or be able to get hold of them.Just google monitor cables on images and you will see what one looks like.

I discovered this a few months ago and it works really well, can stream live BBC plus BBCiplayer and 4OD on your PC or you can set up your PC to view on your TV with the right cables etc.  Very reasonable price too only £5 per month.
