Title: olive flies
Post by: belinda on May 24, 2009, 09:36:46 AM
These pesky blighters are late in coming this year, and we thought they weren''t coming at all as we hadn''t been bitten at all since our arrival, but now all that rain is stopped,  here they are!! We were gorged on last evening and our heads are now covered in those pustules.
So now for those who suffer these things, they usually hang around for about 6 weeks.
Antihistimine helps.

I got bitten to death, the things are so nasty and horrible. My feet look all sore and lumpy. I''d rather have the mosquitoes as at least they don''t usually seem to bite me!

Hiya Belinda,as far as I know just the normal one, blue label, just a thought,if h/s stops the olive flies biting your head, has anyone tried using it as shower gel, would it stop you getting chewed on any where else ?
someone out in Kalkan now give it a go,and let us know please.  ;D 8)

Apart from this new tip what do you normally use for these flies apart from a good swatting and what do the awful things look like anything like a mossie? Oh and on the subject of mossies if I run out of repellent what''s the best one to buy out there, the one I bought last year here and took over was called Jungle formula I think with deet and we used a plug-in repellent in the villa. Any other tips? We''ve used SSS but wasn''t sure if vitamin B1 would work. Had a few bites but I developed a nasty really sore rash all up the underside of my arm after going in the pool, made me feel ill for days, not sure if it was some sort of insect bite it literally came out in minutes and it didn''t heal for weeks . Anyone had anything similar  ???? Sorry to divert from the subject!

Mozzie stuff you get in kalkan is called "Sin KoV" it''s fine...olive flies are little black blighters the size of a pin head..only tiny but bloody annoying!!..your rash sounds like prickly heat.... ;)

Got my H&S in Wilkinsons today to take out with me, on offer at £1. According to my daughter-in-law one of the ingredients in it helps heal skin irritation but also some insects don''t like it so are repulsed, obviously applies to olive flies.

it must be a better idea to wash your hair in Head and Shoulders over the bath then get in and soak in the water?that way your body would absorb more H&S than standing up in the shower?..those pesky little blighters don''t just bite your head!!..... ;) 8)

Just got back from a week in Kalkan and, thanks to the advice on this forum, I managed to survive with only a couple of bites - unlike last year when I was eaten alive! The Head & Shoulders, Avon SSS and anti-histamine treatments worked wonders.
