Title: Cleaning your water reserve tanks

For those owners who have reserve water tanks, whether built under or near the house by the builder or bought as separate tanks, you should be aware that these fill with mud (and the built-in ones also fill with snails).  They should be emptied, brushed and thoroughly cleaned inside at least every 2-3 years.  Otherwise you are showering in muddy, possibly snail infected water.

Having cleaned out one of each type recently, a friend said both were quite disgusting inside after 5 years of never having been cleaned.

What about roof storage tanks - we have big metal ones....presumably they will be OK and shouldnt be full of rust (or snails or mud.... :o :o) - anyone have any experience of these and if they need cleaning out (not sure how you would get in them mind you...) do they go mildewy and green - I havent looked - there is only a small inspection bit....

Any experiences anybody..??

Felicity, they may well be full of mud because the water coming from Saklikent is full of mud.  Over time it accumulates in any metal or plastic tank.  But snails no.  Only the in ground tanks will have snails ... by the hundreds if not thousands!

The metal tanks usually have an outlet point on the bottom of the tank.  You need two people to empty them, then tip the tank while flushing it out with high pressure from the top entry point and let is run down.  However, if it is on your roof, this might be problematic.

The green you see is probably algae.  Another lovely feature of the water coming from Saklikent.

Thanks for that advice Cosetta - I think I will leave that job now until the winter to have a good look at those water tanks...I dont like the idea of them being half full with mud (or algae!) so I must take a look!
