If you have a missal, you can hold your own services. Otherwise you need to go to Antalya.

Not in Kalkan, the church was turned into another mosque

There has not been a christian place of worship for over 80 years in Kalkan. During the period of population exchange, when Kalkan''s Greek orthodox community left the village, the church was converted into a mosque, just as in Greece, when the Turkish, Islamic population left, many mosques became churches or fell into disuse.

The nearest place where there is a Christian community is Meis, where there are two Greek orthodox churches.

There are Christian services in Antalya but that is a three and a half hour drive from Kalkan.

Although Turkey is secular, it is an Islamic country and there are not many Christian places of worship outside the major cities.

This is just a thought and I don''t know if it is correct.

There must be a Christian Church on the Greek Island of Meis which is just off the coast from Kas.

It would involve a day trip to go there though, but this would be the closest.

Do you know how to get to Meis - how long it would take from Kalkan? Could be the answer for Christmas in Kalkan.

Meis is a Greek Island and its population is Greek Orthodox. In the Orthodox church, Christmas is celebrated on January 6.

So if you are prepared to delay your Christmas celebrations by a couple of weeks, you could travel to Meis.  To get there, you first need to travel to Kas, approximately a half hour journey by road (there is a regular bus service from Kalkan).

You need to be at the harbour in Kas by 9 a.m. to book your sea crossing to Meis. You have to leave your passport with the boat captain who deals with all the formalities and returns your passport to you at the end of the return journey.

The crossing takes about half an hour and the boat will depart between 10 and 10.30.  The fare per person is between 30 and 40 lira depending which boat you travel on.

In winter, when very little is open in Meis, the boats usually return to Kas about 1 p.m. because most of those making the journey go to renew their visa and do not want to linger.

If you wanted to stay longer, you would need to negotiate with the boat captain -  3.30 p.m. is about the latest they return to Kas.

I doubt that there would be enough time to fit in a church service, as Orthodox Christmas services last for a couple of hours.
