We''re always out there for the first 10 days of May. The daytime temperatures have been lovely, hot and sunny but not so hot you can''t get around. We have had the odd cloudy day or a bit of rain for a short time but then the sun comes out and dries it up quickly. In the evening you need a sweater if you are sitting out. Everywhere has opened for the season and staff are fresh and have time to talk to you.

Thanks everyone for the info,I am in kalkan on the 15 may,but I am thinking about the first week in may
with my wife and she likes the sun. 8)

...those Olive flies were awful last year.....if you''re going in early May make sure you stock up on repellant..and Pashminas for Mrs Fid for the evenings in Pasha bar ;) ;)
-
nothing seems to stop the little blighters..how can something so small have such big gnashers!! :o
-
Someone recommended using Tea Tree as a repellent against these vicious blighters. I will be trying it this when we are out there.
-
Use a good strong medicated shampoo - such as Head & Shoulders - no problems :D
-
...and if you have no hair...?
-
Dip your bobble hat in Head and Shoulders ;D
-
I was in kalkan 18 may last year and didnt have a problem with the olive bugs, they were hanging around
the mozzy screen in the bathroom but I didnt get bit ( It may have been all the Efes and Raki consumed.
the weather was really good, and it was pretty warm at night,I remember watching the champions league
final at Pasha bar in shorts and T shirt and I was fine .
I just wanted to know if the sun was shining at the start of may and thanks to all your feedback all looks
good,thank you all. 8) >:D

Hi all,
Memories of 1st week in May last year. Hailstones in the middle of the bay in Ali''s boat, Anil. Came up out of nothing, so be prepared. Needed jumpers at night. No flies or midges. Good time of the year to sitesee. Going for 2 weeks this time.
Bye R.

By all accounts these Olive flies sound horrendous.
They feed by burrowing under the skin, usually in the scalp
This results in large itchy septic lumps
Apparently much worse than a mosquito bite
Nothing can be applied as the hair stops this, antihistamine can help
Head and Shoulders works for some people but not for everyone
And they are around for six or seven weeks from the beginning of May!!!!
I had no idea about these things until I read it on here and made my own enquiries
Not sure that I''ll be risking my head this May and June.

Are these nasty little critters around during the day/night or all the time ? ???
-
we found the worst time is daytime..but some people are more tasty than others, thats why some don''t get munched...they are only about the size of a pin head! we stayed along kalamar road about 6 years ago and they were rife!!things do seem to have got better...
-
Yes definitely worse in the daytime....it''s like shift work. The Olive flies clock off at dusk and the mozzies take over. I was bitten loads last year, but I think switching from good old nasty Deet to Avon Skin So Soft was my real downfall. I smelt nice, I slipped over in the bathroom a few times, I wasn''t using anything awash with nasty chemicals, but boy was I attacked >:( >:(
Stock up on the repellents, Neil - Mrs Fid will thank you for it, even if you seem unscathed ;D
-
i smell and still get eaten...i also have no friends ;D ;D
-
Hiya K4E,Mrs fid never seems to get bitten by anything, every country we have been to its me who seems to get munched, but In kalkan I seem to get away with only a couple of bites which dont last to long and dont cause a problem, maybe because I feel so comfortable in kalkan the beasties leave me alone.
(or is it the Raki and Efes ? )
neil. ;D 8) >:D.

Someone told me it was all down to blood groups..and the amount of sugar in your system that determines your attraction to biting insects....it could well be the Efes that protects you, Neil. My BH drinks his body weight in it whilst we''re away and always comes home unscathed (but in need of a detox ;D)
Yes I know....we need to stay on topic :P
