Title: Ilban Restaurant
Post by: Annie on September 06, 2008, 08:41:21 PM
Just got back from first time in Kalkan.  We only ate at 3 places, Sun Terrace (good value, 12.50 a head for set menu) Ali Babas (this looked like a greasy spoon joint, but actually was ok and no dodgy stomach after). Best by far was Ilban - on opposite side to Yali supermarket, just about the last restaurant on the right hand side coming up the hill.  Very clean, brilliant service from very young waiters and the owners were not ''in your face'', (meant in the nicest possible way) which never having been to Kalkan before, took some getting used to, (found it difficult at first to keep saying no thankyou when asked to look at yet another menu). The part English owner makes gorgeous home made cakes which are served in the downstairs cafe during the day. Ask for them at night, as they do not appear on the menu.  We also were given a free appetiser, large fruit platter and amaretto. Hope this helps any newbies, as the choice can be overwhelming.

Hi Annie, glad you enjoyed the Ilban. How was the rest of your holiday? Always interested to hear the views of a Kalkan newcomer

Felicity
You go down the hill from the Moonlight towards Daphnes, and it is the first restaurant on your left. It is over a small bar. (Or it was last time we went!!)

Hi Felicity,
Yes I''m sure we looked down over the Flamingo Bar and as you look out onto the street from the terrace of the restaurant, the Moonlight Bar is up the hill to the right, but only a short distance.
Kalkan was lovely, but it did take a little getting used to, as I stated before.  However, I felt very safe and infact if ever I was to holiday alone, then I would certainly feel comfortable coming here.  The only downside was the transfer back to the airport.  The driver most certainly had not showered in what smelt like weeks and he was texting whilst driving!  Other than that, no complaints at all.
Just want to say a big thank you to all who have answered my questions over the last year.  I shall still log on from time to time to see whats happening.

The Sun Terrace is really good. Their steak was lovely (well it was when we were out in June). It always seems a bit quiet in there though. Shame because it''s good value.

is the sun terrace the one up the huge flight of stairs next to the post office? if it is then we ate there in July. Food was lovely but only two other people in that night. If it''s not the sun terrace then does anyone know the name of this one.

Hi

Ilban use to be near the taxi rank, next to the pancake place, and opposite Tomato. I always had a good meal there, and went back many times. It had lovely views and a different vegetarian menu than other restaurants in Kalkan.

I am not sure their new place has good views. Perhaps someone can enlighten me?

The Doyem is before the post office.  the one I''m meaning is past the post office (going down towards the town). It''s new this year up above the barbers and the little stall selling souvenirs and napkins/textiles. A huge climb to get up to it. Drat wish I could remember the name  ???

Just to put all in the picture re. the location of Ilban.  It is next door but one (going uphill) from Kaya - think I have got the name correct (they do the magic etc there).  Cafe downstairs, open day times.  Terrace at night (look up the you will see cream curtains which appear to be floating in mid air) very clean and minimalistic looking. Enjoy
Unfortunately the Johnny Depp lookalike does not have any connections to this place (can''t think for one moment why I remember him in a sea of faces!)  Sun Terrace does not stand out, we were drawn by the price and needed food on our first night - quickly.  Food was good but place not busy. Worth a try but if it''s atmosphere and other people surrounding you, then maybe not a good choice. Kalkan - so many restaurants, so little time!

New Ilban''s fish casserole as good as ever, but the view not. Good tea and cakes downstairs in the afternoon for people watching. Dread to think what will be allowed on the old Ilban site - could change the character of the entrance to the old town for the worse.

I agree the food and service at the New Ilban is excellant, there is not the same seaview as the old Ilban but a fantastic back drop view of the mountains, especially when the sun goes down and the moon appears over the top. This restauarant is not on the main drag, but is well worth seeking out. One of the owners has an English wife who ensures that you enjoy your evening from the moment you arrive to the time you leave.Oh and not to forget to mention the gorgeous cakes that she makes for the daytime Cafe!
