Title: 'Foreign buyers not hurting tourism'
Post by: Cosetta on August 12, 2008, 11:25:26 AM
Here is an interesting article about a hot topic: is tourism declining because foreigners buy property then rent it out?  You will hear this argument frequently from Turkish hotel and pansyon owners.

''Some argue, however, that foreign property owners are eroding the tourism industry by renting out their properties to holidaymakers and not paying tax on the rental income. While most in the region condemn the illegal avoidance of tax, there are many in the tourism sector who reject the argument that foreign property owners are causing ailing profit margins.''

Hotel owners have been some of the most prolific property developers in Kalkan e.g. Aslan at the Asfiya whose property company has built villas and converted the Mina into apartments. Can''t then complain if their hotels are suffering. Be interesting also to know the average number of days a week villa users eat out at restaurants compared to someone staying B&B in a hotel. Nor do the developers seem to be sensitive to the harm some of the more recent villas do to the Kalkan landscape and therefore its attractiveness to visitors - what happened to the protected "green" areas that the original Tapestry company used to refer to in their brochure and contributed to their maintenance?
