Title: Which airline.... and 2009!
Post by: Enjoy Kalkan on August 11, 2008, 09:43:25 PM
Hi,

Has anyone booked for 2009 yet? We have just been looking at flights for next year and its working out about £600 for 2 (Manchester > Dalaman)

We have only flown Onur and Thomascook in the past but heard some other airlines fly from Manchester (Monarch I think it was?!) Does anyone know which airlines do fly Manchester > DLM so I can check their websites?

Thanks
Jon

I think First Choice do.  I fly from Birmingham as it''s only a 10 min taxi ride for me but I usually find they are slightly cheaper than Thomas Cook, so they might be cheaper from Manchester too, though I''ve not yet looked at the 2009 prices  :)

John - an alternative suggestion for you. We have started flying from Manchester with Turkish Airlines  to Istanbul then onto Dalaman, it takes a couple of hours longer but as this airline now flies every day to Manchester it means that we can go out on a Saturday flight and come back on a Monday - giving us 3 weekends in Kalkan, and not using up too much precious leave.

Cost this year has been around £310 - but your meals are included, you get free drinks, more luggage allowance than U.K. charter airlines (23 kg I think), and as its a national carrier the planes are modern and you get scheduled seating, plenty of legroom and wider seats.

We are flying out next on the 20/09 and leave Manchester at 11.20, arriving in Dalaman at 20.50, we return on the 06/10 leaving Dalaman at 9.45 and arrive in  Manchester at 15.00.

Ataturk Airport in Istanbul is huge - its a real experience to pass through.

Thanks for the info Ian, something I really fancy doing - a weekend in Istanbul then on to Kalkan.... can I ask how do you get from Istanbul to Kalkan?

Just booked with Monarch tonight, £500 for us both return in May - good flight times also.... ok not the Onur Air £150 return but not bad prices having shopped about :)

John, we have a wait of about 1.5 hours at Istanbul before we catch the internal flight to Kalkan, just long enough to grab a bite to eat and have a wander around the airport. The price I quoted includes both the Manchester - Istanbul flight and the internal flight down to Dalaman, your luggage is checked straight through to the final destination at Manchester. You could easily fit in a couple of days in Istanbul and then travel onto Dalaman.

One thing to remember is that although the flight to Dalaman is an internal one you get bussed to the international terminal at Dalaman as you have to go through customs, for some reason the reverse does not happen on the return journey and you catch the plane at the domestic terminal at Dalaman - you only have to check in then 1 hour before take off.

You should also be able to check in on line for your flights - up to 24 hours before take off.

I know you''ve booked now, Jon, but Freedom Flights and XL also go from Manchester - Monarch don''t fly to Dalaman (or at least they didn''t when I last checked). We''ve booked with Onur for late June 09, £150 each for 18 nights and it was only thanks to this forum. Within days the price had gone up considerably...and we booked before we left for Kalkan this June!!  8)
Great tip off, but I wasn''t so quick getting an October flight  :(

I had just posted that I''ve tried your ''good'' one (.co.uk) but my post seems to have vanished into cyber space!!

I could get returns for 14 days in early may for around £200 per person  (all taxes included) from Gatwick to Dalaman.  Must make up our minds about next year.

Thanks, Neil - am staying at Korsan apartments which we love. Pool not a big issue for us as we are both very keen sea swimmers. Can be found at Kalamar most days - usually in the water by 9am :D Even the taxis won''t deter me!

We have just been looking at flights for next year and there seem to be big changes. We have always flown with Excel from Bristol but they dont seem to be running next year. But.....at last, flights at a reasonable time from Cardiff with Thomas Cook at £350 each in school holidays.

Onur also available via

When I have looked previously Onur''s flights were much cheaper through Aegeanflights than H4U. I think they may have one of thoses ''cookie things'' though as they have always been dearer if I have gone in a second time to look at the same flights, even just a few hours apart.

Jon - we booked BA to Istanbul, return, using Tesco club card points (converted to airmiles) so we only paid taxes and fees (about £100 each return) and then booked an internal flight down with whoever was cheapest.  Have used Onur, Turkish airlines, Pegasus and Atlasjet (from Antalya) - cheapest was about £50..

You should allow min of 2-2.5 hours before transiting in case of flight delays as my OH found out - if you don''t book all the way through with 1 carrier and 1 leg is delayed you won;t get any recompense (he flew Antalya to Istanbul with atlasjet (coz a man had a heart attack on the flight down to Antalya - obviously very sad and unforeseen circumstances - something you just cant legislate against) so he missed his flight and BA were very unhelpful and wouldnt do anything so he ended up booking a flight with Turkish airlines to get back.. >:(  Whereas when we did the same with Onur and then BA 10 days later - we sailed through no problem with loads of time to spare - so all I would say - is just know that you do run a risk booking through multiple carriers!!

Cheers!

Hi Jon - we use Turkish Airlines for both parts of the journey, just in case there are any delays in the Manchester - Istanbul flight, as they would then have to look after us if we were late for the connecting flight. Its also less hassle using 1 airline as they will check your luggage in from Manchester to your final destination - Dalaman.

We are doing the same journey in September and the total cost is £312 per person - we get 16 nights in Kalkan by doing it this way.

I am going to see what the online check in is like this time as they have started this facility allowing you to choose your seat and book in up to 24 hours before departure, there was a dedicated desk for passengers who had checked in on line open last time we went through Manchester and it was empty. We do all bookings on line (just google it for the web site), and its a ticketless process.

They seem a really decent airline, cant find fault with them so far.

Hi there,

I suggest you look at Manchester Airport''s website and that should show you the airlines which fly in and out of there and which days they fly on.  Then do your research, look at the airlines own websites but also look at others such as flydeals.co.uk.  Don''t book too early it will be expensive, likewise if you book too late.  Sometimes by booking through a ''third party'' you can make savings, for example I booked London Gatwick to Dalaman, one leg of the journey is with EasyJet and I get a baggage allowance, if you book directly with EasyJet you have to pay extra for checked baggage.  Happy travelling, Goldie

Hi all,

We are based in the midlands, but this year always seemed to end up driving down to Gatwick to get the best flight prices and a decent selection of alternative dates & times. We will have been out five times this year & only once gone from an airport other than Gatwick, which is Cardiff in two weeks time.

We always used Skyscanner to direct us to the best deals, but going on to their site to sort out our flights for 2009 just now seemed to be hopeless. The indicators show flights for next may & june at approx £175 return by picking the cheapest options, but when you select & go through to the actual details the price ends up as more than double.

Anybody else experienced this?

Tony

Hi again John,

Yes, you are right - although from your reply I thought it was me being stupid, but no, the skyscanner does show the ''increased'' prices in £''s not euros. (wife says that this doesn''t exclude her from still calling me ''stupid boy pike'' for many other reasons)

As you say, once you go through to the actual airline site it all sorts itself out.

I had me worried there, I expected to pay more next year but wow!

Tony
