Post by: Lorretta on July 13, 2008, 11:25:50 AM
Hi all,

Does anyone know what part of Greece it was filmed, it looked beautiful. But then with Colin Firth and Pierce Brosnan as eye candy I probably didn''t pay as much attention as I should have.
have a great holiday jentess.

It was filmed in Skiathos and Skopelos which are 2 small island fairly close to one another and where we are going for a week in September!

Along with Skiathos, Skopelos and Damouchari in Pelion, Mamma Mia was also filmed on location in Corfu...I''m a mine of useless information  :)

Some friends of ours went to Damouchari when they were staying at Agios Ionnis in Pelion a good few years ago and said it was beautiul but quiet in the extreme - it looks like Kalkan might have looked 30 years ago...only smaller..... as it has a natural harbour backed by a mountain - check it out on www.pelion.com.gr

We never got to Pelion as we found Kalkan and couldn''t bear to spend time anywhere else..although our last trip to Greece was to another beautiful place on the mainland - Parga.

The Pelion is stunning - some years ago we stayed in Agios Iannis, a mile or so along the coast from Damouchari, which we walked to several times. Damouchari was very quiet & Agois Iannis a bit livlier but not much.  Small pebbly beaches & amazing broadleaved wooded hills - totally magical but very wet except for July & August.

We went twice to Agios Iannis with Tapestry but they don''t go there anymore, lovely walk to Damouchari very lush vegetation and you can drink the water! there are 3 beaches all pebble.Locals just jump in your rental car if you ask directions and they want a lift most surprising! We have some happy memories of time spent here, but i still think Kalkan has the edge for the old town setting and of course the food ,roof top restaurants and the amount of good jewellery, handbags and cloths shops. Hope to see Mama Mia soon.

Pelion is beautiful but it is a nightmare to get anywhere as the roads are so ''bendy'' round the mountains that you hardly get into 4th gear, you think you are on a straight stretch if you make it to 3rd gear. The place you want to get to might only be a few miles away but it can take ages to get there. I don''t think their cars last long.

She loved it and has decided to have a "Mama Mia" theme for her birthday in October and wants to borrow my Abba''s Greatest Hit CD !!!

Earlier this week I was watching an old ''''Place in the Sun'''' programme and it featured Skiathos and Skopelos.  Looked very beautiful indeed.

Totally agree with you John, I thought I''d had a sense a humor bypass when I went, I couldn''t believe that probably every person in the cinema was in stitches, I didn''t find it funny at all, everyone was singing, clapping & dancing as well, what is the world coming too!!

It wasn''t in Liverpool Kalkan4eva & I''m female so not me, we counted & there was only 5 men in the audience, bet they where bored out their brains  ;D

Each to their own I guess & if we was all the same the world would be a boring place.  ;)

Jon and I went to see it on Tuesday(i dragged him along) and I have to agree with you John. I did enjoy it but think it would have been better watching it at home with a few glasses of wine. It was a feel good movie but not half as funny as everyone in the audience made it out to be.  ::)

OK - my view - i LOVED IT..!!!  but then I would coz - I think it is a fabbo chick flick and the music is cracking....OK - so Pierce Brosnan cannot sing - but he is gorgeous eye candy along with colin firth!!  Julie walters excels in this and Meryl streep is not a bad singer for an actresss..!!  All in all a great film - and one that I will watch again and again....

What I found even more interesting - is that I felt like clapping at the end of some of the songs - a bit like you do in a concert - and then at the end - there was spontaneous applause - now when did you last get that at a film..????!!!

Of course - Im biased - coz I love all those Abba songs - roll on the next 70''s night in Kalkan!!

Cheers!

I have to say I loved the film too but my children were somewhat embarrassed by the three old ladies singing along next to them and even more so by their mother clapping at the end. It was the first film I''d seen for ages that made me feel happy all the way through and helped me start to get over the returning from kalkan blues.
