Title: Strolling in Cappadocia
Post by: chinacat on July 10, 2008, 04:03:39 PM
Snuck into Kalkan for two days then off to Cappadocia. Rented car from Abbi Travel and after 10hr journey, arrived in Urgup to stay in a "cave". Brilliant standards of hospitality and customer woo.Stayed for 4 days and really enjoyed the hot air ballooning.
2 guys acted as guides for the first day and drove us to the most remarkable and unforgettable places.

Well worth taking 4/5 days out of Kalkan.

Hi chinacat,
M and M are arranging a trip here. (see Places to Visit Excursions Section)
Have you any advise on "must see" places etc?

Hi Joan and apologies for not replying earlier.

We felt Urgup to be the ideal base from which to explore the area, especially as it is so close to the Fairy Chimneys and the Goreme National Park. It costs 10YTL per person to enter the Park.
I would suggest you take in the troglodite town at Ortahisar and the area around Cavusin and Aktepe.
Rather than visit the underground city on the outskirts of Nevsehir, we visited the underground "town" in Kaymakli...which was ok.
I have forgotten the name of the place but on the road out of Urgup towards Nevsehir and no more than a 5 minute drive there is a vantage point from which you can witness the most glorious sunset. Costs 3YTL pp to enter the site.
I will post some photos on the Gallery.
We are in Kalkan from 14th Sept and much looking forward to it.

Thanks Chinacat, read your post with interest.
We have made a list of places to visit, and most of them are on your list.
We are all looking forward to going to Cappadocia in November and hope we all enjoy it as much as you did.

Hi MnM - I hope you have a wonderful time in Cappadoccia - we too took 4 days out of Kalkan this summer and drove to Cappadoccia.  Much the same comments as Chinacat - other than we stayed at the Kelebek hotel in Goreme - personally I preferred this place to Urgup - smaller and more intimate and right in the midst of the fairy chimneys.  Nice restaurant there called A la Turca - but to be honest - the food is not half so good as kalkan food - but it is a lot cheaper!!

We also took a hot air balloon ride with Kapadokya balloons - although expensive - it was a once in lifetime trip - and well worth the experience (other than getting up at 4.30 am).  Likewise - I recommend you visit the underground city at Kaymakli, the Goreme open air museum and Uchisar castle and fairy chimneys - an amazing place!  We also went to the Ilhara valley and walked along some of it (too hot in August) - but that is amazing with all the old churches - so well worth the visit and the hike through the valley.  We also visited the wherling dervish show in the caravanserai on the silk road at Saruhan - quite an emotive experience (evening show).

Enjoy!

Well - I would like that mystery solved - coz I have heard turkish people pronounce it differently too..so no wonder us Brits are confused..!!   ???

The 2 pronounciations I have heard is - as John points out - Kap-a-dokia (with a hard K as in Cat/coffee) but also Kap-a-dossia (ie - with the ''c'' pronounced as an ''s'' - soft sound as in see/saw/sad) neither of which concurs with the way Gocek is pronounced...the only possible reason I can see is that the ''c'' in Gocek follows the ''o'' with dots on and therefore is pronounced differently.... :o

Oh for somebody turkish to explain...??!  :-*

Thanks Felicity for your post. Sounds like you had a great time in Cappadocia. (We don''t know the proper pronunciation either)
Always good to get info from someone who has been.
The balloon trip will be a must do.
Thanks again. M n M
