Title: Your favourite Kalkan moment
Post by: Enişte on June 17, 2008, 02:27:58 PM
As British TV now seems to consist solely of 50 best type list shows, I thought we could compile a record of visitors'' and residents'' favourite Kalkan experiences.  Maybe a whole holiday, a day trip, a meal or just a moment that made your holiday special.

I''ll start with a moment last year.  I had been for a beer or two of an afternoon, as one does, and was just preparing to make the steep walk back up to our apartment in Kiziltas.  I was just passing Omar''s Kitchen, when Suleyman, a lovely gentleman with brilliant white hair, called me in.  "You have visited Kalkan many times, my friend, I have seen you in the village" he said.  I explained that I had indeed made many visits and that my wife is Turkish and we chatted for a few minutes, after which I explained that I was expected at home by the "patron".  As I pointed up to where we live, Suleyman called a waiter and said to me "some refreshment for your journey".  A delightful and very welcome gesture and typical of the spirit for which we all love Kalkan.

This was just one, but I can think of many others, including late lifts home from certain nautically named bars by the harbour!  Please post your favourite moments here.  If you have only negative experiences of Kalkan, we sympathise, but please keep them away from this positively themed strand.

Mine''s a bit "Groundhog Day"!!!

It''s that moment when I see my first view of Kalkan Bay as we come in from Dalaman - and it happens every time!!!!

The night my husband proposed to me in the garden of the Yelken Hotel in 1996.  I didn''t know it then, but we were soon to own our own ''Magic View'' in Kalkan, 7 years later!  No regrets (none about the marriage either)!!  :-* ::)

Most definitely the first view of Kalkan, I always seem to let out a sigh and feel completely relaxed in an instant, no matter what time of day or night I arrive. :D

At the start of each holiday, on our first day in Kalkan, sitting outside Utopia bar with a chilled glass (or three) of Efes, Mr B by my side, watching Kalkan life go by, and knowing we have two whole weeks of wonderfulness in front of us...then going to the supermarket with a fuzzy Efes head and buying our food supplies!!!  ;D

My Favourite thing is walking down the street and everyone saying hello, how are you etc, it is lovely to see happy friendly faces everyday, after two weeks in Kalkan it''s depressing coming back to England with all the miserable people that can''t even say thank you!
I also love the food, the sunshine, the sea, the views, everything (expect the dogs!)!!

I with you on that Lougie.
How depressing is it as you are descending to the airport in England and you look out the window to see dark dreary weather  :(
Then you get to passport control and no one even cracks a smile.

I love how everyone is so friendly in Kalkan and smiles and waves when they see you even if you don''t know them. :)

On the penultimate day of our holiday I needed to get some extra cash from the ATM from the AKI bank. I''d only been reading the on screen instructions for half a minute when a man dressed in shirt and tie came out to introduce himself to us as the bank manager. He talked to my son, gave him a kiss on each cheek, and offered me his card, saying "Kalkan is yours. Enjoy". Bit of a contrast to what you''d expect in England!
