Title: Setting up internet on computer in villa
Post by: tigerlion on April 26, 2008, 03:17:09 PM
Hi,

We are going to a villa where the phone line will be set up from May.

Does anyone know if there is anyone who can help us set up our internet whilst there? Maybe a cheap dial up service?

Thanks

Are you there as a visitor or an owner???...coz as a visitor - I''m pretty sure that you won''t be able to do anything and it won''t be worth your while - better just to take your laptop down to the various internet cafes in town and use them wirelessly or plug them - they are quite amenable to that!

If you are the owner - then you need to arrange to have ADSL installed via Turk Telecom and be connected through your telephone line and you pay a monthly fee - we pay 43 ytl per month and the download amount seems fine for us...do a search on this and you will find a thread devoted to this topic!

Cheers!

The previous post contained several factual errors. Yes of course you can access a cheap dial up internet connection if the villa you are staying in has a phone line. You do not have to be an owner. You can buy a one month package for about 30 ytl. There is very little hassle and it can all be done in an hour or so. Obviously you would not be using an ADSL connection unless the villa has that too but if you want e mail access etc rather than downloading major music and films, that will not be a problem. There is a shop which will do all this for you just before Kartin supermarket , the Turkish word for computer is bilgisayo, so look for signs that say that.

Thank you for this useful information, Lantana. We would also very much like to be able to use our computer
whenever we are lucky enough to be staying in our villa and it it is good news that we can!

Here is a link which will take you to the relevant Turktelecom page (in English) http://www.turktelekom.com.tr/webtech/eng_default.asp?sayfa_id=135.

We used this system for months until we had ADSL. It was reliable but like any dial up, quite slow and we mainly used it for e mails. It couldn''t be simpler and is not expensive.

We live here all the time and use two computers every day.  We have the basic ADSL package which is 29 lira per month. This gives us more than enough usage for our needs. We listen to the radio through the internet for several hours each day, spend a couple of hours on e mails and download quite a lot of music. If you are only here on holiday from time to time, even if you want to download films and play a  lot of games, this package will be more than adequate for your needs.
