Another belated hello.

I recently got back from a 3 day visit to Kalkan. We are having quite a bit of work done on our villa over the winter so when I saw that some very cheap flights were on offer I thought I would pop over and have a look at how things were going.

I booked a return with Thomas Cook for £80, 2 days car hire for £26 and 2 nights in the Pirat for 380TL.

When I got to Gatwick carrying what I thought was standard sized carry on luggage I noticed the template being used to check the size of passangers carry on bags was a lot smaller than my suitcase so had a few moments worrying whether I was going to be charged as much for my bag as I had paid for the flight but it got through the check in process ok.

The plane took off on time and landed a few minutes early, which is pretty unusual these days. It was just as well it landed early as it took almost 30 minutes to get out of an almost deserted Dalaman airport owing to there only being two manned passport booths.

I picked up the hire car and after uneventful drive got to Kalkan at around 11:15, checked in and went for a walk oping to find something open but nothing at all so went back to the hotel and had a very early night (Kalkan was 3 hours ahead of the UK).

It was the first time I had stayed at the Pirat and while it is a dated the room was a reasonable size and clean, breakfast was the basic Turkish offering; overall given the price I paid all perfectly acceptable.

The next day was spent seeing the work done so far and sorting out numerous issues with my bank, my accountants and the Turkish tax office, all caused by our joint bank account having initially been set up in my wife's maiden name. By the time this had been sorted it was time to go back to the hotel and get ready to go out for dinner.

I went out at seven into a pretty deserted Kalkan. Only Aubergine and Blue Marlin were open by the harbour but both were empy so I carried on looking the only place that was open and had customrs was a new Turkish place on the roundabout next to Bergizan's bar.

The food I tried, soup and a lamb wrap was excellent and a bit of bargain for 20TL. Next I went to Bergizan's for a couple of beers this was much less of a bargain 22TL (£3.27) for an Effes.

Prices generally were much higher, mayber 50% higher in £s than our last visit in September. It seems like most places had put their prices up to when the TL was almost 9 to the £ and not reduced them as the rate fell back.

The next day I went to look at the market but it obviously was geared towards the locals so after a brief look round went to the Junction cafe opposite the market entrance and has a very good lunc, a pear and blue cheese salad, and a couple of equally good Turkish craft IPA beers. These were 29TL but happy to pay the extra for a really good beer.

In the evening I went to Aubergine as it was the only place with a bit of life and had an ok but nothing special meal, leaving thinking I should have gone back to the Turkish place for better food at a quarter of the price.

The next day it was time to go back to the airport, joining the check in queue I wondered why everyone looked like they were dressed up for Siberian winter, then word was passed back down the queue that they were strictly enforcing the 6kg weigh limit and people started opening their cases and putting on as many of their clothes as they physically could. My bag passed the test at 5.9kg and thankfully no-one noticed that it was oversized.

Then there was a little bit of drama, a couple checked in seperately leaving their bags with the other while the checked in. One of the check in staff noticed this and called them back. They then made a run for it to passport control with the check in staff in hot persuit. They were quick but caught in the passport queue. I didn't see them on the plane so I guess it wan't a bright move to try to avoid paying the excess baggage fee.

The airport was again almost deserted, with only a handful of flights over the day. NB The Lounge was shut, so don't do what I did and put off having lunch thinking I could get something to eat in the Lounge. Prices in the airport are now even worse than they were earlier in the year.

The TC flight back again took off on time and landed into Gatwick around 10 minutes early.

Alantj. ....pleased to say that some of the few bars/restaurants  that are still open have reduced their beer prices,  what you paid at Bezigan was well over priced.  The kebab house you mentioned seems to be doing very well so pleased you enjoyed your meal.

Belated Hallo Goeden Dag!

Just came back from Prague Christmas Markets.

Crowded with foreign tourists even now, only sardines standing places at the astronomical clock at the 35 seconds hourly performance.

Outside of the tourist trap area one still can buy local brewery beer 0.5 litre at 40 CZK = £1.25!

BA standard service, full to the brim with oversized 'cabin' luggage both ways...
