Title: Mosquitos!!!
Post by: Mustafa Raki on April 18, 2008, 05:26:56 PM
Does anyone know if the ''Ghostbusters'' have been around spraying the village to kill the mosquito larva recently?? We will be there soon and last year was so good without the pesky mossies!

Hi

We live in Akbel and have a fairly large Pool we have only been here since January and already have had 2 visits from the Council spraying the pool/outside toilets etc, Apparently they will be round every couple of months which is good.

Good news indeed. Have had some horrendous experiences with Mozzies but so much better last few years. Combination of Skin So Soft, Zin Kov and spraying  :)

A couple of guys were doing the rounds very assiduously the other day in Kalmar - gave them a bottle of cola and a cigarette each - lovely men who said they will be back evey couple of weeks from now
Problems last year were much reduced from previous years so hopefully they are starting as they mean to go on.
But a big problem is villa owners / management companies who let pools collect stagnent water in the winter where the mosquitos breed
So the Belediye are always trying to catch up !!

re: Stagnant Pools which cause mosquitoes.  If people had to get a license for their pool each year and the license could only be renewed when proof of treatment of pool had been shown to Belediye then surely this would help solve mossie problem?  Therefore people who leave their pool stagnant would be fined for this which is only fair as it can''t be much fun living next door to a green mosquito infested pool?

For loads of information and hints on avoiding these pesky creatures, look at the "Dreaded Mosquito Thread" on page 4 of this section  ;)

 Mustafa raki
I lived for several years in Singapore. There, the eradication of mosquitos was taken very seriously as they carried malaria and dengue fever. The mosquito inspection team came into every house and garden every week to spray against mosquitos and there was a very heavy, on the spot fine if they found any standing water. They inspected everywhere, and even if there was a trace of water under a plant pot or in a shower tray, you were fined. All swimming pools had to be licensed and anyone who did not clean their pool was fined $1,000 for the first offence, any subsequent offences resulted in a jail sentence
As you can imagine, mosquito''s were not a problem.

The Kalkan mosquito sprayers are now out every day but as Kevincat 99 says, irresponsible owners and management companies which leave pools  full of stagnant water all winter are largely responsible for the mosquito problems we have here. I would hope that every Enjoy Kalkan villa owner instructs their management company to empty and clean their pool at the end of each season. We all share responsibility for the environment and shouldn''t expect the Belediye to clean up for us if we don''t make an effort as well.

Interesting points about not emptying pools.

We were advised to only partly empty the pool.  I think the reason was that it reduces the stress on the pool walls/tiles - being effectively supported by the water all high season and then relaxed during the off season.

Would be interested in whether others have had different advice.

There seem to be various schools of thought on emptying / not emptying pools
Some poolmen advise that if you do leave water in the pool to give it a light spray of diesel which breaks down the surface tension on the water and does not allow mosquitoes and their eggs to float

a light spray of diesel!! well what a beneficial effect that will have on the environment when the water is drained prior to refilling.  Goodbye plant life in the vicinity of the diesel coated water.

Lantana,

This is quite normal it only takes a couple of teaspoons of oil to cover the surface of a pool, so it has no effect on plants/wildlife.

In fact the Kalkan council already does this, we were there at the end of the season last year and the day after building work had restarted I was in our pool when a couple of council workmen turned up who were spraying all the unemptied villa pools with diesel.

But what about the animals and birds which drink from all the unemptied pools, isn''t it harmful to them?

You really only need to put in a tiny amount, I suppose if you slosh in half a gallon it wouldn''t do animals  any good but I doubt they would want to drink it anyway.

Unless you are in a tent you wont need one, they go around in a truck spraying of an evening so at most you will need a bit of spray for your body and maybe a plug in. For the last 2 years we havent needed anything.

You may not need nets, but like kalkankiwi mossies love me, so a repellent is essential. I use Deet (available from www.nomadtravel.com) or sinkov which you can buy locally. I also reccomend spraying your room / apartment with Raid before you go out in the evening.

Agree with Loretta - just spray the room with Raid before you go out of an evening, and close doors and windows. Also, I have found that the insect repellent wipes from Boots are really effective. Just apply to exposed areas (!) before going out and they stay off you!

Having said that, the mossies haven''t been nearly as bad for the last couple of seasons; I used to get bitten alive, but last year (and earlier this year) there was no problem.

Hi
I was in Kalkan recently, and noticed very few mossie''s!
I just use the spray or cream called OFF! (or something like that) in the evening on my arms and legs, and remain bite free!
