Title: The Secret Kalkan Diary of Lizilu20 - Fun In The Sun!
Post by: Lizilu20 on August 10, 2016, 11:43:57 AM
 Wednesday 10/8/16

Well there's not been too much sun here in Blighty for us up North so I guess were going to have to jump on that plane tomorrow and chase it all the way to Kalkan.  8)

As usual the preparations began in earnest a few days ago and as usual there have been a few hitches. I had a fight with my new epilator and a hidden skin tag and it won, leaving me with an underthigh looking like it had done a few rounds with Mike Tyson and Hannibal Lector. The blood loss was enormous to say it was only a little taggy thing. Oh well, at least it's gone now but I didn't really anticipate performing minor surgery in my bedroom and the bruising is not a good look either.   :o
The washing machine (same one that chewed the smalls up) has been protesting too and point blankly refused to spin my laundry at the weekend so this required an emergency trip to my kind neighbours. I tried again with a few dusters and it sulkily sprang into life so I'm hoping that it was just a glitch and will do a cycle tonight for the final wash before holiday.

I'm feeling a little smug really as unusually for me, all cases are packed and virtually ready to go. We are underweight, well the cases are, can't say the same for me and OH sadly  :( and that's before all the delicious indulgencies we know we will enjoy and then regret in the same breath  :D and we are planning a meal out with our girls tonight instead of the usual frantic and frenzied final preparations.  :)

There will be 3 of us again this summer so it's going to be hard to say goodbye to the girls left behind but at least we know that Charlie the crazy hound will be indulged too while we are away, rather than him having to be packed off to the Kennels. I used to hate having to do that and always made OH do the dirty. I swear he knows when we make that right turn as he becomes like a rabid dog faced with a dish of water and leaps around the car like a tazmanian devil which is really not like him at all. Anyway I digress.

So, just a meeting to attend this afternoon and that's me done and the holidays will begin.

Fun in the sun - here we come!!!  :) :) :)

Friday 12/08/16

We arrived late last night after a good start to our holiday which involved enjoying our freebie dragon pass in the airport lounge and making lots of indulgent purchases at the airport  thanks to me. Unbeknown to OH, I have been snaffling away some of the housekeeping money every week and building up a little nest egg. We had just short of £400.00 to do whatever the hell we liked with it. His face was priceless when I counted the readies in front of him. Needles to say we hit that duty free and Jo Malone head on. We all smell lovely now. Well on top of the sweat anyway. Goodness it's hot! I'd forgotten how stifling August is after the pleasant clement weather of April.

Bob and Jayne were at the Pirate just as we arrived and we managed to catch up with all the gossip until just past 2am when we flagged and had to drag our weary bodies up the millions (or so it seemed) of stairs here at the Pirat hotel.
Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, we are not able to stay above Shirl and Bob as planned so we are having a few days at the Pirat then moving on to our friends beautiful apartment on the Kalamar road. So best of both worlds and a holiday within a holiday but no cafetière of coffee on our doorstep this morning sadly.

The wifi here is very sketchy and hit and miss so I'm trying to blog as much as possible and when possible so just bear with me and I'll carry on tomorrow with today's antics.
P.s it's sooooo good to be back!

Saturday 13/08/16

Yesterday we awoke bright and early considering we were propping up the bar with Bob, Jayne and Reggae the barman until almost 3am!
The bed is typically Turkish in that it's a very hard mattress so my hips were a bit tender but still I awoke refreshed and starving too.

Breakfast here at the Pirat is typically Turkish too. Usual cereals, meats, cheeses, salad, bread olives, preserves etc etc, boiled (and I use the term boiled loosely ) eggs. They don't seem to have the knack of a perfect Chucky here. There are two baskets, one five minute and the other 2 minute according to the waiter but translated, that meant raw or hard boiled we found to our amusement. There was also some lovely menemen so I was very happy.

After breakfast we settled our milk bottle bods onto some sun beds and awaited Bob and Jayne. We spent a lovely day with them around the pool and the pool bar and enjoyed a fab Funtime Friday with lots of fun in the sun!
I think we laughed all afternoon, especially when we got on to the subject of a yard of ale. Apparently OH and Shirl are experts at this trick and OH was telling us that he was quite young at the time and had a "bird with a tache" , turns out upon further questioning, he had a Perm and a tache but I don't know which statement was the funnier!!! My smile faded though when he said "no not a bird with a tache - I hadn't met you yet"! Ha bloody ha!!

After a refreshing siesta we met up again at the marina restaurant for dinner. Joining us were of course Bob and Jayne and our fethiye friends who (guess what) are staying in kalkan for a couple of days again, along with another family of our friends and neighbours from home, so 14 of us in total. The restaurant was actually really busy which was good to see and as usual the food was delicious. We had a variety of dishes. Ali nazir kebab for me, mainly steaks for the adults and pasta for the children. Such good value for money with the meal deal and the free lavas puffy bread, tapenade, chilli butter and crumbled cheese. Too full for deserts, we made our way up to black and gold, stopping along the way for kisses, cuddles and handshakes with the greeters we hadn't seen for a few months and somehow always recognise us.
We were greeted with open arms at black and gold too. Such a lovely feeling of returning to the home where our hearts lie.
Rabiya winked at OH and said " welcome back Mr Franco". A reference to us telling them about our favourite shot in April. Burak told us that since we asked him to make us one he has now added it to the menu and it was becoming popular and he even teaches customers how to make them in the cocktail classes he is running. I swear OH's chest puffed out at this news. He was chuffed to bits.
Burak said that I'd inspired him to create a new cocktail with the Franco flavours, called  ' the good the bad and the ugly ' and that he was making me one. The rest of our group ordered theirs, mohito's, gin fizz's, porn star martinis and ps I love you,s. The girls ordering non alcoholic versions and suddenly over the music system blared the theme tune to the film the good the bad and the ugly. The waiter told me my cocktail was served and in a manner of pomp and circumstance my cocktail was indeed served, in a cowboy hat and with a cigar on the side. I had of course to drink the cocktail while wearing the stetson - I gave the ceegar a miss though. Oh we did have fun with that hat. Just a shame that Bob and Jayne weren't there too. They had retired early as they were shattered.

We merrily wended our way home and propped the bar up with reggae until the wee small hours again. Hmm I see a pattern emerging!!!

Today we awoke to grey hazy skies but the sun soon burnt through. Yay, another day of fun in the sun to be enjoyed.

To be continued...

So, yesterday dawned all grey, miserable and muggy with a mist rolling from the mountains behind but soon the sun burned through and normal service was resumed. Our energy was boosted by brekkie, only one rejected chucky egg so not bad going and off we set on our trek up to the yelken to see our friends Bill and Ros whose lovely apartment we will be staying in again from tomorrow onwards. Well I say trekked, we actually taxied up but we trekked back down so at least we are helping to burn off a few unwanted calories.

We spent a little while catching up and arranging handover etc and chatting over coffee, then set off on our hike. We decided to walk down as far as bread and more, then we headed in the direction of the asfiya Seaview and took the steps down to the right hand side which bring you out nicely at the top of the Likya boardwalk. Continuing the descent right down to the harbour and past Indigo and the marina, back to our digs at the Pirat.
Sounds easy? Well we thought so back in April but believe me in this August muggy heat and only armed with a can of gentle to skin cooling mist spray (B&M bargains 2 for a quid) which was not cooling, as it had heated up to boiling point as I found to my dismay - it was blooming hard graft! So we were so grateful for the little oasis in the olive trees that is the beautiful Likya pavillion. We fell in there panting with our tongues hanging out like  dehydrated dogs. Oh it was lovely and even better it was happy hour too!
We had an efes malt each for the sum total of 15 lira . It's really beautiful with a swimming pool separating the lounge from the restaurants and loveky toilets. We will definitely  be back.

We finally arrived back at the Pirat to find Bob and Jane waiting for us. We spent the afternoon round the pool and had a fab lunch sent over from the marina restaurant. Again, more fun in the sun to be had and before we knew it was time to get ready for the night ahead.

We met up again at the olive garden. Wow what a lovely restaurant.  I can only echo what has already been said on here. Definitely a must do. The food and the price is fantastic and it was very busy too.

We ended the night on the thrones at yakamoz listening to my mate Aklan strumming his guitar and watching Shirl bite into a pretzel and hold it up to her eye like a monocle so she could zoom into him. Happy days....

Loving your reports, Lizilu - how I wish we were there right now! Well done with the walking - makes you feel like you've earned your cocktails :)
Nice to see Olive Garden getting some well-deserved business - this place hasn't changed in all the years we've been coming - don't think the menu's changed either but it offers fabulous food and great views.
Don't let Reggae lead you astray.....

Tuesday 16/08/16

So a couple of days to catch up on. It's  been a bit of a whirlwind so far and I hope it's going to slow right down now!

Sunday -

Usual breakfast, although there was a dodgy looking fried bread, possibly French toasty thing as a main feature. I gave it a wide berth as it reminded me of a picture of a deep fried Mars bar and made me feel a bit queasy looking at it.
We had a pool day around the Pirat with Bob and Jane and kept Reggae company, well the boys did while us girls soaked up the sun. It's very quiet at the moment, over a hundred rooms and only 30 or so occupied. Great for finding a sun lounger but not to so good for business.
Around 5ish we decided to take advantage of being in town and trotted over to fener where we indulged in a bottle or 2 of wine and watched the boats lazily chugging their way back home, most not looking too full, however the popular ones eg yildiz looked full to capacity.
A Turkish lady with a cute and squidgy looking baby called Dennis  (probably Deniz)  started chatting to us. He was delightful. Looked like someone had tied elastic bands round his wrists and ankles and had a mop of curly black hair, just like Dennis the menace. So we both took a shine to this cherub however me and Shirl had necked a bottle of wine by this stage so when mum offered us a cuddle I was unsure if maybe it was a wise choice as if my arms acted like my legs usually do and decide to turn to marshmallow maybe not a wise move, so I muttered a very sincere "cok guzel" because he was, however brave Shirl grabbed Dennis with glee and Dennis became a slippery eel between her fingers, we were bricking it but mum seemed happy. Needless to say we were all relived when cherubic Dennis let out a wail worthy of a banshee and Jayne hurriedly passed him back to the safe arms of mum.  ;D

Bob and Jayne were dining in so we went to kaya to see the boys for our evening meal and lovely it was too. Both food and ambience fab. One of kaddir's nephews is learning a few card tricks and practised on us. Not quite up to kaddir's standard yet but he's getting there. Poor lad was very nervous but we gave him lots of smiles and made encouraging noises when he got it right.

Back to the Pirat and an early night we thought. Hmm famous last words, suffice to say that we helped a 19 yr old celebrate his birthday with balloons fireworks, cake, champagne and a pool party all laid out  free of charge by Reggae and staff. Our 15yr old slinking back to her pit witn a look of disgust while mum and dad partied until the wee small hours! I'd forgotten how exhausting a hotel can be! Even better OH and birthday boy's dad were wearing matching shirts, looking like 2 bookends as they sat side by side!

Yesterday was moving day, thank the Lord as I don't think my ageing bones can cope with this partaay scene much longer!!!

To be continued....

Thursday 18/08/16

OH my word, where are these days going!

Monday

Monday was moving day so we sadly said good bye to the Pirat. We loved it there.  Fab position, reasonable price and a very sociable atmosphere, however the room was a bit of a squash for 3 people and the bathroom was so bijou that you had to enter and either walk to the side of the toilet or step in the shower to shut the door. Literally not able to swing a cat in there, no window and no extractor fan so we didn't tend to stay in the room much as at times it got a bit funky in there and I'm not talking about OH's play list here.  :-\
We enlisted the help of 2 young lads sent from reception to carry our bags. Poor things were bent double as they heaved them onto their backs and traversed the millions of steps down to the reception and they were making lots of grunting noises. I felt really bad for packing the 2 litres of bacardi,  1 litre JD, 1 litre gin and 2 bottles of prosecco in there. Not thinking about the weight at the time of packing. I hope they've recovered. I also hope the poor bloke who OH inadvertently sugared his coffee has too. At breakfast I took great delight in watching OH get his morning  coffee. As he placed it down to turn for the sugar,  a random chap put his next to OH as he went for the milk. OH Turned  back and popped the sugar cubes in this blokes coffee and the look on the blokes face was priceless as was OH'S when he clocked his mistake. With mutterings of "sorry mate" he sheepishly skulked back to our table.   ;D
Before we knew it, we were flying off down the kalmar road and onto our new home for the next week.
We settled in nicely and a massive thank you to RosiB and Yelkenite who left us with a fridge packed with enough food and drink to last us for the duration. We are very appreciative. Especially our daughter who was in that batcave quicker than a blink of an eye. So relieved to have her own room again.
It was sad waving them off bittersweet really as we then had the excitement of knowing that our holiday was well and truly underway and we could stop living out of suitcases and properly unpack.
That evening we were meeting up with Bob and Jayne and other friends at the the Likya pavillion, for happy hour. Big Mistake!  I thought it meant 1 glass of wine and I free glass. No it meant 1 bottle was half price so it just had to be done. A bottle each and no food since lunch. It was a recipe for disaster and by the time we headed off in the direction of town, Shirl and I were definitely much the worse for wear. We clung onto each other as we lurched this way and that down the track by Indigo and probably looked as though we were competing in a 3 legged race, staggering and singing "hunker hunker stick it up your jumper" as that was where we were headed. Well we ate our hunker and I think know it was as good as ever but it's a bit hazy really.
I do remember Jayne saying she didn't want a drink to the waiter. "No no no, she stressed, nothing, zero, I've had enough" and the waiter came back with a can of coke zero for her.  ;D so funny.

Tuesday

Tuesday we breakfasted at the yelken for a treat and to soak up the previous nights overindulgence.
It was delicious but pricey. Worth it though and ever so handy for us.
We spent a lovely day round the pool and contemplated  where to eat that night. We decided idea on wapiano due to the good reviews and also as we had been chatting to Guven previously and promised him we would try there.
Oh it was amazing. We previously loved it as agora too. Delicious food at reasonable prices in a lovely location. What's not to like? A meal for 3 of us with wine (only a glass or 2 - giving my liver a rest  ::) ) beer, soft drinks and a grand total of 165 lira! Wow. We are definitely returning there.
We ended the night at kaya, OH dumping me there while he and daughter trekked up to the pharmacy.  A recurring ear infection being the culprit, poor man. Anyway he got sorted out and we had fun time propping the bar up and catching up with the guys, playing and losing at connect 4.
Noticeably absent was the young and petite waiter who kaddir told us was now working in the bakery for a bit of life experience,  gone to see the world, then come back home! Hee hee  we did laugh. Not as much as last year though when I said to him, wow you've grown and he said, so I should, I'm 23 now! Oh I love it in kaya, such a brilliant atmosphere and we have made such wonderful friends there. Our daughter hates boat trips and we were off to kekova the following day. No problem, they said. She can stay here all day and we will look after her. So kind, but she politely declined as the thought she might have to do a bit of work in the kitchen for her keep!

Yesterday was kekova day and i will report back later as the pool is looking, inviting and my Walter is beckoning me with come hither eyes!

To be continued...

Friday 19/08/16

Bit of a sore head this morning as my rheumy eyes struggle to focus on mouse and snake. It's all Shirl's fault of course.  ;) but more of that later.  ;D

Wednesday

Wednesday was kekova day and what a fabulous day we had and a massive thanks to kalkan gems for booking it for us. We set off on the minibus and drove to kekova, stopping off at a viewing point high over Kas for a quick photo shoot of the majestic scenery. It was a very clear morning and Meis stood proud, you could almost make out the pastel shades of the buildings it was so clear.
We continued on, up and down the winding roads until we arrived on the car park. Straight onto the boat and away we sailed. It was a different experience and dare I say, better than last time. The last time we were here we sailed from Kas and although I loved it,  our daughter didn't as she still suffers from motion sickness and it was very choppy at times. This was far more relaxing  and lots of time for swim stops. The colour of the sea is so beautiful here, azure and turquoise mingling together and very warm too. We were all told to come to the front of the boat as the captain was nosing into a cave for us. Just as we were entering, Shirl stood up amid shouts of mind your head!!! Phew, a close shave there!  :o
We soon landed at Simena and set off for ice cream. Of course we had every intention of climbing up to the castle but of course we were far too lazy and stumbled into a little roof terrace cafe which had a lovely view of the harbour so we stayed there. Our daughter desperate for the loo was horrified when the owner showed her to a traditional hole in the ground, so she crossed her legs until we got back on the  boat!  :o
We should have had another swimming stop but it was too choppy, so the captain told us we could swim around for the boat but there was some dubious looking objects floating around so we gave it a miss but Shirl and Bob braved it with their mouths closed.  :)
All too soon it came to an end and we were chugging back home down the D400 coastal road again. Such fantastic views. Kaputas was incredibly busy and the bus struggled to get through a as there were that many cars narrowing the already tight bend.
It was a fantastic day via volume travel. The boat although full to capacity was roomy and lots of seats and beds available and the BBQ lunch was delicious and plentiful. We also enjoyed gozleme for breakfast and you could whizz round the sea on an inflatable armchair dragged by a motor boat if you desired.  :)

We dined at the brothers that evening, too tired to venture very far and it was delicious. Small portions but food to die for. I had the cokerterme with a mixed salad and it was perfect. If you haven't tried it, you must go and we'll with a trip up the kalamar road. We noticed that cafe vita was full kf customers as it was their popular BBQ buffet night. A quick champagne cocktail at aqua and it was bedtime. Perfect end to a perfect day.

Thursday

Yesterday we spent the day around the pool for more AB Fab fun in the sun with Shirl and Bob and enjoyed a lovely lunch courtesy of RosiB and the delicious and plentiful food they left for us. For the first time ever we had cream with our succulent peaches and the taste was amazing. The plums and peaches/nectarines covered in cream were so beautifully ripe, they oozed through our greedy fingers and were a taste sensation. We also had some figs that Bob and Jayne brought round and they went so well with the cheese, sharp goats cheese and hard cheddar types. Various cold meats, warm spicy doner meat and bread with mezze dips were also gratefully consumed. A veritable feast was had by all.

Last evening as you've heard from haybo was a fab get together and we had lots of fun. How the waiter laughed when OH made the comment about the battery acid and Jayne and I not being able to tell the difference. He's a bad 'un. Me and Shirl are coinnesuers but by the second bottle of wine "on the house"  so how could we refuse,   I was flagging somewhat  and with the stealth of a pick pocket as I noticed Shirl's glass emptying I filled it with mine. Sorry Shirl but it seemed like a good idea at the time. We took lots of photos of us in not so flattering poses of which I'm not too proud of this morning but a very happy memory of a brilliant night.

Beach today so I'd better get a shimmy on. 8)

That made me laugh about the traditional toilet...I really struggle with those too, so Batgirl is not alone. Great that you've all been able to meet up for dinner - sounds like you had a great evening.
Looking forward to more posts...or rather I insist on more posts.

Sunday 21/08/16

Well its a lazy and hazy Sunday today for us. It was very humid last night and same this morning. There feels to be a dampness in the air and the sun is obscured by lazy clouds. Also a power cut going on, hopefully this won't last too much longer. We've had a bit of a stressful time from home over the past few days. Both eldest daughters off to uni and places thankfully confirmed and accommodation sorted but I felt so bad not being able to help them much other than assist with checking emails and lots of facetiming while they were on the computer. Miracles of modern science, all sorted now thanks to technology.

So as Jayne has already mentioned, it was fun time Friday at the beach with them. The sea is as bracing as ever. Freezing cold near the surface and warmer underneath. Very difficult to find a warm patch so a quick dip every now and then when the heat of the sun became overpowering. We had a lovely lunch in kleo, very handy being just up the steps too. According to Durali  there is still work to be done, permanent canopies to be erected and travertine floors to be installed.

We also saw the sweetcorn guy on the beach but didn't indulge as we had already eaten. Nice touch from the beach cafe doing waiter service ice cold drinks and snacks too.
I had an unfortunate experience with a sunbed - unbeknown to me there was a bit of a crack in it and as I heaved my body down, there was an almighty cracking noise and suddenly my posterior was grazed with the beach pebbles. Note to self - strict diet starts officially the minute that plane touches down in Manchester.   ::)
We also witnessed a street dog cheekily cock its leg up over a towel bedecked sun bed  :o but we never saw the owner to tell them unfortunately. Just selfishly glad it wasn't ours, it was a bit funny too so we did have a bit of a guilty giggle.

Again Shirl has also mentioned we dined together at wapianos and no need for me to elaborate.  It was very, very good and lovely to watch the sun go down with a cold glass of wine while tucking into delicious food with Ab fab company.  :D

Yesterday saw us embark on a day in the life on an ocean wave with captain Mike on smile boat. A private charter for the 5 of us and it was utterly AB FAB from beginning to end. A smaller boat that I think only does private charters. He was delightful and so was his shy but pleasant petty officer Dimple. At least that what he told us her name translated to in  English as he demonstrated whilst poking his finger in my cheek  ;D
My word, me and Shirl were in heaven, bobbing along on our noodles (apparently known as woggles dahn sahf) on the beautiful briny sea. Our only exertion was burning the wine calories off while swimming around the boat at every stop thus enabling  us to have another glass! Sun, sea, wine, food feast, wine, swim, wine, snooze , wine...you get the picture. OH rocking the boat with his snores, so liberating when you're with friends.  ;) even our sea sick daughter did well. Only heaving once when it got a bit choppy.
We did the usual trip but stopped at mouse island to see the goats rather than refreshing frenk bay but I was happy with this as the sea was beautiful and calm and warm there.
At lunchtime we moored up alongside what we think must have been a boat for "special people" not sure what nationality they were but they weren't your usual sailors. I felt a bit sorry for the captain as although very amusing to us, I can imagine it was a nightmare for him trying to control them. They were mostly middle aged but acting like unruly schoolkids on a school trip. They were trying to climb up the anchor, then running along the gangplank and shimmying under the safety ropes, diving off and jumping off, fully clothed. Poor captain was running from one end of the boat to the other in a wasted effort to control them. It was also very amusing watching them take photos from the top deck. A portly man sucking in his tummy and puffing out his chest in various poses, sniffing under his arms then applying fresh deodarant, fab for people watching. Shirl also gatecrashed another boat party at the mud bath and got coated up nicely by someone from their gang.  ;D
On one of the stops we got a bit close to another boat and the other r boat had to change position so started the engine and chugged off a little. A poor bloke from that boat who was having a leisurely swim obviously saw his boat chugging away with his family aboard, wife and child hanging onto the steps, and he set off like an Olympic gold medalist, his arms cutting through the water like a warm knife through butter.  Thankfully all was fine.

So after a fantastic day we ended up in fener for a light snack of an evening meal and crashed out on the thrones at Jimmy's while listening to the gravelly tones of Aklan strumming his guitar. I'll let Shirl fill you in on that bit as we were party poopers and left like cinderella upon the stroke of midnight, shattered from our weirdly exhausting yet relaxing day on the high seas. I have whatsapp evidence however that Shirl was swigging cocktails until the wee small hours so I'm looking forward to reading about that.

Well daughter is still in the cave, OH is back from the cashpoint and the powers back on as the pool has just bubbled into life so I'd better get this posted while the goings good. The sun has got its hat on too so I'm off out to play.  8)

Oh dear.....plenty of time to think about that when you're home!  I am currently on strict diet in order to lose weight before Kalkan in 7 weeks time, obviously so I can put it back on once I get there!!
We once stayed at a pub in the Lake District (not at all relevant but I want to set the scene) one evening one of the owners large dobermans relieved itself on one of the seats.....we just didn't know what to say when someone came in and sat there......so obviously said nothing!!  ;D

Yet another excellent report Lizilu20...........I can understand why you couldn't suppress a smile with the manic behaviour on the other boat........the Captain will probably think twice before taking on this group in the future😊😊

Monday 22 ;D/08/16

Well we are entering into our last week now so I'm determined to savour every minute. Poor OH has had a really nasty virus, starting with an ear infection,  a mouth full of ulcers and an upper respiratory infection. I had a bad back when we arrived and now I have a chin full of spots. The pair of us have put on weight and our clothes are straining at the seams. He also has a few nasty Mossie bites and I have none. What a handsome couple we make   ;D   Maybe they are savouring his infection addled blood, a delicacy in mossie world? He sprays every night with DEET and I don't. Sometimes I think that you work so hard in preparation for a holiday you run yourself into the ground and I think this is what's happened to him.  He's almost back on form now and as i write, he is rustling me up a breakfast fit for a king. The eggs are on and I can smell the toast burning  ::) then i hear the sound of the toast going in the bin.  ;D the galloping gourmet is now bringing the jams and preserves out  goody! It's no wonder the weight is piling on is it really.  :o

Yesterday we had a really lazy day. We lounged by the pool, only breaking to shuffle down the steps to the yelken bistro, for a delicious lunch. The quality of food is amazing and of an evening it's usually full of diners. We continued  the theme after lunch and flopped back on to our loungers for a siesta in the shade. Bliss.

Last night we firstly got our daughters hair braided at the salon down the hill from fotos pizza as we've been promising her this for a while. We enjoyed a swift aperitif in moonlight as the sun fell from the sky and dined at moussaka.  As delicious as ever and quite full too. Mehmet was saying that his regular customers are keeping them busy but not much new trade, so if you're reading this as a newbie and fancy a treat, you won't be disappointed. This probably is the same for most of the restaurants unfortunately this season.

We finished off our night with cocktails at black and gold. Very reasonable with the VIP discount and something a little different.

Arriving home I  crashed out on the bed, trying and not succeeding very well to peel my clothes off which were stuck to me in the cloying muggy heat. It's so tiring this holiday lark.

And so breakfast awaits as I finish today's installment. This is the life!  :) :) 8)

aah Lizilu, don't think of it as your last week, think about it as your apertiv for next year... :-*

Just catching up with the blogs, sounds like you are having a great time and why wouldn't you be? So sorry Automan's been under the weather, pretty awful to be unwell on holiday. I would have zero sympathy if I was there though...I'd be the first one telling BH to "Man Up" and frequently do.
I'd love to know the secret of the mosquito bites..why some people remain completely untouched and other look like a pox has descended upon them (as Shakespeare might say..)
Enjoy the rest of the week...its a tough job but someone's got to do it!

Thanks for all your comments everyone. Much appreciated  :-*

So, after stuffing my face at breakfast yesterday we decided to have a change of scenery and headed towards the harbour and on to Indigo beach club. First time there and we loved it. It was very quiet when we got there and we had virtually the pick of the front row sun beds. The staff were very helpful and gave us a guided tour. 10 lira for a sunbed and pay at the end, waiter service and tea and cake approx 4pm.

We really loved it here. The view was amazing and the sun loungers were really comfy with big deep cushions. There were also massive pillows to flop on for the best of both worlds. I had it sussed - sun bed in the shade and pillow in the sun.  Perfect, and the best bit of all, no thin slippery ladders, proper steps to descend all ladylike  into the deep blue sea. It was also fun watching the watersports next door but it did make the sea a bit choppy for swimming in. Lunch was delicious and very filling. I had a beautiful tuna nicoise salad with deli style anchovies in a little bowl at the side. OH and batgirl enjoying huge chicken sandwiches and chips.
The only downside was the bill at the end of the day. I think I was treating it a bit like all inclusive and ordering G&T's like they were going out of fashion.  ::) I think the total bill came to something like 270 lira so maybe next time I'll just drink water in stead of being a lush. Fab day though.
We ended our day at aubergine enjoying happy hour and watching a gorgeous little toddler pushing a plastic box around as though it was a walking push along and then 'oliver reed' (sorry don't know his name but I mean the lovely kind man from the supermarket across) gave him the  hosepipe he was using to wash the street down and the fun certainly started then. That hosepipe was like a snake being charmed from it basket! We quickly downed our drinks and made a narrow escape before being drenched.  ;D

We decided to eat at hunkar last night after our daytime over indulgence but it was so busy that we carried on up,to Ata. It was very good and amazingly cheap. It worked out about £25.00 with drinks included,  but I think I preferred hunkar to be honest. Maybe because I'm just used it there. It was lovely to meet haybo and family too.
And then it was time for some Ab fab fun with Shirl and Bob at Marleys and this deserves a post of its own, so I'm going to leave you in suspense until later, with a little spoiler - picture the scene, me Shirl and a motorbike....
 :o ::)

The young lad that looks like jesus in Marleys used to hose his motorbike down outside Marleys every evening about 5 ish..he used to just be in his swimmers and the old Turkish ladies over the road at hunker used to do a nudge nudge to each other just like Les Dawsons two old ladies...you haven't broken his bike have you like the sunbed ?:o

Sounds like another fab day and must try the Indigo. The list is now very long but we will fit it in somehow. Meanwhile we have been arranging transport from Isle of Wight to Gatwick - taxi looks cheaper than train so that's good with Southern trains doing it's usual high quality thing.

Thursday 25/08/16

Sorry I haven't posted for a couple of days but it's been all go here.  8)
BL that story made me imagine a diet coke moment for those Turkish ladies, how funny.  ;D

So Monday night at Marleys, what a hoot. I was tired and dragged myself up those steps, but I soon perked up as Shirl was in partaay mode and she was simply infectious! I'm afraid I caught her bug too which can be dangerous as you already know.  ;D I caught her out of the corner of my eye, throwing shapes with her arms and from past experience, when she does this, she means business! OH thought she was demonstrating virtual knitting but I knew what the script was here. Arms moving, feet a tapping, beady eyes focused on the motorbike which was teasing her and just begging to be a prop on one of our AB fab moments and before I could blink, she got me in a half Nelson and dragged me up on the dance floor. "Shirl,  there's no dance floor" I protested. "Yes there is, I can see it", she  insisted, she turned looked at me straight between the eyes, "it's next to the motorbike" she said mischievously, and the rest is history. After a few token gestures throwing ourselves about in a drunken attempt at strictly ballroom, we were mounted on that bike and Jayne was riding it as though our lives depended upon it (I rode pillion). Oh what a laugh, I nearly cried/wet myself! We also met a lovely group of ladies who joined in the fun and dancing and we had a fab night,

Tuesday as Jayne has already mentioned we threw ourselves into the warm bath that is the sea right now at patara and visited the magnificent dunes, knowing exactly where to go now after all those years of not being being able to find them.
Then onto the kulube where I got chatting to sibel from simply chic. So funny, she took a photo of her hand adorned with lovely bracelets and posted on social media. In between her fingers are Bob and OH, go check it out! What a lovely hotel the kulube is but the pool is a seawater pool and very salty. Fab to swim in though.
We had a takeaway that night and stayed in, I needed to catch up with the washing and ended up in bed by 10ish, needing to be refreshed for our trip with captain abdi on pina x in the morning.

Yesterday was a fantastic day but I'm paying get the price today.  Burnt to a crisp, at least my high forehead is grrrr  :( 8)
I can highly recommend pina x, beautiful boat and amazing food. We were also on with a lovely crowd of people which included aTurkish family who took to me and we had lovely chats with the help of their 12 year old daughter who spoke fantastic English. Over lunch we learned the words for every dish on the table and it was groaning with delicious food. A very funny moment when we were were chatting to some ladies when we were explaining why our daughter wasn't with us as she has terrible motion sickness, she decided to stay in the cave and catch up with important stuff like big brother and pretty little liars???  ???
So the conversation went something like,  she has severe motion sickness so thought it best to stay at home. Ladies, " how old is she" me "15" ladies "ahh" and gave each other and odd look. Turns out later, they told us they thought I had said morning sickness!! No wonder they looked a bit odd at me. OH nearly choked on his efes!
Far too soon  the day had ended, Bob caught 3 huge mackerel, unfortunately one got away, and we made our weary way back up,the hill.

Last night we dined at the marina which was as delicious as ever and dragged ourselves around a few shops before calling it a night.

Today is another road trip with Bob and Jayne so I'd better go and get  myself in gear.  ::)  :P  ;)

Fab reports sitting here giggling at your exploits when I should be sorting through the mountain of KALKAN wear covering the bed and bedroom floor have the enviable task of deciding what to take. Usually pack and unpack a minimum of three times, ever decisive. Well have until next Wednesday night. Back to your fun in the sun, must say you and Shirl make me and my OH look like lightweights and that's saying something, thought we were the middle aged behaving badly, looks like we'll have to up our game to keep up with your antics. Well keep up the hilarious exploits, looking forward to another chuckle and a good excuse to put off the dreaded sorting. By the way where is wapiano, sounds good value just the ticket.

Friday 26/08/16

A lazy pool day today methinks after our on the go whistle stop tour yesterday.

As Shirl has mentioned we started off at the market where we stocked up on spices, ugg slippers, olive oil body cream, yelken lemon spray and the obligatory DVD's. We also bought some wonderfully tasting cheese and red pepper paste. It was a very sweaty stroll as usual in the summer heat but not very busy so at least we weren't packed in like sardines.

Quickly dumped our purchases back at base, checked on our cave dweller and we were off, on our way to Kas via the mountain route we discovered by accident last year. OH driving and Bob navigating, us girls were redundant so we giggled and gossiped all the way which took our minds off the sheer drops at the side of us. Up we climbed until we were on a level with the paragliders and suddenly there it was, that breathtaking views of Kas,  Meis and the islands. Wow! We stopped for some pics and then down the winding mountain pass and on into Kas.  We struggled to park but managed to find a very good spot just behind the square and our bellies were telling us that it was time for lunch. We all fancied pide, and so good they were too, accompanied by a greek salad with walnuts and washed down with efes and soft drinks for Jayne and OH.

Next stop was a tour around the peninsular as Bob and Jayne had never been there before, and a quick stop off at the beach. One side is the lagoon and as still and calm as a pond and the other is the open sea with a refreshing breeze, the road separating the two. Just a quick paddle and then back home via the coastal road to kalkan. No stop at kaputas as it was heaving.
Quick stop at home to collect our daughter and on to our final stop at the kalamar hotel for a lounge and a swim in their beautiful infinity  pool to watch the sun setting over kalamar bay.

We checked with reception if it was OK to use the facilities as we have previously and yes, it was fine. We assured them we would buy drinks etc.
Oh it was lovely, we had frozen melon shots and ice cold flannels to cool us down, on the house and that beautiful pool. There was relaxing music on the sound system and we were in paradise.
Until it was time to go home.
OH paid for my wine as when he ordered it earlier they weren't sure of the price, and then came the sting. They wouldn't let us leave without paying 15 lira each for use of the sun loungers. Bear in mind this was not mentioned at reception, we were ripping. Not really at the amount, although it's considerably more than say, Indigo beach club, but that we weren't informed of this at reception then we could have made a choice whether to stay. Apparently it's a new charge this summer but I'm sure it's going to put people off. The hotel was very quiet and we were spending good money at the bar. We were even talking of returning today for lunch but OH has bow refused to step foot in there again. He and Bob requested to speak to the manager but no manager available. No signs about the charge and nothing on the website.
We were very disappointed and when  we got home, OH put a very fair review on the Facebook page, the only criticism being the charge - it was immediately removed!!!!
So if any of you fancy spending a really lovely afternoon there just check first if the charge is still in force as you'll need to budget this into your day. :(

So a bit dejected we showered and set of for dinner. Where to tonight? We had no plans, so after drowning our sorrows in moonlight we ended up at gourmet. Just the job and cheered us up no end. I had my usual who let the chickens out and it was as delicious as ever. OH had a very spicy but delicious chilli chicken dish and our daughter (who hasn't featured much in these reports due to stasis in the batcave) had fajitas followed by the amazing and gooey chocolate avalanche. No red wine thrown over me as happened last year,  thank goodness,  and we made our way home, feeling a lot better than we did at the start of the evening.

Today is a new day and a very hot one too. Sky is a bit hazy but the sun is shining and all is well.
Let funtime Friday commence!  8)

Sunday 28/08/16

Well its our last day today as we fly home tomorrow and back to reality. I'm very much looking forward to seeing our family but not to the devastation that awaits us from our pooch. OH takes him to work with him every day and other than an odd few hours when we go out with put him, he is never on his own. He usually goes to the kennels but stayed at home with our daughter in April which was great, so we decided to do the same again this summer. On.y difference being that she now has a car and a summer job, so he's been left on his own a little more often, but not more than 4 hours at a time. In these times he has been pining and had destroyed his bedding and the kitchen architrave surrounding the door. I feel so guilty.  :( . He used to destroy his bedding at the kennels but he's never scratched at the door surround before or caused any destruction to our home. I've seen photos and it's not pretty so a job for OH when we get back and lots of cuddles for Charlie.

Friday.

A funtime Friday was very much enjoyed with Bob and Jayne and lots of fizzy lizzie fun in the sun. So much so that we really paid the price yesterday morning. No blog as my head was banging and I was feeling very under the weather. We were supposed to meet Bob and Jayne at moonlight but we were still in kleo on metaxa following a fantastic meal at doy doy. As they'd gone home, we thought we'd nip up to the Pirat to see the guys there and guess What?  We ended up crashing another r birthday party and stayed up eating cake and revelling until the early hours.  ::)

Yesterday was a very relaxing day, it had to be, I could hardly move without my body feeling as though I should be going the opposite way. I hate hangovers and no hair of the dog until late on last evening. We enjoyed a fab lunch at the yelken and I walloped a num num burger down with fizzy water which seemed to do the trick and perked me up no end. OH took himself off to town for a haircut, shave and massage, then watched the first half of the Burnley match at the moonlight bar as me and our daughter had some girlie time around the pool. He came back feeling refreshed from his pampering and looking like my silver fox again.

Last night we dined at Baharat and we were amazed to see the lovely Tarsin (sp?),  Kadir's cousin, who used to work at kaya, then the bakery. He jumped out at us and said "surprise" and we nearly choked on our drinks. He said he got fed up of the heat in the bakery so now works in Baharat and seems to be enjoying it. We had a lovely meal and enjoyed watching the waiters adorn customers with crowns and medieval style hats for comedy photos. Sadly we didn't get chance which was a relief for our daughter who is fed up of our antics as we were meeting Bob and Jayne for a date with Aklan at yakamoz. What a treat, 3 Saturdays listening to his gravelly, mellow tones. If you've never listened to him before, you must seek him out while in kalkan.
So, a perfect end to the day.

I've packed the cases bar the toiletries so that we can enjoy our last day of fun in the sun with Bob and Jayne and will fill you in on our last day when I get the chance. I'm panicking a bit as no bags bought yet. I jest you not, I woke up at 6.30am with a feeling of dread, will there be a purchase this year?

To be continued ...

Does this mean that "The Men Who Stare at Goats" (2009) was conceived in Kalkan?

That's the joy of forums - it's like being down the pub / dinner party - the subject just drifts away and then comes back again. ;D

Well, I'm waiting with baited breath...bag or no bag? That is the question!

As always, I have loved reading your reports an enjoying your holiday vicariously...sounds like you had a great time. I've decided you're Patsy and Jayne is Eddi because she was having a fairly temperate holiday until you arrived and quickly changed all that. Plus, if there's a party going, Patsy/Lizilu can sniff it out from any distance. I rest my case ;)

Shame about the Kalamar Hotel...that's the thing about some businesses in Kalkan wanting to recoup their losses by charging those that have remained loyal to the town even more than usual. We very nearly booked to stay there for a few days next year but settled on the Happy Hotel because they were quick to respond to requests and offered a good price. I'm still waiting to hear back from Kalamar Hotel :-\ As long as they run their business along those lines, they will be charging non-residents for sunbeds, sadly.

Thanks for posting, Lizilu...who's up next? Joycie? Skunk? Babs not far behind now...September is a popular month, someone can surely take over the baton..?

Wednesday 31/08/16

Ah well, all things come to an end and so did our wonderful fun in the sun holiday. Thanks so much to you all for showing your appreciation and lovely comments. Back at work for 2 days now and 2 loads of washing down, I can finally find a bit of time to transport me back into holiday mode and deliver our final holiday report. Sorry it's taken me so long. Hope it's worth the wait.  :)

Sunday 28/08/16

As Shirl so eloquently described our last "fun day", I won't go into detail other than we had a marvelous day at the Asfiya. Those sun loungers are just the job and I have to say, they are awarded the gold medal for comfort and soporific qualities. It was a very bittersweet day, wanting to have fun with the gang but also knowing that we weren't to meet up for a while was emotional, also both the boys were poorly. My OH with a raging ear infection, green gunge leaking from it, and Bob with a swollen eye to match Shirl's earlier swollen lip did dampen our spirits a little. OH also had a dodgy tummy too but bar one incident where he just in the nick of time avoided finding another use for the sun cream bag, all was well and we had a really lovely last afternoon together.

Even better was our last evening and naughty Shirl only skimmed over this part so I will elaborate  ;D

Our evening started off at Bob and Jaynes apartment where I kissed my Walter goodbye along with half a bottle of gin and other bits and bobs that our lovely friends are storing for us. Bob and Shirl skipped into the pharmacy and I skipped into simply chic. By the time Bob was sorted out with his drops, I was sorted out with 2 handbags, just as I was about to concede defeat! I'd been trawling the bag shops and either couldn't find anything I really liked or wasn't happy with the price or color and then suddenly there they were. A 'mulberry tessie' tote and a Turkish non designer beautiful blingy gold, silver and bronze tote, just up my street. Shirl was amazed at my speed spending and looked at me in awe  :o
She even lugged my cardboard carrier (despite my protests) all the way to our next venue, the Likya Pavillion, I felt like the Queen of Sheba. What a lovely friend, she was trying to save my knees as they've been really quite painful this holiday.  :-* note the boys didn't offer  ::) where we were greeted with mojito shots on a silver tray held by a waiter at the entrance. Fab! Let the Funtime begin! And it did, well at 19lira for a bottle of wine and buy one get one free bomonti, it would be rude not to join in.  ;)

Thankfully the boys were feeling better and even our daughter was animated for a change (probably thanking the Lord this holiday with her lush like boring parents was coming to an end and soon she could go back to her own beloved bat cave of a back bedroom at home) and we laughed all the way through happy hour(s)  ;D
Hmm making our way back to town was tricky as Shirl and I did the 3 legged race along the rough and rocky road by indigo. Whose idea was it to play knock a door run on the camper van Shirl?  ??? ::) don't come a knockin' when the van is a rockin' especially when your knees are arthritic and you forget you can't even run for a bus anymore. We were told off by the boys and our daughter and hung our heads in shame. But not for long  :D

Our final meal at wapiano (again) was deeelicious! Lovely food at fantastic prices. I had the Antakya lamb and it was melt in the mouth yummy. Whose idea was it to ask for dancing for dessert Shirl?  ???
What a fab night we had. Shirl had the steely glint of determination in her eye again and before I could blink she was up strutting her stuff on the dance floor. Hang on, Deja vu, what dance floor?? No matter, with Shirl in control of the sound system and Emre the waiter as her dancing partner we danced our socks off. Even had a belly dancing lesson from one of the owners Turkish friends who I may add was awesome, we certainly weren't but that night, in our minds we could have given pans people, legs and co and hot gossip a run for their money.  ;D what an Ab Fab finale we had and a fantastic end to our respective holidays. I desperately hope we can repeat it again next year. We definitely enjoyed fun in the sun and met some lovely new friends in the process.

So until next time, that's all folks, apart from to say, please don't be put off coming to Kalkan. There's enough doom and gloom in this world today and Kalkan needs people like us who appreciate the fantastic Turkish hospitality that Kalkan offers year in and year out. Despite hard times, our Turkish friends have gone out of their way yet again to ensure we have had another fantastic holiday, with experiences and memories to warm our souls as we prepare for a chilly autumn, winter and spring ahead...and then we can do it all again  ;D ;D ;D

Well I'm definitely not feeling the love either Jayne, all I can think about is 'this time last week'.  :(

Poor Lucie, she reads my reports on holiday when she's nothing better to do and she went mad at me in April when I christened her 'Batgirl' hence I've tried not use the term too much in my blog this summer, just hoping she's missed it this time, so shhhh. It's a bit like the Scottish Play scenario in our house.  ;D ;D ;D

Lizilu, I have been enjoying your blog as well as Jayne's.   What a pair you are.   I don't think I ever had quite that energy.

Sorry I didn't get to meet you.   You arrived whilst I was still in Kalkan but not really going out.   Maybe another time when I trust I will be more active but probably not quite up to your standard.

You certainly made the most of your time in Kalkan.   Will be looking forward to future blogs so don't forget!
