Title: Prescription medication
Post by: chickengeorge on August 05, 2016, 02:32:13 PM
Maybe some residents can help me with this query. Now resident in Turkey and registered with the local GP. My wife is on long term medication from diagnosis of a medical condition in uk. Went to the Turkish doctor and first visit was fine and the doctor wrote a prescription and we collected from chemist. Second visit we saw another doctor who refused to give a prescription without seeing a report confirming it's needed. Does anyone have any experience of this or information on the correct process?

when I was in Kalkan  a week ago I had no problem buying Proton Pump inhibitors (lansoprazole) over the counter without giving proof that I needed them.  thought that they had only stopped antibiotics without a prescription?
I did try and buy a prescription medicine for a friend of mine in the uk who suffers with cystitis and was refused bur assumed that it probably had an antibiotic in it.  another friend had no problems buying Prozac over the counter !

From my experience certain (long term) medication requires a report from a specialist.I get my report actioned at Esnaf Hospital in Fethiye. This allows me to use my SGK cover too.The report then allows you to obtain the specified medication over a specific period of time and I can then get a prescription written at the health centre rather than returning to the hospital. My medication is blood pressure related and I see the cardiologist. The report may cover a couple of months or years depending on your state of health.

There are certain medications that the local health centre cannot write a prescription for though but they can give advice and the chemists are also very helpful, the one on top of the DIY shop is especially informative and will go the extra mile to help.

It seems a complicated system but from experience it works really well and you do not need to make an appointment locally but can get to see a doctor at the health centre the same day and we also have Dr Nayazi in Kalkan.Appointments in hospitals can be obtained very quickly too.
