Title: Chill bars
Post by: Slats on April 07, 2008, 08:23:50 AM
Bev and I love nothing more in the evening than to relax in a Turkish bar with soft, chilled music with big cushions to sit or lie down on, looking up at the stars. We have a very special one in Icmeler. Is there one in Kalkan? ;)

Thanks

Steve

Try the Ottoman house or Belgins kitchen - they both have ottoman seating albeit inside (bit of Ottoman is probably outside) - otherwise you''ll probably have to sit on chairs and gaze at the lovely stars...!!!

Cheers!

The simple answer to your question is no.

The above mentioned places may well have ottoman cushioned seating but they are all restaurants - granted they will be happy to serve you just drinks, but unless my definition of a ''chill bar'' is wrong, they are not what you are looking for.  Belgin''s Kitchen have live Turkish music (great, but hardly relaxing!), and anyway this is performed inside and away from those stars.  The other places mentioned concentrate more on their food than their choice of music.

So as much as you may very much enjoy any one of them for what they have to offer, I''m afraid you will not find anything akin to your Icmeler haunt.

I disagree a bit with the earlier post about the Ottoman House. I have just returned from Kalkan this week and as in my two previous trips I spent every night sitting on the cushions there enjoying a water pipe and listening to the music. If you don''t like what they are playing at any time they will happily change it for you or take them some along and they will put it onto their computer. It''s not open to the stars but you are outside. The owner (Ayhan) wants the Ottoman House to stay as a relaxed place and so he does not push the restaurant so much. Most people who eat there do so on the terrace at the top but of course it is also very enjoyable to eat traditional style at the low tables. If you go there you will find it a very nice and chilled experience and everyone who works there is great and will take the time to talk with you if that is what you want. It is one of the major reasons that I go back to Kalkan.

Am making it our mission this year to try different places to eat!  :)

Ottoman house directions - at the Moonlight bar - take the first right hand turn down to the harbour (where the car park is on your right hand side).  Just past the car park the road bears round left and you will see Ottoman house set back a bit on the right hand side - easy to find!

Cheers!

Yes, it''s next to Zeki''s - I think it''s being confused with Belgin''s Kitchen which also has Ottoman seating downstairs.

Hi there all

Yes I can confirm that Ottoman House offers the best chillout zone!  My husband and our freind have spent many an evening after a very filling dinner just chilling out with our Bombay gin and tonics just talking and listening to the music...they guys are really freindly there and when we mentioned we really like the music they were playing last year they burned the master onto a cd for us to take home.....Now that is what I call true Turkish customer service.!

We will defintely be returning again when we return end of June!

oh PS - they do serve food but you defintely dont have to eat there

I am firmly with Marks and Jayney about the Ottoman House. It really is a great place to relax and watch the world go by, with a few drinks. The staff are really friendly and in fact last May a couple of them went to the trouble of taking a load of ingredients up to my villa, and preparing a traditional Turkish breakfast for my first guests of the season. This was a gesture that was greatly appreciated and never forgotten by them, as it was a genuine offer of friendly local hospitality. I don''t know anywhere else this would happen, maybe somewhere else in Turkey perhaps, but elsewhere...?

O0 Yes!! Ottoman House is one of the best chill out zones in Kalkan and very definitely, they  do not expect you to eat.  A regular visitor to Kalkan I find I don''t want to eat a massive meal every night.  It''s great to sit at one of the low tables over a few gin and tonics ( I actually love the local stuff) and order a few nibbles - hummous, flat bread, ciger (Turkish style liver) - a sort of Turkish Tapas. Cok guzel!!

Zula cafe/bar has just opened opposite Belma''s Boutique which although very contemporary looking has a nice relaxed atmosphere. there is plenty of seating inside and out and you can have a nice meal, a snack or just a drink. Well worth a visit. I am told they are also opening a restaurant on the roof terrace and extending the cafe/bar to the little garden out the back too but these weren''t open when we were there.
