Post by: pattaya on February 01, 2016, 06:24:52 PM
I wonder if any one can help.. with the recent change in passport requirements 60 days validity on passport from finish of visa .. in order for us to travel on my husbands current passport we would need to buy his visa in march, however we are not traveling until end of April. If we leave it until April that visa wont expire until Oct and his passport runs out 21st Nov so its not enough .. any help appreciated

Agree, there's no loss in renewing his passport early as the days you lose are added on to the new passport, we did this with my husbands passport last year.

Yes but that's the problem we are going  away next week and again mid march .. so don't have time.
if I brought the visa early march it would exp in august so would be ok for the 60 days ..

Not sure if this is any help but we just renewed our daughters passport - did the post office check and send last tuesday and got it back yesterday so a quick turnaround at the moment - is this a world record  ??? :o ;D

Lizilu20::   Agree , we have used the post office system before where they do a pre check ,  done in 5 working days last time around  if I remember rightly,   and about the same time i.e. Jan/Feb   ::    but as you hint  might be time of year , nice and quiet at moment

I hate have to do something on a tight time scale through .. too stressful and my luck I would be the unlucky one.
So do you think I could just purchase the visa earlier ?? this would be the easier option then post passport off in May ready for our next trip in Sept  :)

It's only the beginning of Feb. If you're not travelling until April there is ample time to get a new passport. Particularly if you use the post office service. You can do it in an hour max before you go away next week.

It is worth phoning the passport office in London. I am sure a friend of mine was in the same  state and she went up there and they renewed it there and then. Another friend lost hers and she went up and she had a new one within the week. I think there is an extra charge for it.

The passport ofice is not far from victoria station...or it used to be.

No point in the Post Office check for a renewal - just do it online, print off the form and send it off with the photos and the old passport.

Our latest renewal was: photos taken Fri 22 Jan, on-line done Sat 23 Jan, posted (signed for) Monday 25 Jan, new passport received (from Belfast) Monday 1 February 2016.

Post Office check really only necessary if it's a first or new one.  For renewals, they compare what you've told them with your old picture and what they know.  Easy!

I would suggest renewing as soon as you return from your first trip, as it will be spring, things MAY take a little longer than a week.  Also have your picture done by a Professional, don't use a machine - the human factor will ensure the photo gets done to the required standard, and it may even look like you!

They will only add on 6 months to a passport, but do you really care, providing you can travel?

I had the same problem late last year not enough time left on my passport when my visa expired, so I put in the visa system I was travelling earlier leaving enough time left on my passport 😀😀

As far as I am aware, you only need the appointment for a first time passport, and some other exceptional circumstances.

But then, what do I know of the machinations of the Civil Service?

Lesson: try the on-line first, then resort to dealing with (un)real people.... >:D
