Title: Breastfeeding in Turkey
Post by: Psmudge70 on September 02, 2015, 10:32:46 PM
Does anyone know the Turkish opinion on breastfeeding?

We're coming to Kalkan in a couple of weeks and my wife is feeding our 7 week old baby. Of course she's discreet but just wondering about the Turkish point of view. Don't want to offend but our daughter will still need feeding!

Many thanks

Breastfeeding is Very common in Turkey, much more so than the UK. Besides the health benifits I think your find that it's a 'cost' thing.....soooo much cheaper ( free ) than feeding with man made powder milk & bottle.

Albeit, I have never seen a baby been breastfeed in public though. So I would say being discreet is the name of the game.

Tip  : Our 6 grandkids have been coming to KK since they were babes ( youngest to visit was 3 weeks old ) You don't need to load your suitcase up with baby products as Yali supermarket stocks a great range of baby products.

One thing I would say is to bring your baby's own (car) baby seat for the transfers. My girls tell me the ones they use out there are not that good for very small babies. Better safe than sorry.

We here @ EK would love to hear how you got on in KK with your baby, I'm sure a report on the +'s & -'s ( do's & donts ) would go down well other Mums planning to visit.

I hope you all have a great holiday in sunny KK :-)).

Agree with one love, descretion is the key issue & again I have never seen a Turkish mum breastfeeding even in their own home whilst visiting, alway done in private. Also have to take into account that although life is quite easy here there are still some who are offended/upset or even embarrassed it is their way.
One thing for certain, they are children crazy so you could end up having your daughter 'adopted'

I live here in Kalkan, and I breastfed my twin children in public at Fener quite often, just put a scarf or pashmina to cover baby's head and you and it will be fine.  Other friends also did the same.

I think that's the key... no breast on show.
