Title: Holiday accommodation booking scam
Post by: AgainstGossip on August 29, 2015, 11:24:40 AM
Beware of booking enquiries from someone claiming to be from Sweden. They claims to have paid the booking fee by bank transfer, but when it doesn't arrive in the bank and the owner queries it, they start sending threatening emails to the owner. This person is known to one of the major holiday rental websites but and has been banned. But they may be using many of them. The website company I spoke to says this is a common scam in order to obtain free holiday accommodation:
They claim to have paid for the accommodation which they haven't.
They send the owner a fake bank transfer confirmation in the hope they will just accept it without checking and allow them access.
They are often, but not always, last-minute bookings.
Sometimes they will even have the audacity to claim they have paid, then cancel the 'booking' demanding a refund for a booking they haven't even paid for.
Then if the owner doesn't 'reimburse' them they then embark on a smear campaign against the owner on travel forums and fake negative reviews as they are easy to post but near on impossible to get removed to blackmail the owner into capitulating.

It seems like nobody would fall for such a scam but apparently according to the website company, it's the fear and distress of having fake negative 'reviews' and comments posted about them which pressurises the owners into giving in.

One way to avoid this scam is to only accept payment via PayPal etc rather than by bank transfer. Always a good idea any way.

If you receive a booking enquiry from Sweden and are concerned, message me privately and I will supply you with the name of the scammer.

I would also be very happy to publish details of anyone involved in fraudulent activity. Anyone letting out holiday accommodation needs to be protected from these scammers and they deserve to be exposed for the criminals that they are!!
