Title: New Road Surface...?
Post by: Timm on January 26, 2015, 08:57:28 PM
Hi,

How are the stone setts holding up to wet winter weather? When I was in Kalkan last, one of the restaurant owners said they were only bedded in sand which would wash away in winter rain. I am hoping that is not proving the case...

Regards

Tim

The newly surfaced streets are much safer underfoot and the new drainage gullies seem effective at dealing with heavy rainfall. But in October last year during a storm, torrents of water came flooding down from the mountains, washing away hundreds of the stone sets down to the harbour. Some sections of road also collapsed (outside Adda, on the slope near Doy Doy, and outside the PTT. Most of these areas have now been repaired of sorts and new setts put down to fill in the gaps, but as you would expect it isn't the neatest job and in places there is little sand left between the stones as this has been washed away either by subsequent rainfall, or business owners hosing down the streets. So the new roads lasted the summer but were not really up to the winter weather, which is such a shame as they look ok in places. Whilst the plans were fine and the materials sound, maybe the execution of the project could have been netter.

Some say that the increased episodes of flooding in the town are down to reduction in natural drainage on the hillside as more and more olive groves are destroyed to make way large numbers of new villas resulting from the current building boom. You would think the Town Planning Department would try to manage this.

They appear to be holding up quite well although there are a few places where they have become dislodged. They were bedded down on sand, we stood last year watching them being laid, with the grit type filling-in of which a lot has now either been washed or worn away.

Yes I was there in October - freak weather for that time of year.

So, from what I read, the new surface is a mixed success.

Thanks for the replies.
