I have to ask...do those of you that live in Kalkan miss a UK Christmas? Not the commercialisation or the fighting for the last tub of cream in M&S on Christmas Eve. More the family gatherings, Midnight Mass, the smell of a real tree, a big box of cadbury's biscuits and a giant Turkey with all the trimmings..? We live quite high up and more often than not there's snow on the ground come 25th and it really does feel magical - the frantic run-up is always forgotten. We often think about retiring to Kalkan in the not too distant future but I wonder if I would miss Christmas in the UK..?
Just interested to hear your thoughts...

having spent nearly every Christmas in kalkan for the last 14 years, I would miss Christmas in Kalkan! :)
-
Certainly don't miss the UK Christmas, far too much pressure, it all focuses on family, spending & trying to do the right thing. For those who have no family it must be a very lonely time, hard up families trying to make ends meet, more pressure & those having to travel, the problems re trains & roads etc. Here its quiet, a lot of residents are away in various places, Antalya for example, it's just nice to walk about & bump into people pass on seasons greetings etc, have a quiet drink. By the way we do have turkey & all the trimmings, maybe not all the ones you are used to but, we can get cream & puds are made here together with cakes. Now New Year is a different matter..........

thanks for your views and the PM's - good to know Turkey is available in Turkey ;D ;D ;D
Interesting that you can get cream - its the one thing (other than slimline tonic) that I would really like to buy when we are in Kalkan. Is it just a seasonal thing?
-
Have been buying cream in Kalkan for years now. Also the best turkey we have ever had has been in Turkey :)
-
ok samson, tell me where you buy cream..? The "Creme" that comes in cartons isn't fresh, its a sterilised version which doesn't heat well and the stuff that comes in cans to be squirted out is full of sugar so also no good for cooking, please put me out of my misery and tell me where you buy cream in Kalkan - single or double, I would gladly have either. Its like the best present ever :-*
-
You can get 'kaymak' which is similar to clotted cream in most of the supermarkets.
-
Yes not fresh but I have had no problems making desserts that require the cream to be heated. there are various makes so maybe I was just lucky picking the right one ! Usually buy in Yali
-
p.s Kalkan4Ever. I have a friend who has been making Panna cotta this year for a restaurant. I shall contact her and ask which cream she uses and where she gets it
-
Have to agree about the turkey (hindi) we have had some of the best here, must admit though would love a really good gammon joint
-
I've also had great success using the carton cream, but in savoury dishes - especially my peppercorn chicken in cream and brandy sauce with mushrooms. Served with buttery mash and spinach of course. Turkish friends rave about it. Also some of the suzme yoghurts are wonderfully rich and creamy - a little like creme fraiche - and I imagine would work well in some deserts.

Kalkan4eva: You'd probably hate Christmas in Oz, then.
Barbie on the beach, snow 2000 miles away, smell of burnt trees, Turkeys are bigger - called ostrich (or emu); though you can do the midnight Mass - probably. Dunno about the Kraft/Cadbury's though - Oz can be a bit US-centric: you may have to put up with Hershey's! Cream's not much of a problem, though you may have live cricket instead of Dad's Army on the TV!
Kalkan may be a better alternative >:D
-
You're not really selling Christmas in Oz, Chris_S :P Oh and IMO, Hershey's is the worst chocolate in the world (apologies to all those who love it..)
But I am hot-footing it around to Christina's for that delicious sounding food ;D
-
Squirty cream in the can piled in big dollops on paper plates shoved right in the kisser....thats what waits for any Big fat bloke in a beard and red suit that comes down my chimney!! >:D >:D
-
Kaymak is lovely, use it in my chicken liver pate. In fact if you have the knowhow & good at adapting you can have almost what you want without paying silly over priced prices for imported products.
-
Not sure how this has become yet another topic away from out of season updates as surely Christmas & NY are out of season, getting a bit confused now where to post or not as the case may be.
-
Just for the record, I did not move it. The first post in this thread was in response to you talking about the Christmas tree in Migros, DRBD...in out of season updates.... and now its a whole new topic. I fear cream will go the same way ::)
-
What?? you mean the cream will go off ? :P :-X
-
not the cream in Kalkan...
-
The Cream of Kalkan are found here, surely?
Whether it will go off is another matter!
