Title: Concrete Kalkan?!
Post by: Enjoy Kalkan on March 16, 2008, 01:51:11 PM
Has anyone seen the article in the Sunday Times today about other Turkish hillside resorts ........

http://travel.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/travel/destinations/turkey/article3552315.ece

I think "concrete Kalkan" is a little unfair but maybe a warning sign to slow down the building work while so many are unsold?

Hi Jon - Yes - I did see it - and thought the wording was a little harsh.....but not as bad as what they said about Hisaronu - ..''the concrete ugliness of Hisaronu''.. :P  However, I think they they featured nicely on Bezirgan and Islamar and I''m sure that it will do Owlsland a big favour and ultimately, if people stumble upon Kalkan in the process - they might see that it isn''t quite the concrete jungle that the article implies..!!   ;)

I agree Felicity - I thought the wording was harsh, of all the places to describe as "full english breakfast" places I wouldnt have picked Kalkan!

Would love to know more about the author of the article!

Would love to know more about the author of the article!

He is an author of quite a few books about Turkey: "A fez of the Heart" about travels in Turkey & also (can''t remember title) the history of St Nicholas/Santa Claus.

The trip was paid for by exclusive escapes - wonder how happy they are about that remark about Kalkan?

I agree lots of villa''s have been built over the years, but it sure isn''t like a concrete jungle, to me a concrete jungle is high rise''s where you cant see the lovely views around you, thinking the Costa''s in Spain, if Turkey ever became anything like, I would be the first not to go, I hate concrete jungles, Kalkan is no where near that yet, and please god hope it never will be.

If the author thinks that Kalkan is a ''concrete jungle'' I would be interested to hear his views on Marmaris!

Well, it means more room for the rest of us!
If he wants to see a concrete jungle i can direct him to many, but Kalkan isnt one of them.

Hi
I think what this author has written is not harsh, but incorrect and uninformed. I have never thought of Gocek or Olu Deniz as concrete jungles, let alone Kalkan. Maybe the author has forgotten to travel to many other holiday places around the world, on each continent, or is simply blind?
I also find it strange that he raves about Bezirgan, and then seems to leave it all the time apart from to eat and sleep! I think Bezirgan is fab, and was looking forward to a day at Owlsland at Easter, but unfortunately the owner has a broken leg at the moment!
What is strange is I have just bought this authors book to read in Kalkan...so who knows where this will lead?
Just my view of course...

''Concrete Kalkan'' or the ''Full English Breakfast'' thing all sound somewhat wide of the mark for most of us with a great deal of experience of the place. It may be just a gentle nudge to the developers to slow things down a bit, allow the glut of property that appears to be around at the moment time to be ''soaked up'', but I didn''t see too many signs around, when I was last there in Octobe ''07, most of the people I know looking forward to ''development time'' again irrespective of the markets available to actually turn the construction around.   Seems weird. I guess quite a few people will be getting their fingers burnt over what appears to be a reckless disregard for market forces.  Articles like this one can hardly enhance the flavour of Kalkan to people that aren''t aware of it''s attractions can it? We need another article to rebut this one. Show the other side.  Anybody????

I read the article about an hour ago and thought it was a really cheap insult. Maybe yhere''s a complaints section on the Times online site. I''ll have a look.

Looked at the site and the only thing I can find under comment is the letters page where you can reply on previous articles in the paper. Interestingly if you search for Kalkan there are some other lovely pieces about Kalkan.

Probably Em, what with the 10 hours expected delay on flights to Dalaman due to the sudden and totally unexpected blizzard, thunderstorm and the plague of locusts etc that is currently affecting all the area with it''s epicentre reportedly being in Kalkan. Stocks of Efes are due to run out tonight and Easter visitors are being advised to stay at home.
Glad I am not going.  ;D
