Title: Hot, ready cooked chicken.
Post by: clara 50 on July 02, 2014, 03:05:11 PM
We always bought ready cooked  whole chickens straight off the spit from the chicken man in the old town. Last year he wasn't there so we just bought portions from the supermarket but they just weren't as scrummy. We found it handy for a quick fresh salad and enough to make a second meal, maybe with a wine sauce or a stir-fry. Even knocked up a make-do sunday lunch once when my OH's stomach was feeling homesick. Wondered if anyone has noticed a spit-roast anywhere this year, maybe up Kalamar? Sounds a bit of a daft question but being there for nearly three weeks it gets expensive to eat out every day and sometimes it's just nice to have a meal at the villa and chillout with a few drinks and no need to doll up.

They did hot cooked chickens at the deli opposite side of the road to Yali last year and the year before. Either pick one up at lunchtime or late afternoon. The spit was outside and you could order if you wanted to.

There are  spit roast places, one at the deli almost opposite Lemon Garden & one at the tobacco/wine shop just down the road from Lemon Garden, very useful & tasty.  Not a silly question at all, it really is nice to just chill out & eat where you are staying sometimes.  If you go into the deli they sell bread, cheeses  & lots of other goodies so you could get your supper all in one place.  Enjoy.

Yes I agree, we were amazed at the Deli opposite the Lemon Garden last year, didn't even know it existed, they sell a lovely range of fresh bread and fab feta cheese, lovely with one of the spit roasted fresh chickens. I don't think the chickens were expensive either if I remember rightly. Oh gosh just typing this, is making my mouth water at the thought of all the lovely food to sample in Kalkan, even a take a way food has a fab appeal as well as all the wonderful restaurants of course! 27 days and counting!!!

Yummy chickens but not very big.....They need a Chicknasium to fatten them up!!..we had a few takeaway / deliveries and Hunker do Chicken wings which were nice (medium size is about 12 wings)..but best for food and delivery was Oz Adana, The original Oz Adana which is now on the roundabout at the top of the village by Brave tours etc this won hands down on price ,taste and value for money ;)
happy chompin!

BL we keep hearing about Oz Adana and how good it is, and that is on our list this year too. Didn't think you could get better than Hunkar, but obviously sounds like they are excellent too. :D

The hot chickens at the Deli are 12tl each and we got some lovely fresh cooked veg with it as a freebie. The Deli is great for all sorts of things from village eggs to after 8 mints. Love this place. The chickens were certainly bigger this year and we were able to buy one after 7pm on a couple of days. Didn't try the shop opposite though so can't comment on the size or price.
We were so delighted to see Oz Adana back in town but didn't get round to going. Always been a massive favourite but it was a trek when they moved up to the old Luka premises. Does anyone know if they have a licence to sell alcohol now...?

Thanks guys. The deli sounds just the ticket, especially with all the bits and bobs to go with it. Oh feta, I'm an absolute addict. Not sure we've tried the deli before as usually send my OH out in the jeep on some of the grub runs. The lemon garden  ??? Can't place it, must be my after midnight brain freeze. Well it is ten to three in the morning with back to back gold reruns of mock the week.  Run out of sheep to count, even though I'm a taffy. So please enlighten me, lemon garden? Although by morning I'll probably remember doh. Thanks nite, nite all.

Clara 50 it is Parc Kalkan, I had to think twice too, as was calling it the Lemon Grass! Really worth trying the Deli though, unless you know, you would miss it on walking past.  It's like a Aladin's cave in there!

Hunker are good but to try something a little different go to Cezayir Usta which is opposite Hunker, (Ali Baba rest.), the doner there is beef rather than lamb so makes a nice change.  The deli is called 2M Cadde, as these places are all in the same location you should find one or other without any trouble.

Do try the bakery just down from Yali too, lots of variety of breads, walnut bread is our favourite.

Is this deli near Hunkar? we are staying in a villa up there just past Yali and it sounds ideal!

Where is the bakery...? Completely missed that  :( BH reckoned we went in every single shop in Kalkan - not all of them to his liking so he will be gutted we missed a bakery right where we were staying. Is it the new place under the new fish shop and veg shop? It looked like a cafe so we never went in...

Yes that's the one, the bread is so very good and they also do little pastries both meat and cheese, baklava and gateaux, the specialist breads are a bit more expensive, I think we paid 3 lira for yummy walnut bread we have had sesame bread too which was also very good.  Worth a try.

That's good to know. Do they do the round flat pide type bread? We love that made into a turkish style pizza - pile a load of toppings on eg spicy sausage, onions, garlic, peppers, herbs, cheese, drizzled with oilve oil and into the oven for 10 mins - its fab for lunch. My mouth is watering... :)

Lizilu can't remember seeing plain flat bread there but they probably do it, they sell small ones topped with cheese, peppers etc.
