Title: Re: PRICES for 2014?
Post by: alantj on April 20, 2014, 06:41:30 AM

Results from limited research carried out during our trip out in April

Cheapest    Cafe Ev   3.75 TL (Tuborg)
                                          Foto Piza 3.99 TL (Effes)

                        Dearest      Agora 8TL Effes

It's time to update this thread for 2014. Sadly the days of getting a beer for under 4TL are long gone, prices now range from 7-10TL, examples from our current trip are:

7TL     -   Hunkar and Ali Baba
       7.50 TL -  Fender Cafe
8.50 TL -  Kleo bar and Mussaka
9.50 TL -  Aubergine and Gironda (Tuborg)
10 TL.   -  Limon Cafe (used to be Parc Kalkan)

For wine drinkers the choice of wines has improved and prices seem to have stayed pretty much the same as last year. Majestic is now offered in a lot of restaurants and is pretty good value at 33TL in Kaya. Gironda has Tigris at 35TL. We preferred both to Angora, which used to be our default choice for a dry white.

At 3.50TL to the £ eating out is generally very good value, with prices in £s back to where they were 4 or 5 years ago. E.g. Gironda for 3 people 2 courses each, bottle of wine and a beer 180TL. At the other end of the price scale Hunkar still has Kalkan's best Chicken Shish for 10TL, including a free starter of salad, dips and bread.

Thanks alantj, I've clicked to express that officially
Is it 3.5tl to £ in most exchanges or just the banks? Noticed it was 3.3 in Tesco here in UK yesterday.
Good to see Majestic being sold in the restaurants now, it was definitely my favourite dry white purchase from Lucky supermarket last year. We were expecting a large Efes to be in the region of 10tl this year, but as you say with the good exchange rate it probably means we won't need to add to BH's Efes fund  :)

The exchange rate has improved steadily over the last week, best rate I have seen on display today is at telephone shop opposite Kaya, at 3.55TL to the £.

Effes/Tuborg in the shops is still around 4.75 so now a bit of a bargain for the home drinkers. One thing to watch is the 10:00pm sales ban, it's strictly enforced. Last night we spent a bit longer than we thought in Yali faffing over which wine to buy and got to the till at 10:02, so no nightcap for us.
